An Experimental And Modeling Study Of Ph And Related Solutes In An Irrigated Anoxic Coastal Sediment, Roberta L. Marinelli, Bernard P. Boudreau
Journal of Marine Research
Macrofaunal irrigation is an important process in nearshore sediments, facilitating greater exchange between sediments and seawater and imparting significant lateral heterogeneity to the porewater profiles of many constituents. Like many macrofaunal activities, irrigation is a transient behavior, i.e. tubes and burrows are flushed periodically, at frequencies that generally are species-specific. As a result, transient concentrations within the dwelling arise, potentially impacting gradients, fluxes and reaction rates in the vicinity of the dwelling. We investigated the impact of periodic burrow irrigation on the distribution of several diagenetically important porewater constituents. Laboratory experiments evaluated irrigation periodicity using artificially irrigated tubes embedded in …

Carbon Export And Regeneration In The Coastal Upwelling System Of Monterey Bay, Central California, Cynthia H. Pilskaln, Jennifer B. Paduan, Francisco P. Chavez, Roger Y. Anderson, William M. Berelson
Journal of Marine Research
In order to quantify the role of coastal upwelling regions as source or sink areas for carbon, the relationships between particulate organic carbon (POC) production, export, remineralization, and accumulation were examined in Monterey Bay from 1989 through 1992. During a normal upwelling year (1989–90), a high positive correlation (r = 0.91) is observed between biweekly primary production and POC export at 450 m. Primary production values range from 500 mgC m−2 d−1 during the winter, to 2600 mgC m−2 d−1 in the spring and summer upwelling months. Corresponding deep-water (450 m) POC fluxes vary from …

Effects Of Mga On Prepubertal Beef Heifers, L. M. Butler, H. L. Miller, D. D. Zalesky, D. M. Marshall, K. Vanderwal, C. Moret
South Dakota Beef Report, 1996
A 2-year study (1 995 and 1996) utilized prepubertal beef heifers to study the effects of feeding MGA to induce puberty. Heifers were allotted to two groups, control or treatment, based on breed, age and weight. Treatment heifers received MGA for 14 days at a rate of .4 mglday with their diet, while control heifers received the same diet free of MGA. In year 1 (n = 55; control = 28, treatment = 27), heifers averaged 627.7 Ib and were 301.9 days of age at the start of the treatment. There was no difference in age at puberty (P=.65) with …

An avirulent, streptomycin-resistant Salmonella typhimurium strain, SL5319, and its lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-deficient mutant strain, SL5325, differ in their ability to colonize the large intestines of streptomycin-treated mice. When fed to mice independently, the strains colonize equally well, but when fed together, the LPS-deficient mutant is outcompeted by the wild-type strain during establishment in the gut (J.J. Nevola, B.A.D. Stocker, D.C. Laux, and P.S. Cohen, Infect. Immun. 50:152-159, 1985). In the present study, the spatial distribution in the intestinal mucosal layer of the two strains was visualized by specific hybridization to bacterial rRNA in histological sections of mouse colon and cecum. The …

Truth's Bright Embrace: Essays and Poems in Honor of Arthur O. Roberts
I view John Woolman's "A Plea for the Poor" through the eyes of my own experience. In particular, two aspects of my experience shape my vision: that of being an economist and that of being a Quaker. The economist in me is sensitive to statements about prices, wages, rents, production, distribution, equality, inequality, contracts, poverty and wealth. The Quaker in me responds especially to the language of the spirit. When Woolman speaks of God, the Creator, our Redeemer, Jesus Christ, pure wisdom, Divine love, tender mercies, universal love, the Fountain of universal light and love, our Lord, our Saviour and …

One of my favorite Far Sides shows a spider on an analyst's couch, saying, "It's the same dream night after night...I walk out on my web, and suddenly a foot sticks-and then another foot sticks, and another, and another, and another...." Gary Larsen's spider expresses the impression that people who are fascinated by language have: language is like a web. I spin it out thinking that I have it under control, and suddenly it seems I am caught in the system of words. I open my mouth to speak, and suddenly words appear or disappear, the wrong words come, or …

A Study On The Life History And Seasonal Foraging Habits Of The Salamander Desmognathus Quadramaculatus Holbrook, In Wv, Glenn R. Mills
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
A study was conducted on Desmognathus quadramaculatus in the northern periphery of its range with some aspects of its life history, surface density, and seasonal foraging habits. The results in this study are compared to studies done on D. quadramaculatus in the southern portion of its range. Female D. quadramaculatus have been found tending egg clutches from June to September in the southern portion of its range and data collected in this study shows that egg deposition also occurs during this period in the northern population. Female size (SVL) at which D. quadramaculatus reach sexual maturity ranged from 57.6- 77.5 …
An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Army Recruitment Television Advertising On High School Seniors, Jeffrey A. Dean
An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Army Recruitment Television Advertising On High School Seniors, Jeffrey A. Dean
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In order for Army recruiters in the Appalachian region to effectively reach their target audience through television advertising, they must know which segment within the overall stated target audience of high school seniors between the ages of 17 to 21 are most likely to be influenced by Army recruitment advertising. Recruiters must also determine the type of programming preferred by the primary target segment to enable recruiting messages to be placed in programming where it is likely to have the most impact and achieve maximum frequency of exposure among the most receptive audience.
Nitrogen Transformations In A Mitigated Wetland In The Green Bottom Wildlife Management Area, Mark Allen Fisher
Nitrogen Transformations In A Mitigated Wetland In The Green Bottom Wildlife Management Area, Mark Allen Fisher
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Soil nitrogen (N) dynamics have been shown to be quite sensitive to the soil hydrology. Creation of a mitigation freshwater wetland from an old field provided an opportunity to examine changes in N dynamics in terrestrial, aquatic (but formerly terrestrial), and transition (seasonally inundated) soils.
This thesis determined N availability using in situ incubations of soils taken from three distinct habitat conditions based on the degree of inundation following wetland creation: (1) old field (no inundation), (2) transition (seasonally inundated, initially beneath 10-20 cm of water), and (3) mitigation wetland (permanently inundated). Sample plots were located along five parallel transects …

Geographic Variation Of S̲O̲R̲E̲X̲ C̲I̲N̲E̲R̲E̲U̲S̲ In West Virginia, Lisa Jane Gatens
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The morphological and geographical diversity of Sorex cinereus is evident in West Virginia. In an attempt to identify patterns of morphological variation relative to age, sex, and geographic locality, and to clarify taxonomic status of the West Virginia soricids by defining diagnostic characters applicable to this area, a sample of 288 specimens representing three taxa were analyzed statistically. Standard external measurements were recorded, and a series of 12 cranial and dental characters were measured and recorded for each specimen. Morphological variation due to age was found in S. c. cinereus, but not in the smaller reference samples of S. …

An Analysis Of Habitat Utilization And Feeding Ecology Of Plethodon Richmondi And Plethodon Cinereus In Northern West Virginia, Peter A. Kramer
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Studies were conducted on the comparative microhabitat requirements and feeling habits of the ravine salamander, Plethodon richmondi and the redback salamander, P. cinereus in northern West Virginia. Plethodon richmondi had a mean SVL of 49.7 ± 7.1 mm and were significantly larger than P. cinereus which had a mean SVL of 37.2 ± 8.0 mm. Both species had biennial egg laying patterns and deposited eggs in late spring or early summer. Juvenile P. richmondi were not surface active except for the early spring and neonates did not become surface active until the ensuing spring; conversely, P. cinereus juveniles exhibited more …
Religious Orientation And Homophobia: An Application Of The Allport And Batson Conceptualizations, Scotty K. Caudill
Religious Orientation And Homophobia: An Application Of The Allport And Batson Conceptualizations, Scotty K. Caudill
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study elucidates the relationship between the intrinsic, extrinsic, and quest religious orientations and prejudice toward gay men and lesbians. Measures of the religious orientations, homophobia, social desirability, and demographic items were administered to 228 university student volunteers. As predicted, the intrinsic orientation correlated positively and significantly with homophobia even with social desirability controlled, and the quest orientation correlated negatively and significantly with homophobia, also with social desirability controlled. Contrary to prediction, however, the extrinsic orientation di d not correlate significantly with homophobia. These findings support previous research suggesting that an intrinsic orientation does not obviate prejudicial attitudes toward all …
