Stop Crying Over Spilt Knowledge: A Critical Look At The Theory Of Spillovers And Technical Change, Richard N. Langlois, Paul L. Robertson Aug 1996

Stop Crying Over Spilt Knowledge: A Critical Look At The Theory Of Spillovers And Technical Change, Richard N. Langlois, Paul L. Robertson

Economics Working Papers

This essay analyzes critically the idea of knowledge spillovers, especially as it enters the New Growth Theory. The conventional theory of spillovers, we argue, suffers from a thin and misleading account of the nature of productive knowledge. In this model, firms undersupply R&D, which impedes economic growth and calls for research subsidies. We argue, by contrast, that a more subtle picture of the creation of knowledge, and the presence of network externalities (including true Marshallian external economies), tend to reverse the predictions of neoclassical theory: spillovers may actually lead to increases in the production of new knowledge.

The Symbolic Use Of Sea Shells In Design, Sunah Ahn Aug 1996

The Symbolic Use Of Sea Shells In Design, Sunah Ahn

Theses

This thesis report details the various stages taken in the process of selecting a suitable topic for my graduate thesis, and moving through the various stages to complete an exhibition and an art book on the topic, The symbolic use of sea shells in design. Sea shells are an important design component in all of the visual arts. My thesis is an investigation into how four types of shells (scallop, nautilus, conch, and cowrie) have been used as signifiers in a variety of applications. My goal was to create a book that could be used by designers as a quick …

The Impact Of Probable Depression On Daily Performance In College Students: "Morningness" Versus "Eveningness", Iwona Chelminski Aug 1996

The Impact Of Probable Depression On Daily Performance In College Students: "Morningness" Versus "Eveningness", Iwona Chelminski

Theses and Dissertations

In the present study responses on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form (GDS- SF), and Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CESD) were compared in 1,617 college undergraduates. Also, the "eveningness-morningness" dimension, as measured by the Horne and Ostberg guestionnaire (H&O), was examined among the "probably" depressed student population. In addition, the impact of the "probable" depression on performance on various memory tests at different times of day was investigated. Finally, performance of the "probably" depressed students was compared with performance of the nondepressed students. In the first part of the study 1,617 undergraduates were surveyed and 136 …

Effect Of Catalase Overexpression On Adriamycin Cardiotoxicity In Transgenic Mice, Yan Chen Aug 1996

Effect Of Catalase Overexpression On Adriamycin Cardiotoxicity In Transgenic Mice, Yan Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Adriamycin is an important anticancer agent. However, the clinical use of Adriamycin is limited by its undesirable side effects, especially cardiotoxicity. One of the most likely mechanisms of Adriamycin toxicity is the production of reactive oxygen free radicals. Catalase is a major enzyme involved in detoxification of hydrogen peroxide (H202) in mammalian cells. It has been shown that catalase activity per g tissue of the heart is very low in comparison to other tissues, being only about 2% that of liver in the mouse. This less proficient ability to dispose of reactive oxygen species may be responsible for the high …

The report contains the results of the 1996 SDSU South Dakota Farm Real Estate Survey, the sixth annual SDSU survey developed to estimate agricultural land values and cash rental rates by land use in different regions of South Dakota.

Central Opioid Regulation Of Parental Behavior In Juvenile Rats, Jacquelyn C. Wellman Aug 1996

Central Opioid Regulation Of Parental Behavior In Juvenile Rats, Jacquelyn C. Wellman

Master's Theses

Morphine disrupts full parental behavior (FPB) in adult rats when administered into the preoptic area; effects are reversed with naloxone. The current study emphasizes central administration of morphine into the preoptic area and effects on parental behavior in juveniles and possible naloxone blockade. In Experiment 1, juveniles outfitted with cannulae assemblies aimed at the preoptic region were administered a regimen of morphine, naloxone, or saline, and 30 minutes later were exposed to neonates. Behavior was scored for 1 hour and animals were considered parental if they responded with FPB for 2 consecutive days. Saline and naloxone groups responded to the …

The Archaeology Of Thompson Island, Barbara E. Luedtke

Anthropology Faculty Publication Series

This report summarizes the results of a 1993 survey by UMass Boston, and of previous archaeological fieldwork on Thompson Island, Boston, MA, including background research, documentary research, walkover reconnaissance, and subsurface testing with shovel test pits and 1 meter square excavation units. Despite the fact that many parts of the island have not yet been surveyed, twenty prehistoric sites are now known, an unusually high density for the Boston Harbor Islands. Components range in age from Late Archaic through Late Woodland, with Middle Woodland especially well represented. Several large habitation sites with shell middens are known, in addition to numerous …

Effects Of Fatiguing Stimulation On Intracellular Na+ And K+ In Frog Skeletal Muscle, Edward Michael Balog, Robert H. Fitts Aug 1996

Effects Of Fatiguing Stimulation On Intracellular Na+ And K+ In Frog Skeletal Muscle, Edward Michael Balog, Robert H. Fitts

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this study was to describe the alterations in the intracellular concentrations of sodium ([Na+]i) and potassium ([K+]i) and the membrane potential (Em) as a result of fatiguing stimulation of the frog semitendinosus muscle and to relate these changes to the alterations in the sarcolemma action potential and force-generating ability of the muscle. [Na+]i and [K+]i were measured by using ion-selective microelectrodes. Before stimulation (100-ms trains at 150 Hz, 1 stimulus/s for 5 min), [Na+]i, [K+] …

Using Pre-Instruction Questionnaires To Improve The Small Group Writing Class, Bryan Bardine Aug 1996

Using Pre-Instruction Questionnaires To Improve The Small Group Writing Class, Bryan Bardine

English Faculty Publications

Before I started teaching my two small group writing classes at Goodwill Industries of the Miami Valley, Inc., I wanted to be sure that my students would have a say in the structure of the class. I'd taught the class before, but I found that each time the needs of the students were so diverse that creating a classroom situation where they were active participants most of the time was very difficult. The first two times I taught the classes the reading levels of the students ranged from the 4th to the 10th grade, so I felt limited by what …

Effects Of Exercise And Psychosocial Stress On Blood Glucose In Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetics, Lisa Renae Clemensen Aug 1996

Effects Of Exercise And Psychosocial Stress On Blood Glucose In Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetics, Lisa Renae Clemensen

Dissertations

Non-insulin dependent diabetes often has serious consequences for individuals if blood glucose is not maintained within relatively normal ranges. Exercise and stress have been enumerated as important variables for the control of blood glucose in non-insulin dependent diabetics.

This study compared blood glucose and stress for eight exercise and eight matched control non-exercise adult noninsulin dependent participants. A prospective home monitoring design was used to monitor daily blood glucose, stress, and physical activity via multiple measures for six days.

Results indicated that control participants had significantly higher average blood glucose readings and higher blood glucose variability. Daily stress measures did …

Training Nonconventional Autoclitic And Tact Relationships In Children, Ingolfur Bergsteinsson Aug 1996

Training Nonconventional Autoclitic And Tact Relationships In Children, Ingolfur Bergsteinsson

Dissertations

To some extent, one understands a complex aspect of human language if one can produce that kind of language in children who have not already acquired it. Skinner’s (1957) concept of autoclitic secondary verbal behavior is the most complex of his various verbal units, and until recently has not been the subject of experimental analysis. Howard and Rice (1988) made the first attempt to generate an autoclitic repertoire in preschool children, and the present study is an attempt to corroborate and extend their findings. They worked with the autoclitic “like” which identifies the accompanying primary verbal behavior as a form …

Reactions Of Chlorine And Some Of Its Oxygen Derivatives With Phenol, Lizhuo Zhang Aug 1996

Reactions Of Chlorine And Some Of Its Oxygen Derivatives With Phenol, Lizhuo Zhang

Masters Theses

Chlorine is widely used in industry. It is also the most commonly used disinfectant in water treatment plants. Since the amount of chlorine used is increasing each year, environmental and health concerns arise due to its reactivity with various of organic compounds. Many chlorinated organic compounds are toxic and as a result other non-chlorinating compounds, such as chlorine dioxide, might be potential substitutes in the future, especially in water treatment plants.

Previous studies have indicated that chlorinated organic compounds are not formed when chlorine dioxide is used as a disinfectant. Furthermore no reaction occurs between chlorite and phenol in the …

Livestock Contract Feeding Arrangements, Larry Madsen, Curtis Hoyt, Alan May, Ralph Matz, Jack Davis, Burton Pfueger Aug 1996

Livestock Contract Feeding Arrangements, Larry Madsen, Curtis Hoyt, Alan May, Ralph Matz, Jack Davis, Burton Pfueger

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The “share or contract feeding” arrangements have been a favorable alternative for both livestock owners and feeders for a number of years. Some feeders prefer to risk only their labor and possibly their feed, others are willing to risk the entire cost of feeding livestock but lack the necessary capital or credit. Some livestock owners find it more convenient to contract with a second party to finish their livestock for market. As in all contracts livestock feeding contracts should be fair and understood by both parties. The contract should be designed to meet specific conditions important to the livestock owner …
