Museum Of Formosan Aborigines, Yuan-Feng Cheng May 1996

Museum Of Formosan Aborigines, Yuan-Feng Cheng

Theses

In the beginning, the purpose of this thesis was to explore the feasibility of creating a computer-based visual museum. I wanted to experiment with 3-D interactivity, such as how to set up the cursor movement in a 3-D world and how to use 3-D animation in interactive multimedia. I wanted to use Native Americans as the subject of this 3-D museum project. After I sent my thesis proposal to our department, I found my classmate's project was about Native Americans also. Therefore, I decided on another topic. In July 1995, 1 went back to Taiwan to visit my friends. I …

Organic Matter Characterization Of Virginia Rivers And Reservoirs, Susanne Margaret Lockhart May 1996

Organic Matter Characterization Of Virginia Rivers And Reservoirs, Susanne Margaret Lockhart

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Research was conducted on characterizing the DOC characteristics and to discern whether spatial and temporal variations exist in these characteristics as impacted by seasonal, hydrologic or other factors. Data was cumulative of two studies: the State-Wide Survey in which water samples were taken in March and July 1995 from surface waters in four physiographic regions of Virginia and the James River Peninsula Survey concentrating on reservoirs and rivers on the James River Peninsula.

Results illustrate that the two largest fractions of DOC were the hydrophilic and hydrophobic acid fractions. An increase in DOC was observed between the mountains and the …

The Origins Of The Law Of Slavery In British North America, William M. Wiecek May 1996

The Origins Of The Law Of Slavery In British North America, William M. Wiecek

Cardozo Law Review

In American experience, slavery originally appeared as a response to economic need. Subsequently, racism emerged as a justification for slavery, required as a response to the inherent contradictions of slavery. First there was slavery, then racism, then a fatal fusion of the two.

The Effects Of Positive Action And The Sexual Abuse Prevention Program On Sexually Abused Students' Behavior, Social Skills, And Self-Esteem, Paul W. Houser

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to examine the effects of the Positive Action Program and the Sexual Abuse Prevention Program on sexually abused students' behavior, social skills, and self-esteem. Four classrooms of multiple handicapped elementary aged students in Burlington County Special Services District were selected, giving a sample of forty-four. Each week pupils received four lessons, for twenty minutes each, of instruction in the two programs. Prior to program implementation in the Fall and again in the Spring students rated their social skills development, behavior problems, and self-esteem.

Results indicated that the programs in the course of only a six month …

Nutrient Distribution In Quercus Gambelii Stands In Central Utah, A. R. Tiedemann, W. P. Clary Apr 1996

Nutrient Distribution In Quercus Gambelii Stands In Central Utah, A. R. Tiedemann, W. P. Clary

Great Basin Naturalist

Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii Nutt.) is increasingly recognized as a valuable fuelwood throughout Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. Knowledge of distribution of nutrients among biotic and abiotic components is an important step in developing prescriptions for managing these stands for sustainable productivity.

Eight Q. gambelii stands were sampled for concentrations (%) and accumulations (kg ha−1) of total nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), and sodium (Na) among aboveground and belowground biomass components and the upper 30 cm of soil. Highest concentrations of N, P, and S occurred in oak leaves, …

Trypanoplasma Atraria Sp. N. (Kinetoplastida: Bodonidae) In Fishes From The Sevier River Drainage, Utah, J. Stephen Cranney, Richard A. Heckmann

Great Basin Naturalist

A total of 181 fishes belonging to 10 species were captured near Richfield, Utah, and examined for parasites. A new species of hemoflagellate, Trypanoplasma atraria sp. n., was observed in 3 species: Utah chub (Gila atraria [Girard]), redside shiner (Richardsonius balteatus [Richardson]), and speckled dace (Rhinichthys osculus [Girard]). Seven other species of fishes examined in the study area were negative for T. atraria sp. n. The salmonid leech, Piscicola salmositica (Meyer), collected in the same area harbored developmental stages of Trypanoplasma, suggesting a possible leech vector for the hemoflagellate. Characteristics of Trypanoplasma atraria sp. n. place …

Effects Of Douglas-Fir Foliage Age Class On Western Spruce Budworm Oviposition Choice And Larval Performance, Kimberly A. Dodds, Karen M. Clancy, Kathryn J. Leyva, David Greenberg, Peter W. Price Apr 1996

Effects Of Douglas-Fir Foliage Age Class On Western Spruce Budworm Oviposition Choice And Larval Performance, Kimberly A. Dodds, Karen M. Clancy, Kathryn J. Leyva, David Greenberg, Peter W. Price

Great Basin Naturalist

The western spruce budworm (Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman) prefers to feed on flushing buds and current-year needles of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco). Budworm larvae will not typically consume older age classes of needles unless all current-year foliage is depleted. We tested the following null hypotheses: (1) budworm larvae can feed on foliage with a wide range of qualities (i.e., current 1-, 2-, or 3-year-old needles) without measurable effects on fitness; and (2) budworm adults do not show any oviposition preference linked to the age of the foliage they fed on as larvae. We used both laboratory and field …
