Homosexual Marriage And The Myth Of Tolerance: Is Cardinal O'Connor A "Homophobe"?, Richard F. Duncan Jan 1996

Homosexual Marriage And The Myth Of Tolerance: Is Cardinal O'Connor A "Homophobe"?, Richard F. Duncan

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

Duncan explains why he believes the heterosexual norm should be defended in what well may be the decisive moment of the sexual revolution--the battle over the meaning of marriage in human community. In particular, Duncan will focus on an aspect of this controversy that he notes often goes unnoticed--the impact of a paradigm shift on the "old order," on those who continue to affirm the conventional understanding of sexual morality and marriage.

Public Schools And The Inevitability Of Religious Inequality, Richard F. Duncan Jan 1996

Public Schools And The Inevitability Of Religious Inequality, Richard F. Duncan

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

This article discusses the political and social implications of current attempts to amend the Constitution to ensure "religious equality." Two specific proposed amendments to the U.S. Constitution will be analyzed--the Istook Amendment and the Hyde-Hatch Amendment. This article concludes that although the Hyde-Hatch Amendment is the more acceptable of the two, neither amendment achieves the elusive goal of ensuring religious equality.

The William Sloane Kennedy Memorial Collection Of Whitmaniana, Kathleen J. Reich

Books about Rollins College and Winter Park

This catalog describes the inventory of archival materials in the William Sloane Kennedy Papers and The Walt Whitman collection in the Rollins College archives and special collections department.

"In biographies of Walt Whitman, William Sloane Kennedy usually gets little more than a brief mention as one of Whitman's most fervid supporters late in the poet's life. He deserves far more attention, however, and the appearance of this catalogue of the William Sloane Kennedy Memorial Collection of Whitmaniana at Rollins College will facilitate the kind of careful study that his life and work clearly merit." From the Preface by Ed Folsom.

Cyanonews (Vol. 12, No. 1, January 1996), Jeff Elhai Jan 1996

Cyanonews (Vol. 12, No. 1, January 1996), Jeff Elhai

CyanoNews

CyanoNews was a newsletter that served the cyanobacteriological community from 1985 to 2003, with content provided by readers (sort of a blog before there were blogs). The newsletter reported new findings from the lab, summaries of recent meetings (often provided by graduate students and post-docs entering the field), positions sought or available, life transitions, a compendium of recent cyanobacteria-related articles, and other items of interest to those who study cyanobacteria.

Unplanned Resistance: Turkish Immigrants In A Postmodern Germany, Peter O'Brien Jan 1996

Unplanned Resistance: Turkish Immigrants In A Postmodern Germany, Peter O'Brien

Political Science Faculty Research

Postmodernity would seem to bode ill for immigrant communities like the Turks living in Germany. Prominent theories of postmodern society, when analyzed in respect to the status of immigrants, pit several strikes against them. Taking as a given that Germany deserves the label "postmodern society," this essay discusses three such theories and draws out the implications of each for Turkish nationals residing in Germany. The findings are anything but merry. If the theories prove true, Turkish migrants from Turkey should expect little or no improvement in their lot and, worse, deterioration. This said, I refuse to conclude the essay on …

The Womack, Gilbert, And Pearson Sites: Early Eighteenth Century Tunican Entrepots In Northeast Texas, Frank Schambach Jan 1996

The Womack, Gilbert, And Pearson Sites: Early Eighteenth Century Tunican Entrepots In Northeast Texas, Frank Schambach

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

For the past few months, I have been working on a detailed response to a paper by James Bruseth, Diane Wilson, and Timothy Perttula published in the fall issue of Plains Anthropologist. There, these authors challenge my Sanders entrepot hypothesis and my new paradigm for the Mississippi period archeology of the Arkansas Valley, claiming that the Sanders focus, as propounded by Alex D. Krieger, is alive and well, so much so that they have renamed it the Sanders phase to ready it for service in the 1990s and beyond.

Of Hearths And Houses, Tom Middlebrook, Ryan Middlebrook

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

During the 1993 East Texas Archeological Field School conducted at the Tyson site (41SY92) in western Shelby County, the junior author had an opportunity to participate in the excavation of a Caddoan hearth. The work was directed by Linda Lindsay, a graduate student in Anthropology at Southern Methodist University. This paper describes our findings and a few features of hearths and houses.

One goal of the 1993 Field School was to explore the area around Feature 3 looking for evidence of a house. This was accomplished by opening a 6 meter by 6 meter unit referred to as Block 1. …

Final Report Of Test Excavations At Site 41pc476 Along S.H. 349 In Pecos County, Texas, Barbara J. Hickman

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The present report outlines all investigations at site 41PC476 from June 26-30, 1996. It also details the methods used and the results obtained during test excavation of the site. A brief analysis of the cultural materials identified at the site is included. Eroded burned rock concentrations are exposed on the surface of site 4 1PC476, and fire-cracked rock was found below the ground surface as well. Although a few lithic artifacts were found in test excavations, no ethnobotanical remains were identified. All diagnostic artifacts were recovered from the surface. The artifactual evidence indicates an Archaic period occupation with lithic activities …

Track Structure And Radiation Transport Model For Space Radiobiology Studies, F. A. Cucinotta, J. W. Wilson, Robert Katz, W. Atwell, G. D. Badhwar, M. R. Shavers Jan 1996

Track Structure And Radiation Transport Model For Space Radiobiology Studies, F. A. Cucinotta, J. W. Wilson, Robert Katz, W. Atwell, G. D. Badhwar, M. R. Shavers

Robert Katz Publications

Radiobiology experiments performed in space are deemed necessary for validation of risk-assessment methods. The understanding of space radiobiology experiments must combine knowledge of the space radiation environment, radiation transport, and models of biological response. The heavy ion transport code HZETRN has recently been combined with improved models of the galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and extensive comparisons made to measurements on the space shuttle with a tissue equivalent, proportional counter. HZETRN was also coupled with track-structure models of biological damage from heavy ions. Track-structure calculations using improved models of the radial dose distribution around the path of heavy ions provide a …

The Role Of Mesoscale Hydrography On Microbial Dynamics In The Northeast Atlantic: Results Of A Spring Bloom Experiment, B. Karrasch, H. G. Hoppe, S. Ullrich, S. Podewski Jan 1996

The Role Of Mesoscale Hydrography On Microbial Dynamics In The Northeast Atlantic: Results Of A Spring Bloom Experiment, B. Karrasch, H. G. Hoppe, S. Ullrich, S. Podewski

Journal of Marine Research

During RV Meteor cruise No. 10 from May to June 1989 (JGOFS pilot study) bacterial and picocyanobacterial abundance, biomass, and bacterial production were estimated at two drift stations close to 47N, 20W and 58N, 20W in the northeast Atlantic. At 47N two different mesoscale hydrographic structures were sampled which divided the drift experiment into a cyclonic and an anticyclonic circulation phase. Transition from one phase to the next was clearly reflected by changes of the biological structure in the upper water column. Phytoplankton stocks maintained during the cyclonic phase were about 1.8 times higher than those of the anticyclonic phase …

Biological Removal Of Fine-Grained Lithogenic Particles From A Large River Plume, M. J. Dagg, E. P. Green, B. A. Mckee, P. B. Ortner Jan 1996

Biological Removal Of Fine-Grained Lithogenic Particles From A Large River Plume, M. J. Dagg, E. P. Green, B. A. Mckee, P. B. Ortner

Journal of Marine Research

The pelagic tunicate, Oikopleura dioica, feeds by non-selectively filtering particles in the size range of 0.2–20 μm. In the northern Gulf of Mexico, particulate matter in this size range contains large amounts of fine-grained lithogenic material because of the influence of the Mississippi River. During May 1992, O. dioica populations filtered between 2 and 44% (mean = 20%) of the upper 5 m each day. The filtered lithogenic particles either remain in the oikopleurid house or are defecated in fecal pellets which have high sinking velocities. Either way, the larvacean populations significantly alter the fates of fine-grained lithogenic particles …

Fluid Flow And Suspended Particulates As Determinants Of Polychaete Feeding Behavior, Michael J. Bock, Douglas C. Miller Jan 1996

Fluid Flow And Suspended Particulates As Determinants Of Polychaete Feeding Behavior, Michael J. Bock, Douglas C. Miller

Journal of Marine Research

We examined the interactive effects of fluid flow, bed characteristics and suspended load on the feeding behavior of four species of marine polychaetes. Two species of obligate deposit feeders (Marenzelleria viridis and Ampharete parvidentata) and two species of palp-coiling facultative suspension feeders (Spiochaetopterus oculatus and Spio setosa) were exposed to flow and sediment-bed treatments that served to decouple fluid flow and particle flux. We employed low (no particle transport), medium (transport of flocs only) and high (transport of sand) flow speeds in factorial treatments of natural sediment, winnowed bed (flocs removed), armored bed (no sand transport …

Plankton Production In Tidal Fronts: A Model Of Georges Bank In Summer, Peter J. S. Franks, Changsheng Chen Jan 1996

Plankton Production In Tidal Fronts: A Model Of Georges Bank In Summer, Peter J. S. Franks, Changsheng Chen

Journal of Marine Research

A two-dimensional (x,z) coupled physical-biological model of the plankton on Georges Bank during the summer was developed. The physical portion included a primitive-equation turbulence-closure model with topography-following σ coordinate. The biological model was a simple N-P-Z model. Tidal forcing at the model boundary generated a well-mixed region on the top of the bank, and strong tidal fronts at the bank edges. Biological fields were homogenized on the bank, while pronounced phytoplankton patches and horizontal gradients in properties developed in the fronts. The biomasses and fluxes of biological variables in the model agreed well with field estimates from Georges …

The Classification And Structure Of Megafaunal Assemblages In The Venezuela Basin, Caribbean Sea, Kevin B. Briggs, Michael D. Richardson, David K. Young Jan 1996

The Classification And Structure Of Megafaunal Assemblages In The Venezuela Basin, Caribbean Sea, Kevin B. Briggs, Michael D. Richardson, David K. Young

Journal of Marine Research

Data from 23 benthic trawls collected from the Venezuela Basin (3411–5062 m water depth) indicate that megafauna are less abundant than in basins of similar depths in the Atlantic and are segregated by sedimentary province. Taxonomic assemblages, in terms of abundance and biomass, from three sites coincide with distinctions of sedimentary characteristics among the pelagic, hemipelagic and turbidite sedimentary provinces. Mollusks, decapods and fishes are most abundant in trawls collected from the pelagic and hemipelagic provinces and anemones and holothurians are most abundant in trawls collected from the turbidite province. Sponges dominate the biomass of fauna in trawls collected in …
