A Molecular Analysis Of An Octopamine Receptor Gene In Drosophila Melanogaster., Pramodini Purushottam Rode May 1996

A Molecular Analysis Of An Octopamine Receptor Gene In Drosophila Melanogaster., Pramodini Purushottam Rode

Student Work

Octopamine is a biogenic amine. It plays an important role as neurohormone neuromodulator and neurotransmitter in Drosophila melanogaster. These physiological functions of octopamine are essential in feeding, mating and fight-or-flight behavior. Octopamine receptors are structurally and fundamentally similar to the vertebrate adrenergic receptors. A Drosophila gene encoding an octopamine/tyramine receptor was previously identified by probing a Drosophila genomic library with a human brain β2 adrenergic receptor cDNA clone. After identifying a 367-bp fragment of a Drosophila genomic DNA, a cDNA library prepared from head mRNA was screened and a 3.3 kb cDNA, containing the inferred protein coding region of the …

Statistical Comparison And Evaluation Of Analytical Techniques For Measurement Of Trace Elements In Coal, Catherine A. O'Keefe May 1996

Statistical Comparison And Evaluation Of Analytical Techniques For Measurement Of Trace Elements In Coal, Catherine A. O'Keefe

Theses and Dissertations

Rapid technological advances in industry, transportation, energy production, and agriculture have resulted in increased environmental pollution of toxic materials. Following the passage of federal pollution regulations beginning with the first Clean Air Act Amendments in 1977, industry has become more aware of the environmental consequences of these technological advances. In recent years, there has been an increased effort to improve the quality of life by minimizing pollution on a global scale.

The utilization of fossil fuels is one source of toxic materials in the environment. A necessary step to understanding the emissions of toxic metals from combustion and gasification of …

The Slavery Of Emancipation, Guyora Binder May 1996

The Slavery Of Emancipation, Guyora Binder

Journal Articles

The Thirteenth Amendment abolishes the institution of slavery rather than freeing individual slaves. Yet it quickly came to stand for little more than granting universal rights to make labor contracts and to leave service. This article develops a distinction between abolishing an institution and reclassifying individuals within it. Drawing on the comparative history of slavery, it shows that the institution of slavery has generally included mechanisms for the manumission of slaves and their passage into a liminal status combining self-ownership with social subordination and relative isolation. A critical account of the Antelope litigation shows that proponents of mass manumission still …

Feedstock Identification Methodology For The Selection Of Used Lubricating Oils For Rerefining, Carolyn Jane Rushforth May 1996

Feedstock Identification Methodology For The Selection Of Used Lubricating Oils For Rerefining, Carolyn Jane Rushforth

Master's Projects

In order to produce a high quality product, the rerefiner must select paraffinically-based used oil feedstocks of sufficient quality to allow processing without damage to refinery equipment and to allow the production of a base oil that meets the desired specifications. Consequently, this presents a tremendous challenge to the rerefiner due to the varied uses and compositions of used oil that the rerefiner may encounter. Complicating the selection even further is the contamination of oil during post-use management, the fact that the used oil is collected from thousands of generators, and that no cost and time effective method exists for …

Societal Cost Methodology, Neelam Ghuliani May 1996

Societal Cost Methodology, Neelam Ghuliani

Master's Projects

Life Cycle Analysis is a process employed in the evolution of systems from the time of need identification to the time of deployment of the system for use. This thesis project developed a societal cost approach to life cycle analysis, including the new design approach, and cost models. Societal Cost Methodology is a total life cycle analysis and costing that includes not only the acquisition and ownership cost but also the environmental, ecological, disposal, and societal costs. This methodology emphasizes that environmental and societal impacts should be considered in the early design stage so that product or system can be …

Genetic And Biochemical Characterization Of Drosophila Singed, A Homolog Of The Actin Bundling Protein Fascin, Kelly Cant May 1996

Genetic And Biochemical Characterization Of Drosophila Singed, A Homolog Of The Actin Bundling Protein Fascin, Kelly Cant

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Drosophila singed mutants were named for their gnarled bristle phenotype, however, severe alleles are also female sterile due to a defect in nurse cell cytoplasm transport. Recently, singed protein was shown to have 35% peptide identity with the actin bundling protein fascin. I present evidence that singed is a homolog of fascin. In vivo, singed is required for actin filament bundle formation in the cytoplasm of nurse cells during oogenesis and in the cellular extension that forms a bristle. In vitro, purified bacterially-expressed singed bundles actin filaments with the same 12 nm periodicity and stoichiometry reported for sea urchin fascin. While …

Second Growth Forest As Potential Marten Habitat In Western Newfoundland: An Examination Of Forest Habitat Structure And Microtine Abundance, Brian R. Sturtevant May 1996

Second Growth Forest As Potential Marten Habitat In Western Newfoundland: An Examination Of Forest Habitat Structure And Microtine Abundance, Brian R. Sturtevant

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The American marten (Martes americana) is associated with large tracts of relatively undisturbed, mature coniferous forests. I examined coarse woody debris (CWD) structure and small mammal abundance with respect to forest age and stem structure within second-growth forests, in comparison with old-growth stands in western Newfoundland. Results suggest that a critical change in marten habitat quality may occur at stand senescence, due to decreased tree competition, more complex subcanopy structure, and increased meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus) abundance.

Analysis of stem structure within a chronosequence of 19 second-growth stands indicated high intertree competition, with dense canopy closure …

Ecological Amplitude And Invasion Of Diffuse Knapweed At Yakima Training Center, Washington, Donna Denise Wilcox May 1996

Ecological Amplitude And Invasion Of Diffuse Knapweed At Yakima Training Center, Washington, Donna Denise Wilcox

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Diffuse knapweed (Centaurea diffusa) is an introduced annual or short-lived perennial from Eurasia that has become a threat to native rangelands in the Pacific Northwest. Military training activities on the Yakima Training Center (YTC) increase the likelihood that knapweed will expand its range at YTC. This study, conducted in a major watershed at YTC, focused on: 1) how a variety of environmental variables influences knapweed distribution, 2) the use of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery to map existing knapweed populations, and 3) the use of a logistic regression model and geographical information systems (GIS) to create a potential …

Removal Of Extracellular Chloride Suppresses Transmitter Release From Photoreceptor Terminals In The Mudpuppy Retina., Wallace B. Thoreson, R . F. Miller May 1996

Removal Of Extracellular Chloride Suppresses Transmitter Release From Photoreceptor Terminals In The Mudpuppy Retina., Wallace B. Thoreson, R . F. Miller

Journal Articles: Ophthalmology

Removal of extracellular Cl- has been shown to suppress light-evoked voltage responses of ON bipolar and horizontal cells, but not photoreceptors or OFF bipolar cells, in the amphibian retina. A substantial amount of experimental evidence has demonstrated that the photoreceptor transmitter, L-glutamate, activates cation, not Cl-, channels in these cells. The mechanism for Cl-free effects was therefore reexamined in a superfused retinal slice preparation from the mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus) using whole-cell voltage and current clamp techniques. In a Cl-free medium, light-evoked currents were maintained in rod and cone photoreceptors but suppressed in horizontal, ON bipolar, and OFF bipolar cells. Changes …

Nursing Faculty Connecting With Students: A Heideggerian Hermenteutical Study, Debra I. Craig Dnsc, Msn, Rn May 1996

Nursing Faculty Connecting With Students: A Heideggerian Hermenteutical Study, Debra I. Craig Dnsc, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

This study sought to gain an insight into the phenomenon of nursing faculty members connecting with students. Caring has been espoused as a key component of nursing education for many decades. In the last 10 years the terms caring and connecting are commonly found associated with each other, and yet there is no clear definition of connecting. It is important to understand a phenomenon from the point of view of those who are experiencing it. Therefore, a study which asked nursing educators to tell stories of the times they had connected with students was undertaken. Ten nurse educators in the …

The Efficiency Uptake And Analysis Of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid (Edta) In Wheat Plant Nutrient Solutions, Mohammed Adnane May 1996

The Efficiency Uptake And Analysis Of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid (Edta) In Wheat Plant Nutrient Solutions, Mohammed Adnane

Theses (Pre-2016)

A reversed-phase ion pair liquid chromatography method is developed to determine the total amount of EDTA in plant nutrient solutions. In this method, Fe(III) is used as a complex-forming metal with EDTA, and Tetrabutylamonium Bromide (ion-pairing agent) is used in the sodium acetate buffer pH 4.5 as a mobile phase. Ultraviolet detector was applied at 254 nm. The method is fast, 10 min per sample with a linear calibration curve within the range of 10 to 100 mM (correlation coefficient 0.999) . Applications to analysis of EDTA in wheat plant nutrient solutions. The study of the efficiency of EDTA in …

Behavioral Stress Modifies Hippocampal Plasticity Through N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor Activation, Jeansok J. Kim, Michael R. Foy, Richard F. Thompson May 1996

Behavioral Stress Modifies Hippocampal Plasticity Through N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor Activation, Jeansok J. Kim, Michael R. Foy, Richard F. Thompson

Psychological Science Faculty Works

Behavioral stress has detrimental effects on subsequent cognitive performance in many species, including humans. For example, humans exposed to stressful situations typically exhibit marked deficits in various learning and memory tasks. However, the underlying neural mechanisms by which stress exerts its effects on learning and memory are unknown. We now report that in adult male rats, stress (i.e., restraint plus tailshock) impairs long-term potentiation (LTP) but enhances long-term depression (LTD) in the CA1 area of the hippocampus, a structure implicated in learning and memory processes. These effects on LTP and LTD are prevented when the animals were given CGP39551 (the …

The Nutritional Status Of A Late Mississippian Population, Charlene Keck May 1996

The Nutritional Status Of A Late Mississippian Population, Charlene Keck

Southern Anthropologist

NUTRITIONAL INFERENCE FROM FAUNAE REMAINS AT THE PARKIN SITE. Parkin, a late Mississippian site in Arkansas, provides the opportunity, using archaeological evidence, to examine the nutritional status of a population which may have faced demographic collapse after the De Soto expedition of 1539-1543. Paleobotanical research by Williams shows Parkin conforms to generalized notions of maize-based agriculture. Human skeletal assessments by Murray show evidence of possible nutritional stress at Parkin. This study provides interpretive faunal analysis from a house floor excavated at Parkin. Integrating faunal, botanical, and human skeletal evidence provides a profile of nutritional adequacy and diversity. Nutritional stress was …
