Toward A Developmental Model Of Social Policy: Relevance Of The Third World Experience, James Midgley Mar 1996

Toward A Developmental Model Of Social Policy: Relevance Of The Third World Experience, James Midgley

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Growing dissatisfaction with conventional social policy approaches, as embodied in the residual and institutional models, has fostered a search for new ideas. The developmental social policy model offers a viable alternative but it is relatively unknown in the industrial nations. Drawing on the experience of Third World countries, this paper describes the developmental model and examines its implications for social policy in the West.

Soleus Fiber Force And Maximal Shortening Velocity After Non-Weight Bearing With Intermittent Activity, Jeffrey J. Widrick, J. J. Bangart, M. Karhanek, Robert H. Fitts Mar 1996

Soleus Fiber Force And Maximal Shortening Velocity After Non-Weight Bearing With Intermittent Activity, Jeffrey J. Widrick, J. J. Bangart, M. Karhanek, Robert H. Fitts

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This study examined the effectiveness of intermittent weight bearing (IWB) as a countermeasure to non-weight-bearing (NWB)-induced alterations in soleus type I fiber force (in mN), tension (Po; force per fiber cross-sectional area in kN/m-2), and maximal unloaded shortening velocity (Vo, in fiber lengths/s). Adult rats were assigned to one of the following groups: normal weight bearing (WB), 14 days of hindlimb NWB (NWB group), and 14 days of hindlimb NWB with IWB treatments (IWB group). The IWB treatment consisted of four 10-min periods of standing WB each day. Single, chemically permeabilized soleus fiber segments …

Deforestation In Cambodia And Malaysia: The Case For An International Legal Solution, Heather A. Wolf Mar 1996

Deforestation In Cambodia And Malaysia: The Case For An International Legal Solution, Heather A. Wolf

Washington International Law Journal

The logging of tropical timber for the export market is the primary cause of deforestation in Southeast Asia. The problem of controlling the tropical timber trade has been addressed on both the national and international level. The existing legal mechanisms, however, have proven to be inadequate. A new multilateral agreement based on the import and export permit system of the Basel Agreement is necessary to control the timber trade and to aid in halting deforestation.

Association Between Nutrient Intake And Risk Of Coronary Heart Disease In California Seventh-Day Adventists, Peter Pribiš Mar 1996

Association Between Nutrient Intake And Risk Of Coronary Heart Disease In California Seventh-Day Adventists, Peter Pribiš

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Dietary habits are believed to be major determinants of risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Studies of high and low risk populations have suggested several nutrients to be protective or hazardous against CHD. Most published work since 1984 on diet and CHD in the Adventist Health Study (AHS) population examined either foods or food groups. This study investigated ten nutrients as exposure variables and their relationship to CHD risk. A cohort of 23,616 nonsmoking, non-Hispanic white California Seventh-day Adventists was followed for six years beginning in 1976. Extensive dietary information was collected at baseline, as well as values of traditional …

Biochemical And Mutational Analysis Of The Histidine Residues Of Staphylococcal Enterotoxin A., M Hoffman, M Tremaine, J Mansfield, M Betley Mar 1996

Biochemical And Mutational Analysis Of The Histidine Residues Of Staphylococcal Enterotoxin A., M Hoffman, M Tremaine, J Mansfield, M Betley

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

The goal of this study was to examine the role of histidine residues in the biological activities of staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA). Carboxymethylated SEA was unable to stimulate murine T-cell proliferation but was resistant to monkey stomach lavage fluid degradation, suggesting that native conformation was intact. Site-directed mutagenesis of the histidine residues of SEA was subsequently performed. SEA-H44A (SEA with histidine 44 replaced with alanine), SEA-H44D, SEA-H50A, SEA-H50D, SEA-H114A, SEA-H114D, SEA-H187A, and SEA-H187D retained superantigen and emetic activities, whereas SEA-H225A and SEA-H225D were defective in the ability to stimulate T-cell proliferation. These mutants were unable to compete with SEA for …

Endogenous Amino Acid Losses In Pigs And Poultry: A Review(การสูญเสียกรดอะมิโนภายในระบบทางเดินอาหารของไก่และสุกร : บทความ), Kris Angkanaporn, Wayne L. Bryden, Velmurugu Ravindran Mar 1996

Endogenous Amino Acid Losses In Pigs And Poultry: A Review(การสูญเสียกรดอะมิโนภายในระบบทางเดินอาหารของไก่และสุกร : บทความ), Kris Angkanaporn, Wayne L. Bryden, Velmurugu Ravindran

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Considerable quantities of non-dietary protein are secreted into the digesta of pigs and poultry. This protein is defined as the protein found in the chyme or faeces when a nitrogen-free diet is fed to animals. Endogenous proteins comprise protein, peptides, amino acids and nitrogen-containing substances from saliva, bile, pancreatic, gastric and intestinal secretions; plasma and sloughed epithelial cells. These endogenous proteins are digested and absorbed in a manner similar to those of dietary origin. Conventional approaches to the estimation of obligatory loss have included the measurement of amino acid excretion in fasted animals, in animals fed on protein-free diets, or …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Infection with the fluke Fasciola gigantica was detected by the ELISA and the beads techniques and used to determine the antibody titre and egg count per gram (epg) in cattle and buffalo respectively. Each group of 4 cattle and 4 buffalo were infected with 500 and 1000 metacercariae. The experiments were carried out over a period of 28 weeks with sampling taking place every 2-4 weeks. Using the ELISA test, the results revealed, that the patterns of antibody titres against F. gigantica in infected cattle and buffalo, were similar. The earliest ELISA titre detection of 500 metacercariae infected cattle was …

Law And Order, Arthur J. Jacobson Mar 1996

Law And Order, Arthur J. Jacobson

Cardozo Law Review

Every jurisprudence offers a distinctive image of order. Any order-whether of action, logic, or material-describes the ongoing operation of a set of principles or criteria. Principles define an order as the cause of an operation; criteria define it as the effect of other operations. The operation of a set of principles or criteria constituting an order allows observers effectively to distinguish that order from other orders or from no order at all.

An order is static when it is possible for observers to describe operation of the set of principles or criteria constituting the order at a single moment, without …

Dukes, Janet B. Payeur, Jack C. Rhyan, Dennis A. Saari, Terry L. Whiting, Susan H. Wilson, Jerald L. Jarnagin

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Using the isolation of Mycobacterium bovis as the reference standard, this study evaluated the sensitivity, specificity and kappa statistic of gross pathology (abattoir postmortem inspection), histopathology, and parallel or series combinations of the two for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in 430 elk and red deer. Two histopathology interpretations were evaluated: histopathology I, where the presence of lesions compatible with tuberculosis was considered positive, and histopathology II, where lesions compatible with tuberculosis or a select group of additional possible diagnoses were considered positive. In the 73 animals from which M. bovis was isolated, gross lesions of tuberculosis were most often in …

Nietzschean Genealogy And Hegelian History In The Genealogy Of Morals, Philip J. Kain Mar 1996

Nietzschean Genealogy And Hegelian History In The Genealogy Of Morals, Philip J. Kain

Philosophy

I would like to offer an interpretation of the Genealogy of Morals, of the relationship of master morality to slave morality, and of Nietzsche's philosophy of history that is different from the interpretation that is normally offered by Nietzsche scholars. Contrary to Nehamas, Deleuze, Danto, and many others, I wish to argue that Nietzsche does not simply embrace master morality and spurn slave morality.1 I also wish to reject the view, considered simply obvious by most scholars, that the iibermensch develops out of, or on the model of, the master, not the slave.2 And to make the case for all …

One Bite At The Apple: Reversals Of Convictions Tainted By Prosecutorial Misconduct And The Ban On Double Jeopardy, Rick A. Bierschbach Mar 1996

One Bite At The Apple: Reversals Of Convictions Tainted By Prosecutorial Misconduct And The Ban On Double Jeopardy, Rick A. Bierschbach

Michigan Law Review

This Note argues that the Double Jeopardy Clause bars retrial after reversals of convictions tainted by prosecutorial misconduct in the submission of evidence when two conditions are met: (1) the prosecutor intentionally introduced tainted evidence, and (2) excluding the tainted evidence would have left insufficient evidence at trial to support the defendant's conviction. This Note contends that this limited extension of double jeopardy protection is both mandated by the policies underlying the Double Jeopardy Clause and consistent with existing double jeopardy jurisprudence.
