Lee Udall Bennion: A Quiet Interview, Doris R. Dant Apr 1996

Lee Udall Bennion: A Quiet Interview, Doris R. Dant

BYU Studies

Typical of the way artist Lee Bennion interweaves her family life and her work are the setting and events of the morning of this interview. When I arrived at her Spring City, Utah, home on September 23, 1996, Lee was canning tomatoes from her garden. She seated me at her dining room table for the interview, but her husband, Joe, came in to eat, and Adah, her youngest daughter, asked to have her hair braided. Unflustered by the interruptions, Lee simply offered me a slice of homemade bread and met her family's needs before returning to the business of the …

On Being Mormon In Canada And Canadian In Utah, Maureen Ursenbach Beecher

BYU Studies

Peter Gzowski, a name unpronouncable to Americans, is a byword to Canadians. Weekday mornings, CBC radio listeners hear his wry comments and sage interviews reflecting Canadian life on Morningside. In the mid-seventies, when Morningside was still This Country in the Morning, Gzowski ran a contest asking listeners to finish this sentence: "As Canadian as..." Entries poured in: "As Canadian as a toboggan" or "As Canadian as Diefenbaker." But the grand-slam winner was unforgettable: "As Canadian as possible, under the circumstances."

The Structural Gene Encoding Human Enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli Pcfo20 Is Homologous To That For Porcine 987p, Gloria Inés Viboud, Gunhild Jonson, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, Ann-Mari Svennerholm

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Putative colonization factor PCFO20 was recently identified in an enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strain of serogroup O20 isolated from a child with diarrhea in Argentina. The gene encoding the structural subunit of PCFO20 fimbriae, fotA, was cloned from strain ARG-2 in the expression phage vector lambda ZAP Express. One positive clone, pGV29, that carried a 3.3-kb fragment was identified on the basis of fimbrillin production by using a monospecific rabbit anti-PCFO20 serum. Nucleotide sequencing of a 1.3-kb Sau3A-ClaI fragment of the subclone pGV292 containing the region coding for PCFO20 fimbrillin revealed two open reading frames of …

Florida's Troubled Phosphate Companies: Can Bankruptcy Law Be Used To Relieve Their Obligation To Reclaim The Land?, Mary Jane Angelo Apr 1996

Florida's Troubled Phosphate Companies: Can Bankruptcy Law Be Used To Relieve Their Obligation To Reclaim The Land?, Mary Jane Angelo

UF Law Faculty Publications

The conflict that brings us here arises when the earth is disturbed and the environment in which we live is threatened. . . . On the one hand are the corporations who mine phosphate reserves in Florida—their intentions are based on the argument that an ever-shrinking agrarian base in America must have fertilizer to remain effective and productive. On the other hand are the individuals and groups who oppose that mining and their argument is based upon the contention that such mining is too destructive of a unique and very fragile ecosystem.

By the year 2000, phosphate companies will have …

Globalization: An Analytical Framework, Gordon R. Walker, Mark A. Fox Apr 1996

Globalization: An Analytical Framework, Gordon R. Walker, Mark A. Fox

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

The paradigm example of globalization is the global integration

of financial markets. Globalization has significant implications for

New Zealand--a small island nation far from the centers of world

capital--that flow from the particular characteristics of New

Zealand's economy. In order to sustain current levels of economic

growth, the New Zealand government has adopted a liberal policy to

attractf oreign capital. In the future, a major taskf or New Zealand is

to align further the internal logic of the deregulatory process as

expressed in domestic legislation with an international environment

in which domestic economies are more globally integrated. This

article argues …

A Study Of The Chemical And Physical Interactions Between A Wetland And A Shallow Aquifer In Cass County, Michigan, Lisa Marie Anderson Apr 1996

A Study Of The Chemical And Physical Interactions Between A Wetland And A Shallow Aquifer In Cass County, Michigan, Lisa Marie Anderson

Masters Theses

A study of the ground-water chemistry and flow direction adjacent to a wetland was performed in a major hog producing area. Nested piezometers, consisting of wells 7 to 18 feet deep, were installed around the wetland to determine the vertical distribution of hydraulic head and water-quality parameters. Piezometer elevations were surveyed to determine precise ground-water elevations to delineate the ground-water flow regime around the wetland. Water samples were taken at three different times to analyze water quality and seasonal variations. Analytical parameters included major ions, redox sensitive parameters (DO, nitrate-N, ammonia, iron, and sulfate), and total organic carbon.

Water level …

Postpollination Mechanisms Influencing Mating Patterns And Fecundity: An Example From Eichhornia Paniculata, Mitchell B. Cruzan Apr 1996

Postpollination Mechanisms Influencing Mating Patterns And Fecundity: An Example From Eichhornia Paniculata, Mitchell B. Cruzan

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Plant mating systems are influenced by the amount and genetic composition of pollen grains deposited on stigmas and by the ability of recipients to discriminate among pollen from different sources. We describe an experimental procedure that uses limiting and excess pollinations with mixtures of genetically marked pollen to partition the siring success of donors into three components: prefertilization gamete attrition (failure of male gametophytes before fertilization), pollen competitive ability (differences in pollen tube growth rate), and postfertilization gamete attrition (embryo abortion). Regression models for the relationships of pollen load size with each pollen's siring success and total recipient fecundity indicate …
