Suburban Sprawl Or Suburban Villages? Defining Planning Principles For New Land Development In Indonesia, Stephen Day Mar 1996

Suburban Sprawl Or Suburban Villages? Defining Planning Principles For New Land Development In Indonesia, Stephen Day

Washington International Law Journal

Indonesian land use regulations are increasingly designating areas where urban growth is either targeted or excluded, echoing a similar trend in other Pacific Rim nations. Yet as with growth planning in the United States, there is a near total lack of regulatory direction guiding the form or pattern of urban development within the target areas. Sprawling suburban development, essentially patterned after midcentury-style American models, is rapidly consuming the most desirable developable land. Although significant policy goals and legislation are emerging that may provide the basis for suburban land planning principles, neither the central nor provincial governments have consistently articulated such …

Tallgrass Prairie Vegetation Response To Spring Burning Dates, Fertilizer, And Atrazine, Robert B. Mitchell, Robert A. Masters, Steven S. Waller, Kenneth Moore, Linda J. Young Mar 1996

Tallgrass Prairie Vegetation Response To Spring Burning Dates, Fertilizer, And Atrazine, Robert B. Mitchell, Robert A. Masters, Steven S. Waller, Kenneth Moore, Linda J. Young

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Tallgrass prairies provide an important source of hay and summer forage in eastern Nebraska. A study was conducted in 1989 and 1990 on 2 late seral tallgrass prairies near Lincoln and Virginia, Nebraska to determine if production of selected components of tallgrass prairie communities could be altered by burning (not burned, or burned in either early, mid-, or late spring) and applying fertilizer (0 and 67-23 kg N-P ha-1) and atrazine [6- chloro-N-ethyl-N'-(1-methylethyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine] (0 and 2.2 kg a.i. ha-1). Vegetation was harvested the year treatments were applied at about 30-day intervals starting in June and ending …

This report includes accounts submitted in late 1991 as well as all records submitted during the calendar years of 1992 and 1993, covering records with accession numbers 295-358. All records mentioned …

Notes On Bird Sightings In Nebraska

Nebraska Bird Review

Ross' Goose. A single bird came to Heartwell Lake (in the Hastings area) in mid-December 1995 and has been here up to now (4 April 1996). It is not injured and flies well, but it has chosen to stay because Hastings uses a device to keep the water open. I threw food out especially to the little goose because the larger domestic ducks chase it away. It is so used to me by now that it will come to within 12-15 feet of me. I walk to the lake nearly every day, and the wild Mallards, Lesser Scaups, Ringnecked …

Winter Field Report, December-February 1995-96, W. Ross Silcock

Nebraska Bird Review

As far as the birds are concerned, this was an uneventful winter, with only a few rarities. Highlights include the second pile-up of rare gulls at L. McConaughy, and a Common Redpoll influx. Best of the rarities (all subject to Records committee scrutiny and pending its acceptance) were a 5th record Red-necked Grebe at L. McConaughy; a first-record Mew Gull at L. McConaughy; Iceland, Lesser Black-backed, and Great Black-backed Gulls at L. McConaughy; a Cassin’s Finch at Crawford; White-winged Crossbills at Norfolk and North Platte; and a Hoary Redpoll at Wakefield. Out-of-season reports were record-early Blue-winged Teal in Dixon Co, …

El Género Diastolinus (Coléoptera: Tenebrionidae: Pedinini) En Las Islas Caimán Con Descripción De Una Nueva Especie, Orlando H. Garrido, Esteban Gutierrez

Insecta Mundi

A new species of Diastolinus, D. burtoni is described for the islands of Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac (Cayman Islands). Local forms are characterized by displaying a conspicuous enlargement of the front tibia, character not found in any Cuban species. However, Diastolirius dentipes (endemic to Grand Cayman) was also collected in Cayo Largo del Sur, Archipelago de Los Canarreos, Cuba. Therefore this species, could no longer be considered endemic to the Cayman Islands. Whether the original dispersion occurred from Cayman Island to Cayo Largo or vice versa, is hard to prove, nevertheless, the distinctive character of the dilatation of the …

Book Review: The Encyclopedia Of Land Invertebrate Behavior (Rod And Ken Preston-Mafham), Thomas J. Walker Mar 1996

Book Review: The Encyclopedia Of Land Invertebrate Behavior (Rod And Ken Preston-Mafham), Thomas J. Walker

Insecta Mundi

Any book that purports to be an encyclopedic treatment of the behavior of insects, arachnids, myriapods, and terrestrial representatives of other invertebrate phyla invites skepticism. That made it all the more pleasing to find this book to be remarkably comprehensive and scholarly. Adding to this pleasure were more than 200 full-color, original photographs of live invertebrates doing what land animals do and about 40 line illustrations redrawn from the primary literature.

First Record Of Glaucous-Winged Gull For Nebraska, Don Roberson, Rita Carratello Mar 1996

First Record Of Glaucous-Winged Gull For Nebraska, Don Roberson, Rita Carratello

Nebraska Bird Review

During Easter vacation in 1995, we visited the Western Great Plains in search of dancing prairie-chickens and grouse. We started in southeastern Colorado and planned on driving to the Bessey Division, Nebraska National Forest, where we had reservations at photo blinds. But at dawn on 10 April, a huge blizzard began howling and worsened during the drive through Kansas. By the time we reached western Nebraska, our excursion stalled at Ogallala when interstate 80 was closed due to high winds and snow. It was becoming apparent that we would not make it to our planned destination.
