Theses

For my thesis, I have developed a sales promotional package utilizing print and interactive media. Because technology is rapidly changing, I utilized multimedia and print media, by merging them into one project. For this interactive/print project, I created a marketing sales package that markets handcrafted jewelry to wholesale buyers. The two media interact as a buying source that is easily and inexpensively sent to the buyers. This service is very unique, and also provides buyers with alternatives to buying and viewing at the annual shows. The user can purchase wholesale handcrafted jewelry from their office or home without having to …

A System For Structured Management Of Hypermedia Resources For The World Wide Web, Kevin L. Marlowe Mar 1996

A System For Structured Management Of Hypermedia Resources For The World Wide Web, Kevin L. Marlowe

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

The World Wide Web (WWW) is arguably the preferred method for disseminating information across the Internet. Most of the work to support the advancement of WWW technology has focused on servers used in storing and retrieving information, browsers for viewing this information, and editors or filters for creating the information.

One area which has received little attention is that of actually managing this information at the local host. This thesis describes the development of a means for organizing local data prior to its publishing on the WWW, a method for gathering local pages together and preparing them for distribution, and …

De Collisione Discursuum: Communicative Rationalities In Law, Morality, And Politics, Gunther Teubner Mar 1996

De Collisione Discursuum: Communicative Rationalities In Law, Morality, And Politics, Gunther Teubner

Cardozo Law Review

At the end of the seventeenth century, Johan Nikolaus Hert, a German legal scholar of Roman private law, wrote the treatise De Collisione Legum. He was dealing with one of the most disturbing experiences in his epoch of the emerging nation states-the experience that on earth there was more than one law, more than one justice. Hert stood in stark contrast to his more famous French contemporary, the brilliant Blaise Pascal, who reacted to the same problem with critique, deconstruction, and irony: "A funny justice that ends at a river! Truth on this side of the Pyrenees, error on …

Legitimacy And Diversity: Dialectical Reflections On Analytical Distinctions, Thomas Mccarthy Mar 1996

Legitimacy And Diversity: Dialectical Reflections On Analytical Distinctions, Thomas Mccarthy

Cardozo Law Review

Jurgen Habermas's discourse theory of democracy has repeatedly been criticized for placing too much emphasis on consensus and not enough on conflict. He wants, it seems, to defend a discourse-theoretical version of the "general will" as the key to democratic legitimacy, whatever the cost. The costs are usually reckoned in terms of the theory's tenuous relation to the hurly-burly of democratic practice, where disagreement is the rule and unanimity is in short supply. Many of these criticisms miss their target, for they are often based on superficial readings and serious misunderstandings. But enough of them hit the mark to indicate …

Communicative Power And The Concept Of Law, Ulrich K. Preub Mar 1996

Communicative Power And The Concept Of Law, Ulrich K. Preub

Cardozo Law Review

The idea that the law was founded on the self-interest and the will of rational individuals was first developed and proven in the social contract theories of Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau. These theorists reacted-admittedly, in extremely different ways-to the problem of finding a collective basis in a world which had lost its common religious fundaments and the economic basis of feudal communal life. The European world of the seventeenth century had fallen apart. The universalism of the catholic world had been replaced by a plurality of subjective worldviews championed by individuals, groups, sects, and new social entities. How could one …

Cd40-Cd40 Ligand Interactions In Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis And Multiple Sclerosis., Koen Gerritse, Jon D. Laman, Randolph J. Noelle, Alejandro Aruffo Mar 1996

Cd40-Cd40 Ligand Interactions In Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis And Multiple Sclerosis., Koen Gerritse, Jon D. Laman, Randolph J. Noelle, Alejandro Aruffo

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigated the role of CD40-CD40 ligand (CD40L) interactions in multiple sclerosis (MS) and experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE). Activated helper T cells expressing CD40L (gp39) surface protein were found in MS patient brain sections, but not in brain tissue sections of normal controls or patients with other neurological disease. CD40L-positive cells were co-localized with CD40-bearing cells in active lesions (perivascular infiltrates). Most of these CD40-bearing cells proved to be of the monocytic lineage (macrophages or microglial cells), and relatively few were B cells. To functionally evaluate CD40-CD40L interactions, EAE was elicited in mice by means of proteolipid-peptide immunization. Treatment with …

Antisense Oligodeoxynucleotide Inhibition Of A Swelling-Activated Cation Channel In Osteoblast-Like Osteosarcoma Cells., Randall L. Duncan, Neil Kizer, Elizabeth L. Barry, Peter P A Friedman, Keith A. Hruska Mar 1996

Antisense Oligodeoxynucleotide Inhibition Of A Swelling-Activated Cation Channel In Osteoblast-Like Osteosarcoma Cells., Randall L. Duncan, Neil Kizer, Elizabeth L. Barry, Peter P A Friedman, Keith A. Hruska

Dartmouth Scholarship

By patch-clamp analysis, we have shown that chronic, intermittent mechanical strain (CMS) increases the activity of stretch-activated cation channels of osteoblast-like UMR-106.01 cells. CMS also produces a swelling-activated whole-cell conductance (Gm) regulated by varying strain levels. We questioned whether the swelling-activated conductance was produced by stretch-activated cation channel activity. We have identified a gene involved in the increase in conductance by using antisense oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) derived from the alpha 1-subunit genes of calcium channels found in UMR-106.01 cells (alpha1S, alpha1C, and alpha1D). We demonstrate that alpha 1C antisense ODNs abolish the increase in Gm in response to hypotonic swelling following …

Marketing Options For Quality Kentucky Alfalfa Hay, Tom Keene Feb 1996

Marketing Options For Quality Kentucky Alfalfa Hay, Tom Keene

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

As today's farmer becomes more and more business like, running his farming operation as a commercial business, the production of alfalfa hay should be treated no differently. When the farmer makes the decision to plant alfalfa, he should have already done a great deal of research and given a great deal of thought into the markets he is going to try to target for his product. Any successful commercial business looks into market potential even before production begins, whether they produce toys, cars, appliances, computers, etc. Alfalfa hay production should be no different in regards to seeking out various markets …

Utilizing Alfalfa Hay In Horse Diets, Laurie Lawrence Feb 1996

Utilizing Alfalfa Hay In Horse Diets, Laurie Lawrence

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

All horses need fiber in their diets. Forages, usually as pasture or hay, are the primary sources of fiber in most rations. The exact amount of hay that a horse will eat on a daily or yearly basis will depend on the size of the horse, the class of the horse (pregnant, working, etc) and the type of hay being fed. The type and amount of other feeds in the ration will also impact the amount of hay consumed, but in general, horse owners/managers should try to maximize forage intake and then supplement with grain or other feeds to meet …

Fencing And Watering Systems For Grazing Alfalfa, Larry Turner Feb 1996

Fencing And Watering Systems For Grazing Alfalfa, Larry Turner

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Controlled or rotational grazing can result in better utilization of the forage resources on your farm. By better forage management through controlled grazing, you can increase profitability of cattle/forage systems. To effectively develop a controlled grazing system, however, fencing must be used to subdivide the pasture into sub-fields or paddocks. The animals may then be rotated among the paddocks to optimize forage and beef or dairy production from the system. Alfalfa grazing can play an important part in such a system. By using alfalfa, additional grazing management options are available, including avoiding high-endophyte fescue in hot summer periods thereby gaining …

Opportunities For Alfalfa As A Grazing Crop In Kentucky, Ken Johnson Feb 1996

Opportunities For Alfalfa As A Grazing Crop In Kentucky, Ken Johnson

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

As we think about the possibilities of alfalfa as a grazing crop, maybe we need to look at some of the limitations and where alfalfa may fit into Kentucky producers programs.

When looking at Kentucky's land area of 25 million acres we see that nearly half is in woodland. Of the 12 million acres remaining; about 3 million is in row crops, 2 million in hay, 2 million in non farm uses, and the rest is pasture. That is about 5 million acres in pasture or at least available to the pastured. With at least 7 million acres in hay …

Grazing Alfalfa: Putting The Puzzle Together, Garry D. Lacefield, Jimmy C. Henning, David Stalion

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Interest in alfalfa as a grazing crop has increased dramatically over the past decade. There are many research and demonstrations being conducted in Kentucky and across the U.S. as we continue to investigate and learn more about alfalfa's role in forage-based livestock production.

Listed below are some of the reasons farmers, researchers and agribusiness personnel are excited about the opportunity for alfalfa as a grazing crop.
