Lethal Limits And Sublethal Effects Of Hypoxia On The Amphipod Gammarus Pseudolimnaeus, W. Wyatt Hoback, M. Christopher Barnhart
Lethal Limits And Sublethal Effects Of Hypoxia On The Amphipod Gammarus Pseudolimnaeus, W. Wyatt Hoback, M. Christopher Barnhart
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
The amphipod Gammarus pseudolimnaeus is an important prey species for trout in certain tailwater fisheries below hydropower dams. The effects of low dissolved oxygen (DO) on this species were investigated in laboratory experiments. The duration of survival in anoxia and in lethally low DO concentrations differed among adult female, adult male, and juvenile individuals. Adult females were the group most sensitive to both anoxia and hypoxia; for example, LC50 in hypoxia was 2.00, 1.28, and 1.05 mg/L, respectively, for females, males and juveniles (48 h, 15°C). Juveniles were generally less sensitive to hypoxia but more sensitive to anoxia than were …

Cultural Values Lower Redwood Creek, Susie Van Kirk
Cultural Values Lower Redwood Creek, Susie Van Kirk
Susie Van Kirk Papers
Levee construction on lower Redwood Creek from near its mouth to the mouth of Prairie Creek was completed by the Corps of Engineers in 1968, resulting in significant impairment of the estuary's hydrology and its biological functions. In an effort to reestablish those functions and more particularly the fisheries of the creek, Redwood National and State Parks is developing a plan for estuary management. The following general statement about cultural values in the project area and vicinity was prepared to expand the historical information in the draft plan.

Bad Ethics, Good Ethics And The Genetic Engineering Of Animals In Agriculture, Bernard Rollin
Bad Ethics, Good Ethics And The Genetic Engineering Of Animals In Agriculture, Bernard Rollin
Genetics Collection
Genetic engineers have been remiss in addressing ethical and social issues emerging from this powerful new technology, a technology whose implications for agriculture are profound. As a consequence of this failure, society has been uneasy about genetic engineering of animals and has had difficulty distinguishing between genuine and spurious ethical issues the technology occasions. Many of the most prominent concerns do not require a serious response. On the other hand, concerns about a variety of possible risks arising from genetic engineering of animals require careful consideration and dialogue with the public. Such concerns are an admixture of ethics and prudence. …

Fishermen's Views On The Future Management Of The Rock Lobster Fishery: A Report Prepared On Behalf Of The Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee, The Marketing Centre, Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee
Fisheries Management Papers
In June 1995, a self-completion survey of fishermen in the rock lobster fishery was sent out by The Marketing Centre to 589 licensees. A total of 206 valid responses were received. The questionnaire was fairly long and dealt with a number of complex issues. As such, this response rate of 36.0% compares favorably with the average for postal surveys of around 40.0%. The following represents the main findings from the survey.

You have come from throughout California, from across the United States, and from many corners of the world to gather here for the purpose of sharing information, expertise, and wisdom in dealing with vertebrate pest problems. Our common purpose is to find yet better methods for preventing and resolving situations in which wildlife comes into conflict with humans. The Conference's mission remains one of education. We learn from each other, and we strive to find better ways of applying our knowledge to real-world problems.
