Coordinate Cell Cycle Control Of A Caulobacter Dna Methyltransferase And The Flagellar Genetic Hierarchy, Craig Stephens, Gary Zweiger, Lucy Shapiro
Coordinate Cell Cycle Control Of A Caulobacter Dna Methyltransferase And The Flagellar Genetic Hierarchy, Craig Stephens, Gary Zweiger, Lucy Shapiro
Biology
The expression of the Caulobacter ccrM gene and the activity of its product, the M.Ccr II DNA methyltransferase, are limited to a discrete portion of the cell cycle (G. Zweiger, G. Marczynski, and L. Shapiro, J. Mol. Biol. 235:472-485, 1994). Temporal control of DNA methylation has been shown to be critical for normal development in the dimorphic Caulobacter life cycle. To understand the mechanism by which ccrM expression is regulated during the cell cycle, we have identified and characterized the ccrM promoter region. We have found that it belongs to an unusual promoter family used by several Caulobacter class II …

Caught In The Net Of Copyright, Peter Jaszi
Caught In The Net Of Copyright, Peter Jaszi
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
As an overture to this Comment, I'd like to begin with one of my favorite passages from the recent National Information Infrastructure (NII)Task Force Working Group Report on Intellectual Property and the NII-the so-called White Paper.' The passage is not one of the deceptively bland legislative proposals-nor one of the strategic half-truths in the purported summary of current copyright law. Rather, it is a passage from the section on copyright awareness, and it is an excellent example of a good idea gone wrong. The good idea is that our elementary and secondary schools could take a role in preparing students …
A. Lincoln, A Corporate Attorney And The Illinois Central Railroad, Sandra K. Lueckenhoff
A. Lincoln, A Corporate Attorney And The Illinois Central Railroad, Sandra K. Lueckenhoff
Missouri Law Review
The Illinois Central Railroad, one of the largest Illinois corporations, retained Abraham Lincoln as counsel in the early 1850s. To place Lincoln's corporate law career in context, one must first understand the state of corporate law, the types of corporations in existence, and the typical corporate law practice in the 1850s. The discussion is divided into several sections. Part II examines Lincoln's legal background: his education, admittance to the bar, law partners, office arrangements, and his general reputation in the legal community. Part III outlines the status and changes in corporate law in the mid-nineteenth century. Part IV chronicles the …

Aristotle On Civic Friendship, Robert Mayhew
Aristotle On Civic Friendship, Robert Mayhew
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
Aristotle offers us no sustained account of civic friendship (πολιτική φιλία), only remarks scattered throughout the Nicomachean Ethics and Eudemian Ethics. In this paper I hope to make clear what his views on civic friendship are.
Citizens will feel affection for one another due to the mutual benefit they receive from living together in a city. They agree about what is advantageous for the city: who should rule, how the city should be run, etc.; and to the extent that they care about the common good, they all have one aim. In addition, the affection a citizen feels for his …
