Paper Session Ii-B - Research Plans For The International Space Station, William P. Gilbreath
Paper Session Ii-B - Research Plans For The International Space Station, William P. Gilbreath
Space Congress® Proceedings
The International Space Station, now under construction by all of the leading space-faring countries around the world, will provide a tremendous asset to the international research community. It will not only enhance and broaden present research objectives, but also enable new research initiatives only achievable on such a well-equipped platform. NASA is working with the international research community to develop a coordinated plan for on-board research. The International Space Station research platform will provide an excellent sustained low gravity environment for laboratory research, as well as a robust long-term platform for observational research. Studies in fundamental physical, chemical, and biological …

Immunolesions Using Site Specific Injections Of 192-Lgg Saporin Into The Basal Forebrain Fail To Affect Radial Arm Maze Performance In The Male Rat, Lesley J. Hickman '96
Honors Projects
In this study I investigated the effects of 192-lgG saporin injections into the medial septal area.(MSA) and nucleus basalis magnocel/ularis (NBM) on radial arm maze performance in the male rat. The results of the present study reveal that combined injections of 192-lgG saporin into the basal forebrain failed to disrupt RAM performance when compared to vehicle-injected controls. In addition, intraperitoneal injections using a muscarinic receptor blocker, scopolamine, failed to reveal a compensatory response of the cholinergic basal forebrain that may have explained the lack of behavioral effects of 192IgG saporin. Consequently, the results of this study suggest that a selective …

Paper Session I-C - An Update On Zero Gravity Effects On Human Space Flight And A Progress Report On Artificial Gravity Experiments, James H. Mulberry
Space Congress® Proceedings
The future commercialization of space will require increased human presence. This is due to the risk and complexity associated with the manufacture, assembly, operation, maintenance and modification of facilities in space. This human element is a natural outgrowth from the discovery and exploration stages to the habitation phase of space. However, for mankind to be successful in this endeavor, we must build space vehicles and facilities that reflect our “natural” earth environment - when possible. One of those critical environmental factors is gravity and its associated role in the health, orientation and mobility of living organisms. International space flight experience …

The Construction Of Effective Cooperative Learning Groups For Successful High School Biology Instruction, Diana I. Probasco
The Construction Of Effective Cooperative Learning Groups For Successful High School Biology Instruction, Diana I. Probasco
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this project was to determine the effect of balancing learning styles in the construction of cooperative learning groups. The investigation attempted to determine if science instruction and subsequent achievement can be enhanced by establishing effective cooperative learning groups. The Learning Style Inventory was used to determine learning styles. Then groups were formed based on either construction of balanced or unbalanced cooperative learning groups. Students then completed group activities as contained in the Celebrate Immunity Team Pack. Pretests and posttests were administered in order to measure cognitive gains. A statistical analysis of the results of the groups showed …

Evaluation Of Propane Exploders As White-Tailed Deer Deterrents, J. L. Belant, T. W. Seamans, C.P. Dwyer
Evaluation Of Propane Exploders As White-Tailed Deer Deterrents, J. L. Belant, T. W. Seamans, C.P. Dwyer
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
In response to increased white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) depredation of agricultural crops and encroachment on airports, we evaluated the effectiveness of systematic and motion-activated propane exploders as deer frightening devices. We conducted three experiments in a 2200 ha fenced facility in northern Ohio with high (91/km2) deer densities during 1994-1995. Systematic exploders were calibrated to detonate once at 8 to 10 min intervals, whereas motion-activated exploders detonated 8 times/deer intrusion. Systematic propane exploders were generally ineffective, deterring deer from corn for <2 days only, whereas motion-activated exploders repelled deer for O-6 weeks. Repellency of motion-activated exploders varied seasonally, possibly in response to variations in deer density, availability of alternate food, or reproductive and social behavior. We recommend motion-activated exploders over systematic exploders as deer frightening devices for crop damage mitigation and on airports; however, systematic exploders may have utility for short-term (a few days) use.
