Selecting Wilderness Areas To Conserve Utah's Biological Diversity, Diane W. Davidson, William D. Newmark, Jack W. Sites Jr., Dennis K. Shiozawa, Eric A. Rickart, Kimball T. Harper, Robert B. Keiter
Great Basin Naturalist
Congress is currently evaluating the wilderness status of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) public lands in Utah. Wilderness areas play many important roles, and one critical role is the conservation of biological diversity. We propose that objectives for conserving biodiversity on BLM lands in Utah be to (1) ensure the long-term population viability of native animal and plant species, (2) maintain the critical ecological and evolutionary processes upon which these species depend, and (3) preserve the full range of communities, successional stages, and environmental gradients. To achieve these objectives, wilderness areas should be selected so as to protect large, contiguous …

Pogonomyrmex Owyheei Nest Site Density And Size On A Minimally Impacted Site In Central Oregon, Peter T. Soulé, Paul A. Knapp
Great Basin Naturalist
Little is known about the basic characteristics of the western harvester ant (Pogonomyrmex owyheei) in the absence of anthropogenic disturbances. We examined the role of P. owyheei as an agent of disturbance in an area of semiarid vegetation in central Oregon known as the Horse Ridge Research Natural Area (HRRNA) that has been largely free of livestock grazing and other significant anthropogenic influences for over 23 yr. We determined density and size characteristics of nest sites and estimate total area cleared by P. owyheei activities on HRRNA. From random sampling of twenty-five 0.04-ha plots we found a mean …

Reversal Of Cell Fate Determination In Caenorhabditis Elegans Vulval Development, Susan Euling, Victor Ambros
Reversal Of Cell Fate Determination In Caenorhabditis Elegans Vulval Development, Susan Euling, Victor Ambros
Dartmouth Scholarship
In Caenorhabditis elegans, the fates of the multipotent vulval precursor cells (VPCs) are specified by intercellular signals, The VPCs divide in the third larval stage (L3) of the wild type, producing progeny of determined cell types, In lin-28 mutants, vulva development is similar to wild-type vulva development except that it occurs precociously, in the second larval stage (L2), Consequently, when lin-28 hermaphrodites temporarily arrest development at the end of L2 in the dauer larva stage, these otherwise determined VPC progeny become reprogrammed back to the multipotent, signal- sensitive state of VPCs. Our results indicate that VPC fate determination by intercellular …

Aristotle And Chrysippus On The Physiology Of Human Action, Priscilla Sakezles
Aristotle And Chrysippus On The Physiology Of Human Action, Priscilla Sakezles
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
The early Stoics do not seem to have physiological theories about the workings of the human body. This is not surprising in light of Chrysippus' admission, reported by Galen, of his ignorance of anatomy. Yet a physiological theory explaining the mechanics of how the body moves in response to the soul's desires can be reconstructed from a handful of neglected fragments. Interestingly, the revealed theory is nearly identical to Aristotle's explanation in On the Motion of Animals of "how the soul moves the body in voluntary motion" (700bl0 and 703b3). In this paper I reconstruct the Stoic theory, and argue …

Nepsilon-(Carboxymethyl)lysine (CML) is an advanced glycation end product formed on protein by combined nonenzymatic glycation and oxidation (glycoxidation) reactions. We now report that CML is also formed during metal-catalyzed oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the presence of protein. During copper-catalyzed oxidation in vitro, the CML content of low density lipoprotein increased in concert with conjugated dienes but was independent of the presence of the Amadori compound, fructoselysine, on the protein. CML was also formed in a time-dependent manner in RNase incubated under aerobic conditions in phosphate buffer containing arachidonate or linoleate; only trace amounts of CML were formed from …

A History Of Transportation In Nineteenth Century Umatilla County, Oregon, Gary Kenneth Miller
A History Of Transportation In Nineteenth Century Umatilla County, Oregon, Gary Kenneth Miller
Dissertations and Theses
An examination of the history of transportation in Umatilla County, Oregon, will provide an understanding of its role in the colonization and economic development of this remote and arid region. This study begins with a description of the movement of Umatilla, Walla Walla, and Cayuse Indians in the Umatilla Country to establish the patterns of transportation at the beginning of the nineteenth century. From this basis, significant changes in transportation technology and patterns of movement can be identified and analyzed.
Primary sources are reviewed to establish existing routes and conditions of travel. Immigrant accounts and pioneer reminiscences reveal that difficulties …

Rats In Bliss: A Minimal-Deviation Model Of Ratio Schedule Performance, Jennifer Bredthauer '96
Rats In Bliss: A Minimal-Deviation Model Of Ratio Schedule Performance, Jennifer Bredthauer '96
Honors Projects
The minimum-deviation theory predicts that an organism will seek to minimize the behavioral distance between an unconstrained baseline and constrained conditions caused by reinforcement schedules (Staddon, 1979). According to the performance model proposed by Allison (1983), behavior under scheduled constraint will come as close as possible to an unconstrained "bliss point" or behavioral ideal. The present study examined applications of these models to fixed ratio (FR) schedules. Six rats were first exposed to a paired baseline procedure to establish their individual bliss points. Each rat was then exposed to a series of two fixed ratio schedules: FR 2 and FR …
