Barbara Mcclintock's Socio-Epistemic Discourse And The Canonization Of Transposition In The Genetics' Literature, Christina Ann Dill

Theses Digitization Project

This analysis of scientific writing defines the generic experimental article as socio-epistemic discourse in terms of Charles Bazerman's empirical, social, and literary contraints for scientific activity. Such analysis provides answers to specific questions concerning conflicts between individual rhetorical practices and collaborative knowledge construction in science as claims and new concepts are evaluated.

"Yes, Friends, These Clouds...Are...Stage Machinery": An Exploration Of Subject In John Ashbery, Shauna Sutherland

Honors Papers

John Ashbery emerged in the late 1950's as an avantgarde experimentalist. His critical attention has varied remarkably since that time to the extent that he is now considered by some to be an "utterly academic poet." His early volumes, such as The Tennis Court Oath (1962), often received harsh criticism. This particular volume was simply labeled "garbage" by reviewer John Simon. Of course, Ashbery has always had his evident admirers, such as Harold Bloom, who links Ashbery wholeheartedly with his great American forefathers Emerson, Whitman and Stevens. But even Bloom's most complimentary articles on Ashbery include such statements as the …

Exempt Organizations: A Study Of Their Nature And The Applicability Of The Unrelated Business Income Tax, John M. Strefeler, Leslie T. Miller Jan 1996

Exempt Organizations: A Study Of Their Nature And The Applicability Of The Unrelated Business Income Tax, John M. Strefeler, Leslie T. Miller

Akron Tax Journal

With the hope of clarifying a difficult issue, this paper examines the traditional categories of exempt organizations (EOs), rationales for their exempt status, tests for gaining and maintaining their exempt status, standard tests used to impose unrelated business income tax (UBIT), and ways in which the traditional tests and standards are changing. Furthermore, this paper predicts areas of future change, discusses ways in which EOs can immediately strengthen their exempt status to avoid unnecessary UBIT, and suggests principled arguments which can be used to halt additional unwarranted incursions by tax "reformers" and "simplifiers."

Biofilm Mediated Calculus Formation In The Urinary Tract, Robert J. C. Mclean, David J. Stickler, J. Curtis Nickel Jan 1996

Biofilm Mediated Calculus Formation In The Urinary Tract, Robert J. C. Mclean, David J. Stickler, J. Curtis Nickel

Cells and Materials

Mineralization and subsequent calculus formation is a common complication of biofilm infections. In the urinary tract, these infected calculi often arise from infections by urease-producing bacteria. Ammonia, liberated by bacterial urease activity, increases urine pH, resulting in the precipitation of Ca and Mg as carbonateapatite {Ca10(PO4,CO3)6(OH,CO3)2} and struvite (NH4MgP04·6H2O). These minerals become entrapped in the organic matrix which surrounds the infecting organisms and ultimately grow into mature calculi. When the causative organisms grow on urinary catheters and stents, the resulting mineralization can …

Emery County High-Value Agribusiness Diversification Study, Deevon Bailey, Yasmin Adam, Norris J. Stenquist Jan 1996

Emery County High-Value Agribusiness Diversification Study, Deevon Bailey, Yasmin Adam, Norris J. Stenquist

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This research examined the economic feasibility of various value-added alternatives of major crop and livestock enterprises in Emery County, Utah. The results suggest that building a stockyard facility where feeder cattle could be sorted and pooled for sale would be a net economic benefit to the county. Building a 400-head capacity beefpacking plant would likely not be feasible in Emery County. Ajamljelly plant would likely be profitable ifit were built in Green River and its products sold in Moab as well as in the Green River area.

Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I (Igf-I) And Igf Binding Proteins: Potential Mediators Of The Influence Of Nutrition On Ovarian Function In The Heifer And Gilt, A.M. Benoit, K. Swanchara, P. Schoppee, Jeffrey D. Armstrong Jan 1996

Armstrong

Office of the President Scholarship

Nutrition influences age at puberty, duration of postpartum anestrus, and ovulation rate. Mechanisms mediating these effects, however, have not as yet been fully elucidated. Shifts in feed intake are accompanied by changes in circulating levels of insulin-like growth factor-I (lGF-I), and somatotropin (ST). Feed restriction increases ST, decreases IGF-l, and shifts the proportions of IGF binding proteins (IGFBP). Active immunization against growth hormone releasing factor (GRFi) has been used to examine the effects of alterations in the somatotropic axis, independent of feed intake, on reproduction in prepubertal gilts and heifers. GRFi decreased the number of large follicles present on the …

Pathogenesis Of Bovine Herpesviruses In Vitro, C. C.L. Chase, S. Stone, K. Bialas, C. Carlson, W. Wiese, L. Braun Jan 1996

Pathogenesis Of Bovine Herpesviruses In Vitro, C. C.L. Chase, S. Stone, K. Bialas, C. Carlson, W. Wiese, L. Braun

South Dakota Beef Report, 1996

Bovine herpesviruses cause acute disease in cattle. Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1 or IBR) is a respiratory virus, while bovine herpesvirus 5 (BHV-5) affects the brain and causes a viral encephalitis. Studies in the laboratory showed no difference in the growth rate of BHV-1 or BHV-5 in blood vessel, brain, or kidney cells. The ability of BHV-1 to cause cells to die is not caused by apoptosis (programmed cell death). Further studies on the pathogenesis of bovine herpesviruses need to be conducted to improve control and prevention measures.
