Use Of The (3)H-Tetracycline Rat Model In The Study Of Skeletal Compartmentalization And Metabolism Of Calcium In The Maturing Male And Female Rat And The Role Of The Skeleton In Calcium Homeostasis In The Adolescent Male Rat, Darrin Lee Demoss
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The (3)H-tetracycline bone labeling procedure was employed to monitor bone resorption from urinary loss curves in male and female rats of various ages. In addition, whole body dry skeletal mass and the loss of (3)H-tetracycline from individual bones was determined. It was found that the dry skeletal mass/body mass ratio of 24-week-old females was 30-40% greater than that for males. The urinary loss of (3)H-tetracycline was described by a double exponential equation indicating the presence of two distinct and independent exchangeable bone compartments. Both compartments decrease in size with age, but their label loss activities were different. The label loss …

Effect Of Retinoic Acid On The Expression And Function Of Ap-1 Transcription Factor In B16 Mouse Melanoma Cells: Role Of Protein Kinase, Sejal H. Desai
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Retinoic acid (RA) induces differentiation of B16 mouse melanoma cells. This differentiation is accompanied by an increase in protein kinase Ca (PKCα) protein level and selective enrichment in nuclear-associated PKCα. PKC is thought to regulate gene expression through the TPA response element (TRE). This element is specifically recognized by the AP-1 transcription factor composed of jun and fos family members. In this study, I have analyzed the effect of RA on the expression and function of AP-1 in B16 mouse melanoma cells. Transient transfection analysis of B16 cells using leuciferase reporter gene constructs with or without AP-1 elements indicated that …
Regulation Of Melanogenesis In B16 Mouse Melanoma Cells By Protein Kinase C (Pkc), Harish Mahalingam
Regulation Of Melanogenesis In B16 Mouse Melanoma Cells By Protein Kinase C (Pkc), Harish Mahalingam
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The pigment cell-specific expression of tyrosinase and TRP1 has been shown to be important for the production of melanin in pigmented cells. Using a pigmented cell line, B16 mouse melanoma, we obtained evidence that PKC plays a major role in regulating melanogenesis. Chronic treatment with phorbol dibutyrate (PDBu) leads to downregulation of PKC activity and protein levels. This is accompanied by a loss of pigmentation which is correlated with a 50% reduction and a complete loss of TRP1 and tyrosinase respectively. Similar results were obtained with Northern and Western blotting indicating that PKC may regulate the steady state levels of …

Genetic Analysis Of Rhinichthys Atratulus (Pisces: Cyprinidae) In North Central West Virginia, Alan Harper Tennant
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The blacknose dace, Rhinichthys atratulus, is a cyprinid minnow common to shallow streams throughout North America. It has been shown to be sensitive to anthropogenic stress and a study of the genetic nature of R. atratulus populations may yield information about their habitats. In West Virginia, two subspecies of R. atratulus are present, R. a. atratulus and R. a. obtusus, which are separated by the Allegheny divide. In north central West Virginia, R. a. atratulus was observed in the Cheat River drainage, an area previously thought be within the range of R. a. obtusus. Fish of the R. a. atratulus …

Culture, Ideology, And Community: The Dynamics Of Accommodation And Resistance To Restructuring Of The Mexican Sugar Sector, Donna Chollett
Culture, Ideology, And Community: The Dynamics Of Accommodation And Resistance To Restructuring Of The Mexican Sugar Sector, Donna Chollett
Anthropology Publications
Neoliberalism has provoked profound and diverse consequences for rural Mexico, escalating the agricultural crisis for producers and workers in various sectors. Against this context, recent improvements in the sugar sector raise interesting questions about its relative economic success under the neoliberal paradigm. This article contrasts two cane zones--one that experienced economic recovery and another affected by abandonment of the sugar mill--to argue that in the interstices of modernizing neoliberalism, cane growers and mill workers who were subjected to politics of exclusion struggle to ensure the survival of their culture, community, and economic livelihood.

Reproductive Strategies In A Population Of Gobiosoma Bosci (Osteichthyes: Gobiidae) With Slow And Fast Maturing Individuals, Candace H. Conn, David L. Bechler
Gulf and Caribbean Research
The reproductive biology of Gobiosoma bosci collected from November 1986 to October 1987 in the McFaddin Wildlife Refuge in southeast Texas was studied by using morphometric data. Males achieved greater weights per unit length than females, and longevity was about 12 to 13 months. GSI values and mean monthly ovum diameters indicated that the breeding season ran from April to September, with a major activity peak in May and a minor peak in September. Significant differences in male and female standard lengths (SL), ovum diameter, and egg number existed for sexually mature specimens between the first and second peaks of …

Observations On An Isolated Population Of Sagitta Hispida Conant (Chaetognatha) In A Tropical Lagoon System Of Northeast Yucatan (Mexico), Jose N. Alvarez-Cadena, Eduardo Suarez-Morales, Jerry A. Mclelland
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Monthly zooplankton collections were carried out from January to December 1991 at two sampling sites, Cuenca Norte and Bojórquez lagoon, in the Nichupté lagoon system, a partially enclosed network of interconnected waterways located in the northeastern region of the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) adjacent to the Caribbean Sea. Only one species of Chaetognatha, Sagitta hispida Conant, was present and was more abundant at Cuenca Norte (total density 450.6 organisms/m3) than at Bojórquez (138.6 organisms/m3). The latter site is smaller, more physically isolated, and more environmentally stressed than the former. From monthly gonadal and length-frequency analyses of 1390 specimens, it was found …

Design Of Graduate Program Home Page For The School Of Food, Hotel And Travel Management, Mei-Jung Cheng
Theses
The graduate program home page was designed for two target markets: potential graduate students and potential employers for our graduate students. To attract more students enrolling in the School of Food, Hotel and Travel Management (FHTM) at RIT and increase the graduate students recruited opportunity by outside company, it is necessary to let those two groups know what the school is doing and what students are learning during the academic years by simply viewing the web pages. The graduate page design was emphasized on the functions of frames and hyperlinks because the frames are getting popular on the Internet. Further, …
