Dynamics Of Coupled Diffusive And Decompressive Bubble Growth In Magmatic Systems, Alexander A. Prusevich, Dork L. Sahagian Aug 1996

Dynamics Of Coupled Diffusive And Decompressive Bubble Growth In Magmatic Systems, Alexander A. Prusevich, Dork L. Sahagian

Faculty Publications

Bubble growth in an ascending parcel of magma is controlled both by diffusion of oversaturated volatiles and decompression as the magma rises. We have developed a numerical model which explores the processes involved in water exsolution from basaltic and rhyolitic melts rising at a constant rate from magma chamber depths of 4 and 1 km. While the model does not attempt to simulate natural eruptions, it sheds light on the processes which control eruptive behavior under various conditions. Ascent rates are defined such that a constant rate of decompression dP/dt is maintained. A variety of initial ascent rates are considered …

Advanced Instrumentation And Methodology Related To Cryoultramicrotomy: A Review, H. Sitte Aug 1996

Advanced Instrumentation And Methodology Related To Cryoultramicrotomy: A Review, H. Sitte

Scanning Microscopy

This review is concerned with the considerable progress in the field of cryo-ultramicrotomy (cryofixation, cryosectioning, investigation and analysis of cryosections) during recent years. This progress includes both more efficient instrumentation and methodology. The article is mainly directed to the investigation and analysis of frozen-hydrated sections in the low dose cryo-transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cryo-energy filtered TEM (EFTEM). A general survey is followed by an evaluation of the different relevant procedures. Both cryo-ultramicrotomy for macromolecular cytochemistry (Tokuyasu technique) and cryo-ultramicrotomy for element analysis are only shortly mentioned without discussion of the chemical and analytical approach. Because of lack of first …

Thermal Preference Of Spring And Fall Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) During Smoltification, Sally T. Sauter Aug 1996

Thermal Preference Of Spring And Fall Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) During Smoltification, Sally T. Sauter

Dissertations and Theses

Innate species-specific temperature preferences of fish are subjected to fluctuations under a variety of environmental, physiological, and developmental conditions. The temperature preference patterns of two ecologically distinct races of chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) were investigated as laboratory held animals underwent smoltification. Smoltification is a distinct developmental stage in the life history of anadromous salmonids when juvenile fish undergo profound behavioral, morphological, and physiological differentiation prepatory to seawater entry. A group of spring and fall chinook salmon were held under identical conditions of increasing water temperature over the course of smoltification. Another group of spring and fall chinook salmon were held …

Health Promotion Practices Of Nurse Practitioners Practicing In The State Of Mississippi, Valerie O'Briant Sullivan

MSN Research Projects

Health promotion has become a major factor in the practice of modern medicine for reasons such as cost effectiveness, disease prevention, and health promotion. Nurse practitioners are on the forefront in educating the public about health promotion practices. The purpose of this study was to describe the health promotion practices of nurse practitioners who practice in the state of Mississippi. Pender's (1992) Health Promotion Model which uses wellness orientation guided the research. The study addressed the question: What are the health promotion practices of nurse practitioners who practice in the state of Mississippi? The sample was comprised of all nurse …

Cattle Feeding Strategies To Cope With High-Priced Corn, Carl P. Birkelo Aug 1996

Cattle Feeding Strategies To Cope With High-Priced Corn, Carl P. Birkelo

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Record-high corn prices and tight supplies have cattle feeders searching for alternatives to the typical high-corn finishing diets used to get cattle ready for market. Most have looked to other high-energy feeds such as by products to fill the gap. However, these have also increased in price along with corn and, in most cases, offer little savings.

Tautonyms In Biology (Part 1), Samuel S. Long Aug 1996

Tautonyms In Biology (Part 1), Samuel S. Long

Word Ways

One of my hobbies is collecting tautonyms--a harmless and inexpensive activity. Unlike rock-collecting, tautonym-collecting is clean, requires very little exertion, and only a small amount of storage space. Unlike coin or stamp-collecting, tautonym-collecting does not deal in objects of value; I don't have a safe to keep my tautonyms secure, nor do i Have to pay anyone when i come across a tautonym.
