A Study Of The Effects Of Shared Peer Reading On Students' Reading Attitudes, Christine Ellen Arsenis
A Study Of The Effects Of Shared Peer Reading On Students' Reading Attitudes, Christine Ellen Arsenis
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of shared peer reading on students' reading attitudes. It was hypothesized that students who participate in shared peer reading would show significant reading attitude improvements, as measured by the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey, over students who do not participate in shared peer reading. The study was a quasi-experimental design consisting of students in two first grade classrooms. Twenty students from each classroom participated in the study. One class was identified as the "participation group" and the other class was identified as the "nonparticipation" group. Both groups were first pretested using …

Problems In Preparation Of Chromosomes For Scanning Electron Microscopy To Reveal Morphology And To Permit Immunocytochemistry Of Sensitive Antigens, A. T. Sumner
Scanning Microscopy
Although much information about chromosome structure and behaviour has been obtained using light microscopy, greater resolution is needed for a thorough understanding of chromosome organisation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) can provide valuable data about these three-dimensional organelles. The introduction of methods using osmium impregnation of methanol-acetic acid-fixed chromosome spreads revolutionised matters, producing life-like images of chromosomes. Nevertheless, it became clear that osmium impregnation introduced various artefacts, although the resulting images were still useful. Methanol-acetic acid-fixed chromosomes are, in fact, flattened on the glass substratum, and the 3-dimensional appearance obtained after osmium impregnation is the result of swelling during this process. …

Signs, Symbols, And Slave Culture: Representations In Black Thunder, Sandra M. Grayson
Signs, Symbols, And Slave Culture: Representations In Black Thunder, Sandra M. Grayson
Trotter Review
Black Thunder (1936), by Arna Bontemps, is a historical novel that recreates Gabriel Prosser's 1800 slave revolt. This novel is useful in reviewing some of the historical and cultural linkages between Black slaves in the U.S. and African cultures. Thematically, Black Thunder does more than represent Black people's self-assertion through revolt, it also shows their assertion of identity through practicing Atlantic (or western) African traditions, especially those of the Kongo. This is a topic that continues to be significant in light of greater contemporary political and economic linkages between U.S. Blacks and Africans, as well as increasing African immigration into …

Second-Order Conditioning Detects Unexpressed Morphine-Induced Salt Aversion, Rick A. Bevins, Timothy A. Delzer, Michael T. Bardo
Second-Order Conditioning Detects Unexpressed Morphine-Induced Salt Aversion, Rick A. Bevins, Timothy A. Delzer, Michael T. Bardo
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Morphine failed to condition a salt taste aversion at a dose (15 mg/kg) sufficient to produce a robust aversion to a saccharin taste. Indeed, three different concentrations of salt (1%, 1.5%, and 2%) paired with the same morphine dose yielded no direct evidence for conditioned aversion. Yet, when a novel saccharin taste was paired in compound with the previously conditioned salt conditioned stimulus, we found evidence for a conditioning to the saccharin cue alone in three separate experiments. Control groups eliminated alternative accounts such as neophobia and differential exposure to morphine. Combined, these findings indicate that morphine conditioned a salt …

The Method Of Radicle Emergence In Phytolacca Americana (Pokeweed), Staci A. Van Winkle
The Method Of Radicle Emergence In Phytolacca Americana (Pokeweed), Staci A. Van Winkle
Honors Theses
Germination is a key element in the development of a plant. This process encompasses several stages, one of which is the elongation of the radicle tip. This process has been noted to occur by different methods such as rapid mitotic division or cell elongation. However, such a mechcmism has not been studied in Phytolacca americana (pokeweed). It was the intention of this study to observe at the cellular level the nature of the Phytolacca americana radicle during normal germination. This was done using a routine histological microtechnique which involves embedding in paraffin and sectioning with a microtome. The sections were …

1996 Summer Theatre
Educating Rita is a witty yet poignant look at a working class woman’s attempts to change her social circumstances through pursuit of an Open University qualification. Educating Rita is one of Willy Russell’s best known plays, drawing on every emotion to produce a profoundly moving, yet also hilarious two-hander. https://stageagent.com/shows/play/6466/educating-rita

Common Epidermal Lesions Of The Bowhead Whale, Balaena Mysticetus, William G. Henk, Dianna L. Mullan
Common Epidermal Lesions Of The Bowhead Whale, Balaena Mysticetus, William G. Henk, Dianna L. Mullan
Scanning Microscopy
Samples of common skin abnormalities from 23 subsistence-harvested bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) were examined. Most lesions fell into three broad classes: shallow lacerations, circular depressions, and epidermal sloughing. Both circular depression lesions and epidermal sloughing lesions may be divided into more than one subgroup based on morphological criteria. Examination of each of the subgroups using light and scanning electron microscopy suggests relationships among the subgroups of a class. These proposed relationships are discussed, as are some possible etiologies. Scanning electron microscopy reveals abundant bacteria and diatoms present in association with each lesion class but no evidence of a particular association …

Feasibility Exploration: "Perfectly" Integrated Crop-Livestock Production, Donald Taylor, Diane H. Rickerl
Feasibility Exploration: "Perfectly" Integrated Crop-Livestock Production, Donald Taylor, Diane H. Rickerl
Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)
In this research report, the following question is examined. Can individual integrated crop and cow-calf operations be simultaneously "balanced" from the standpoints of (1) amounts of manure produced "matching" (plus or minus 10%) the soil fertility needs of producers' cropland and rangeland and (2) amounts of feedgrains and roughages produced matching (plus or minus 10%) the nutrient needs of producers' livestock? Answers to the question were sought through examination of livestock manure production and utilization and livestock feedstuff production and consumption on eight South Dakota integrated crop-livestock case farms.
