A Three-Dimensional Model Of Pulsatile Flow At An Arterial Bifurcation, Andrew Hayes
A Three-Dimensional Model Of Pulsatile Flow At An Arterial Bifurcation, Andrew Hayes
Theses
Atherosclerosis in known to form at sites of predilection. These sites are typically areas of reduced pressure or shear stress. In the thesis a link between hemodynamics and atherosclerosis formation will be investigated. In the study three-dimensional pulsatile flow at a simplified carotid artery bifurcation has been modeled with computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A flow visualization experiment has also been performed on a glass replica of the bifurcation to verify the CFD results. An intense literature review has been included in the thesis to assimilate all of the published work in the area.
Spatial And Temporal Dynamics Of Plant Populations In Salt-Desert Shrub Vegetation Grazed By Sheep, Humberto Alzérreca-Angelo
Spatial And Temporal Dynamics Of Plant Populations In Salt-Desert Shrub Vegetation Grazed By Sheep, Humberto Alzérreca-Angelo
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
I studied the effect of moderate sheep grazing on a shadscale plant community at the Desert Experimental Range, southwestern Utah, USA, using a 61-yr data set with two grazing treatments (yes vs. no), two seasons (spring vs. winter), and two soil types (loamy-skeletal vs. coarse-loamy). I studied precipitation, total species cover, annuals, shrub survival, seedling recruitment, plant succession, and plant spatial relationships.
Precipitation showed high variability (CV=31%) masking on short-term cycles, resulting in study intervals with average (1935-58), dry (1958-69), driest (1969-75), and wet (1980-94[5]) regimes. Total cover in both grazed and ungrazed pastures increased between 1935 and 1975 before …

Prefabrication Of A Secondary Tram Flap., Geoffrey G. Hallock Md
Department of Surgery
A secondary TRAM flap was prefabricated in a rat model using the rectus muscle. The right rectus muscle was elevated as an inferiorly pedicled muscle flap in one experimental group (n = 6) and as a superiorly pedicled muscle flap in a second group (n = 5) and then sandwiched between a silicone sheet and the abdominal skin. Two weeks later, the abdominal skin and attached rectus muscle were elevated over the silicone sheet as a secondary TRAM flap. The surviving skin paddle areas of these prefabricated TRAM flaps were compared with superiorly (n = 7) and inferiorly (n = …

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
High School learning disabled students were taught prefix and suffix meanings from an adaption of Donald Dansereau's MURDER strategy in cooperative learning groups. Two groups participated in a two week long study, with only one group using the MURDER strategy. The results were measured with post-test scores in a Pearson product moment correlation matrix and indicated that there was no correlation between using the MURDER strategy and being taught with standardized worksheets. However, students who were engaged in the MURDER technique, scored higher on their post-tests than those who did not. In addition, the students scored higher between pretests and …

This document contains the findings and recommendations of the Technical Review and Evaluation Team (TRET) for the plume containment project at the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR). The findings and recommendations are in response to the 60 Percent Plume Containment Design, submitted by Operational Technologies (OpTech) in January 1996. In short, the TRET recommends the MMR depart substantially from the strategy of simultaneous, 100 percent containment and treatment that was assigned to OpTech for design in accordance with the Record of Decision (ROD) for Interim Action. This strategy guided the course of the plume containment project over the past two years
The Racial Divide: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Louis Farrakhan's Million Man March Address, Martin Andrew Bartness
The Racial Divide: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Louis Farrakhan's Million Man March Address, Martin Andrew Bartness
Student Work
This study examines Louis Farrakhan's Million Man March address delivered on October 16, 1995, in Washington, D.C. The address was analyzed to discover how Farrakhan responded to an historically significant and controversial rhetorical situation and to determine how race can be discussed in America. Farrakhan's address was analyzed through an application of Hart's (1990) model of the rhetorical situation. The elements of speaker, setting, audience, topic, and persuasive field were found to have a significant impact on what Farrakhan said during his address. Despite Farrakhan's explicit statements to the contrary, analysis of the address revealed an attempt by Farrakhan to …
The Geography And Geomorphic Development Of Gifford Point Near Bellevue, Nebraska, Constance L. Watson
The Geography And Geomorphic Development Of Gifford Point Near Bellevue, Nebraska, Constance L. Watson
Student Work
Anthropogenic influences frequently produce more lasting effects on the landscape than natural forces (Hook, 1994). Many areas of the world have been altered to accommodate human needs. Throughout history, rivers have been diverted or dammed in attempts to provide safe travel routes, irrigation, or energy. Gifford Point is as much a product of human forces - the need for a stable, navigable waterway - as it is of the Missouri River from which it was originally formed. This study explores the factors contributing to geomorphic changes to the point during the past 100 years with emphasis on anthropogenic changes resulting …

Ecology Of The Northern Badlands Elk Herd, Alan Strassler
Ecology Of The Northern Badlands Elk Herd, Alan Strassler
Theses and Dissertations
The current population of Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) in the northern badlands of North Dakota originated from a accidental release in 1977. Efforts to manage the elk population in the northern badlands have been hindered for a number of reasons 1) the census data from fixed-wing aircraft does not adequately determine population sizes in forested areas with low numbers of individuals and herds, 2) habitat use and seasonal home range of elk in this region have not been identified.
The objectives of this study were to determine for the northern badlands elk herd: 1) the movement patterns and …

Ecological Thought, Now And Then., Jared Glenn Parkinson
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In recent years a movement has surfaced which has greatly influenced many different aspects of society. This movement, referred to as the environmental movement, is supported by the central idea that humans are internally related to the environment and that humans have the ability to impair natural systems from being able to maintain themselves and evolve. Some activists in this movement believe that the earth is a living organism and that all objects have intrinsic worth. Environmentalists generally accept a more ecocentric view of the wilderness. This environmental movement is referred to by many different names including the ecological, green, …

No Evidence Of Linkage Between 35 Genetic Markers And The Spider Lamb Syndrome Gene In Sheep, Sarah Thornell South
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Spider Lamb Syndrome (SLS) is a semi-lethal congenital disorder affecting the Suffolk and Hampshire sheep breeds. The clinical manifestations of the syndrome include severe skeletal and muscular abnormalities with long, fine-boned legs, curvature of the spine and nasal septum, minimal muscling and severe muscle atrophy. The affected animals have a difficult time walking and most lambs do not survive past the first six months of life. A single autosomal recessive gene causes the disorder. Researchers believe the SLS gene arose as a single source mutation in a popular Suffolk blood line in the 1970s. Heterozygous carriers of the SLS gene …

The process in the development of such an assay involves; 1) the purification of Hyperimmune Rabbit Serum containing anti-CMV antibodies, 2) determination of the appropriate concentrations necessary to provide a clear and concise response to the test, and 3) testing of monoclonal antibodies to determine their specificity towards the …
George Crumb And Makrokosmos, Volume 1, Jennelle Anderson
George Crumb And Makrokosmos, Volume 1, Jennelle Anderson
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In the words of David Burge, "George Crumb provided his listeners with something of the sensation of awe, wonder, and enigmatic beauty that he himself felt concerning the 'mysteries.' He named movements after geological eras, referred to images as coming from 'the dark land,' invented visual symbols for his scores, and concocted numerological schemes. For many listeners these extra musical trappings provided an avenue into the music itself, allowing them to listen to it openly and with interest rather than with resistance and skepticism" (Burge, 1990, p. 212).
Schaller And Matthiessen Journey Through The Himalayas: Two Contemporary Nature Writers Synthesize Science And Spirituality, Audrie Jane Turner
Schaller And Matthiessen Journey Through The Himalayas: Two Contemporary Nature Writers Synthesize Science And Spirituality, Audrie Jane Turner
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Long before Charles Darwin's time, members of Western civilization viewed the sciences and spirituality as antithetical approaches to life. In the last 150 years, the argument for superiority of one over the other has continued, and Darwin's theories merely intensified the debate. However, American nature writing has evolved in a way that often synthesizes science and spirituality. This thesis will discuss this synthesis, and how two contemporary nature writers have dealt with the combination of science and spirituality in the natural and literary world. The merging of these two seemingly opposed subjects may be one of the most instructive and …

Cyberspace, in its present condition has a lot in common with the 19th Century West. It is vast, unmapped, culturally and legally ambiguous ... hard to get around in, and up for grabs. ...It is, of course, a perfect breeding ground for both outlaws and new ideas about liberty...1
So assesses Grateful Dead lyricist-turned-cyberguru John Perry Barlow the new frontier, that vast expanse of computer networks known as the Internet. Yet, in recent months, the law has come to this chaotic domain, where anything goes and nothing remains unsaid. With the passage of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 (CDA), …

Land Degradation And Desertification In Arid And Semiarid Regions, Youssef Bahddou
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Definitions of desertification have been numerous and the subject of hot debate. The definition proposed in 1991 by United Nations UNEP's Desertification Control/Programme Acting Centre (DC/PAC) was "land degradation in arid, semiarid and dry sub-humid areas resulting mainly from adverse human impact". This definition incorporates a number of processes which lead to the impoverishment of soils and vegetation, where human activity has been the main contributory factor. Examples include the loss of organic matter, increase in soil bulk density, decrease in infiltration, high levels of erosion, dunes formation, salinization, and compaction and displacement of top soil. The definition noted above …

Multimedia In Communication Education: A Survey Of Communication Educators, Michelle Hales
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This project was an attempt to determine if and how educators are adapting their curriculum to reflect changes in technology. The survey revealed that the respondents, for the most part, are incorporating multimedia technologies into their curriculum. Results also showed an interesting pattern to that integration. This pattern involved two concepts of multimedia: 1) multimedia as a new form of communication (HTML, CD-ROMs, etc.), and 2) multimedia as a tool to enhance traditional forms of communication (broadcast news, print journalism, etc.). It was found that educators considered multimedia applications to enhance traditional forms of communication (i.e. image creation software, desktop/non-linear …

This thesis provides the first detailed description and analysis of the De Villers Book of Hours. Following a description of books of hours in general, the …
Where Language Touches The Earth: Folklore And Ecology In Tohono O'Odham Plant Emergence Narratives, Jennifer L. Hughes
Where Language Touches The Earth: Folklore And Ecology In Tohono O'Odham Plant Emergence Narratives, Jennifer L. Hughes
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The historical and ecological relationships between the Tohono O'odham and the Sonoran desert landscape are expressed in the stories they tell. The Tohono O'odham have lived in the deserts of southwestern Arizona and northern Mexico for centuries, interacting with their environment and gaining intimate knowledge of desert botanical communities. Many of these interactions are dramatized in their traditional oral narratives. I have characterized those traditional oral narratives that illustrate and articulate Tohoro O'odham interrelationships with Sonoran desert botanical communities as "plant emergence narratives." These stories embody and express the reciprocal relationship between the Tohono O'odham and the plants they cultivate …
