A Century Of Change In The Black Hills And Riparian Ecosystems, J. B. Parrish, D. J. Herman, D. J. Reyher, F. R. Gartner
A Century Of Change In The Black Hills And Riparian Ecosystems, J. B. Parrish, D. J. Herman, D. J. Reyher, F. R. Gartner
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
This paper summarizes changes in forests, riparian areas, and wildlife of the Black Hills since Euro-American settlement in the 1870s. Specific objectives were to:
1) Document conditions of forests, riparian ecosystems, and associated wildlife prior to Euro-American settlement in the 1870s through historical references; and,
2) Compare historical and current conditions to ascertain ecosystem shifts incurred during the past 120 years.

Behavioral Basis Of Second Intermediate Host Specificity Among Four Species Of Haematoloechus (Digenea: Haematoloechidae), Scott D. Snyder, John J. Janovy Jr.
Biology Faculty Publications
Cercarial behavior patterns were examined in four species of frog lung flukes (Haematoloechus spp.). Cercariae of Haematoloechus complexus, Haematoloechus medioplexus, Haematoloechus longiplexus, and Haematoloechus varioplexus were exposed to three species of experimental arthropods and an inanimate control. The number of cercariae attached to an experimental host at 5 min postexposure was recorded. Haematoloechus longiplexus and H. complexus cercariae attached to experimental hosts at higher rates than cercariae of H. medioplexus and H. varioplexus. Cercariae of H. longiplexus attached to experimental hosts in approximately the same numbers as H. complexus, but H. longiplexus penetrated only damselfly naiads, …

Environmental Air Pollution Analysis In Selected Areas Of Abu Dhabi Emirate, Mahfoodh Abdulla Mohammed Darbool
Environmental Air Pollution Analysis In Selected Areas Of Abu Dhabi Emirate, Mahfoodh Abdulla Mohammed Darbool
Theses
There are little data available for environmental pollution, as well as air pollution and statistical information published in the United Arab Emirates. Especially, Abu Dhabi Emirate, has been the location of the UAE's most persistent and extreme levels of industrial oil waste and chemical smog and air pollutants which produces sulphur dioxide emission. In addition, has a high vehicle population, which produces carbon monoxide emission from the motor vehicle exhaust. The acute toxicity of carbon monoxide (CO) has long been recognized and well documented. The motor vehicle is by far the largest contributor to Co accounting for 55% of total …

The Visceral Retia Mirabilia Of Tuna And Sharks: An Annotated Translation And Discussion Of The Eschricht And Müller 1835 Paper And Related Papers, Douglas S. Fudge, E. Don Stevens
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
The focus of this volume is an annotated translation of the classic work by J. Müller and D.F. Eschricht on the visceral anatomy of the bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus, published in 1835. This text, with its outstanding figures, is to this day the definitive work on the anatomy of the bluefin viscera and especially on the circulation to and from the viscera. In addition, the text is historically important in that it represents the first comprehensive description of visceral relia mirabilia in a fish. In this work, Eschricht & Müller meticulously elucidate the pattern of blood flow to, within, …

Immunofluorescent Localization Of Rubpcase In Degraded C4 Grass Tissue, M. S. Miller, Lowell E. Moser, Steven S. Waller, Terry J. Klopfenstein, B. H. Kirch
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Digestion-resistant tissues found in C4 grasses may allow soluble protein to escape rumen degradation. The objective of this study was to use immunofluorescent localization to follow loss of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCase) from switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) and big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman) parenchyma bundle sheath cells (BSC) during rumen degradation. Fluorescent signal was observed from switchgrass and big bluestem BSC through 24 and 16 h in situ digestion, respectively, and from BSC associated with both intact tissue fragments, and isolated vascular bundles in omasal digesta and fecal material from steers (Bos tarus L.) grazing switchgrass. Immunofluorescent …

Toward A "Due Foundation" For The Separation Of Powers: The Federalist Papers As Political Narrative, Victoria Nourse
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
During the past quarter century, lawyers have become strangely comfortable with descriptions of our government's structure that would, to an untutored ear, speak contradiction. We are quite satisfied to say that governmental powers are separate and shared, departments distinct and overlapping, functions autonomous and interdependent. We have settled into these contradictions as we would a roomy chair: talking this way is no longer controversial but taken for granted, uttered with a knowing wink, perceived as the starting point of sophisticated analysis. A not "entirely separate," but "entirely free," set of departments is the only way we can think about the …

Ecotourism Attractions Of Ruteng Nature Recreation Park, Indonesia, Bill Buffum
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
This document describes the major ecotourism attractions of the Ruteng Nature Recreation Park in Flores, which was established in August 1993. Development of the Park began in 1995 with assistance from the Indonesia Biodiversity Conservation Project (IBCP) funded by the Asian Development Bank. I served as the Team Leader of the IBCP in Flores (1995-1996). My major tasks were supervising the completion of a 25 year management plan for the Park, and providing technical assistance during the first year of implementation of the new management plan. Another task was preparing this short booklet for visitors that describes the major ecotourism …

Vote Dilution And The Census Undercount: A State-By-State Remedy, Christopher M. Taylor
Vote Dilution And The Census Undercount: A State-By-State Remedy, Christopher M. Taylor
Michigan Law Review
This Note argues that groups seeking to correct underrepresentation caused by the differential undercount do not have standing to sue the Secretary of Commerce but that they can sue their state governments in an effort to force them to use the best population data available in the construction of congressional districts. Part I details the deeply rooted character of the differential undercount, describes statistical means that could have been employed to adjust the 1990 census, and demonstrates that the adjusted count surpasses the official census as an accurate representation of the true population. Part II examines recent litigation that has …

Inducible Metabolism Of Fluoranthene By The Opportunistic Polychaete Capitella Sp. I, Valery E. Forbes, Thomas L. Forbes, Marianne Holmer
Valery Forbes Publications
The polychaete Capitella sp. I has been described as an enrichment opportunist and is one of very few species able to thrive in highly organic sediments heavily contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and other organic pollutants. We examined 3 plausible explanations for the success of Capitella sp. 1: (1) worms prevent uptake of PAH across body surfaces, (2) worms take up PAH but metabolize them effectively to excretable forms, and (3) worms utilize PAH as a carbon source. We examined the uptake and depuration of sediment-associated fluoranthene by Capitella sp. 1 and measured the metabolic loss of ingested 3-[ …
