Oh, You Beast!, Kay Haugaard Aug 1996

Oh, You Beast!, Kay Haugaard

Word Ways

Once upon a time there was a young chick who thought the world was her oyster and set out to find the bluebird of happiness. She was no dumb bunny and not the least bit squirrely so she got a bee in her bonnet to join the rat race working in an office as a gopher. Soon she was working in a back room with several others, all crammed in like sardines.

The Effects Of Lead Acetate On Host Susceptibility To Trypanosoma Cruzi, Tabitha Ellis Aug 1996

The Effects Of Lead Acetate On Host Susceptibility To Trypanosoma Cruzi, Tabitha Ellis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Trypanosoma cruzi. a protozoan parasite, causes American trypanosomiasis or Chagas' disease. The infective stage of this parasite resides in the hindgut of the reduviid bug (family Reduviidae), which is both host and vector, and is transmitted to the mammalian host through fecal material released during a blood meal. Chagas' disease, an acute to chronic infection resulting in fever, malaise, and heart and liver enlargement, is becoming a concern in the United States due to the large increase in Latin American immigrants, and the lack of safe and effective therapeutic treatment and vaccination. Another growing concern in the United States involves …

Antibody Response To Heat Shock Proteins Of Trypanosoma Cruzi And Histopathology In Mice Infected And Maintained At Elevated Environmental Temperature, Ahmed Arif

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Trypanosoma cruzi is an obligate intracellular parasite infecting 18-20 million people in Latin America. It is the causative agent of Chagas' disease, commonly referred to as American Trypanosomiasis. The C3H murine model is widely used to study experimental Chagas' disease. It is well documented that when these highly susceptible mice are infected with the Brazil strain of T. cruzi and maintained at room temperature (RT), mice die between day 35-45 of infection. However, when held at an elevated temperature of 36°C, C3H mice survive an otherwise lethal infection with T. cruzi. When held at 36°C, the body temperature of the …

Measuring The Momentum Of Throughfall Drops And Raindrops, Paul Kimble Aug 1996

Measuring The Momentum Of Throughfall Drops And Raindrops, Paul Kimble

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The methods previously used to determine the momentum and kinetic energy of throughfall drops in the field do not account for the drop's shape at impact or for the variations of the drop's velocity caused by chaotic air currents. The drop's shape at impact is critical because it influences the drop's measurable momentum, kinetic energy, impact force, and the amount of soil that can be displaced by the falling water drop. Since the momentum and kinetic energy of raindrops and throughfall drops are used as indices of soil particle displacement the most accurate momentum and kinetic energydata would be required …

Outdoor Living Barn: A Specialized Windbreak, Kris Irwin, Jerry Bratton Aug 1996

Outdoor Living Barn: A Specialized Windbreak, Kris Irwin, Jerry Bratton

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

In April of 1987, a spring blizzard swept through northern Kansas and southern Nebraska killing nearly 60,000 newborn calves and other winter stressed animals. This tremendous loss could have been lessened had protection, such as outdoor living barns (OLB), been provided to reduce the windchill. An outdoor living barn is a specialized windbreak, typically composed of trees and shrubs, and strategically located in open grasslands, center pivot irrigation corners, and pasture areas to protect livestock during severe weather situations.

The purpose of an OLB is to: 1) defuse and deflect cold winds away from livestock, moderating the windchill; and 2) …

Forage Quality Of "Matua" Prairie Grass, Kelly King Aug 1996

Forage Quality Of "Matua" Prairie Grass, Kelly King

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Research on the nutritive quality of Matua grass (Bromus willdenowii) is limited in south central Kentucky-Due to the hot summers, mild winters and a 200-day long growing season in Kentucky, herbage quality as well as management practices may differ from those reported in research from other climates. The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritive quality of five forages (Matua, Gala, Smooth bromegrass, Tall fescue and Orchardgrass). The experiment was conducted on a Pembroke silt loam (fine-silty, mixed, mesic mollic Paleudalfs) in south central Kentucky as well as in the greenhouse. Four harvests each were obtained from the …

Marital And Personal-Life Satisfaction Among Married, Female Graduate Students: A Qualitative Analysis Of Value Conflicts, Alecia Gall Aug 1996

Marital And Personal-Life Satisfaction Among Married, Female Graduate Students: A Qualitative Analysis Of Value Conflicts, Alecia Gall

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Fifteen married, female graduate students enrolled full-time during the fall of 1994 were interviewed and audio-tape recorded, guaranteed confidentiality, and assigned pseudonyms. Questions covered the topics of values, experiences in graduate school and marriage, the impact of children, pressures, conflicts, support systems, and coping strategies. I obtained a listing of all married, female graduate students enrolled at a regional state university located in the south central United States during the fall semester of 1994. From this list I identified and contacted those fulltime students who had taken no more than a five-year break between degrees and were under the age …

An Investigation Of Hexatylis Contracta Blomquist (Southern Heartleaf): Individuals, Hybrids, Populations And Species, Patrick Carroll

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Hexastylis contracta Blomquist is a rare herbaceous perennial plant endemic to southeastern North America. The plant exhibits a disjunct distribution, being found on the Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee and Kentucky and also 300 km east in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. This plant was the subject of a population inventory supported through the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission (KNPC) which expanded the number of known populations of the species (28) by 68%, with 47 populations now known to exist. A morphological analysis of this species was done using principal components analysis. This analysis was used to answer questions …

Applications Of Artificial Neural Networks In Interactive Simulation, Payman Jula Aug 1996

Applications Of Artificial Neural Networks In Interactive Simulation, Payman Jula

Masters Theses

Although there have been many improvements in simulation technology over the past few years, it still suffers from many limitations. Simulation methods are usually time consuming and hence not suitable for the interactive decision making processes.

In this project, applications of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to simulate manufacturing systems have been studied. The backpropagation Multiple Layer Perceptrons (MLPs) have been applied to simulate manufacturing systems. Some guidelines for developing appropriate ANNs have been presented. The results of ANN approach have been compared to those of conventional simulation methods.

A Prototype National Drought Alert Strategic Information System For Australia, Ken D. Brook, John O. Carter Aug 1996

A Prototype National Drought Alert Strategic Information System For Australia, Ken D. Brook, John O. Carter

Drought Network News (1994–2001)

Defining and categorizing drought in a quantitative and scientific manner are important national issues for Australian state and Commonwealth governments, landholders, and agribusiness. The challenge for modelers of Australia’s grasslands is to integrate biological models, geographic information systems (GIS), satellite imagery, economics, climatology, and visual high-performance computing into an Internet-deliverable application that can provide easily understood monitoring and prediction advice in near real-time— a national drought alert strategic information system.

Although NOAA satellite-derived imagery has been somewhat useful in the broad-scale spatial assessment of green cover, especially the spatial response of vegetation to rainfall events (Smith, 1994; Dudgeon et al., …

A Hplc Method To Assay Mycotoxins - Fumonisin, Ochratoxin And Zearalenone, Nalini Sadagopan

Masters Theses

A HPLC method to quantitate the mycotoxins Fumonisin B1 (FB1), Ochratoxin A(OA), and Zearalenone (ZON) was developed and validated. Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites of fungi like Fusarium, Asperigillus and Penicillium that contaminate crops. They have a wide array of chemical structures which facilitate their analytical detection.

The analytical method consists of reverse phase chromatography and fluorescence detection. Sample cleanup was performed using SAX and C18 cartridges prior to analysis on the HPLC.

The method developed for FB1 is unique in that it is more sensitive, accurate, and reproducible than the existing methods. Automation is one of the salient features that …
