Letter From Dan Glickman To Henry Spira, Dan Glickman

Farm Animal Campaign

In this regard, we are optimistic that the Animal Well-Being Task Group will continue to provide a useful forum for USDA, animal industry commodity groups, and animal protection groups to present their concerns about issues involving the care and treatment of farm animals and to develop workable solutions to problems. We welcome your continued input on this subject.

Efficient Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide Hydrolyzing Autoantibody Light Chains Selected By Phage Display, Sonia Tyutyulkova, Qing-Sheng Gao, Austin Thompson, Stephen I. Rennard, Sudhir Paul

Journal Articles: Pulmonary & Critical Care Med

An immunoglobulin light chain (L chain) library derived from the peripheral blood lymphocytes of a patient with asthma was cloned into a phagemid vector. Phage particles displaying L chains capable of binding vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) were isolated by affinity chromatography. Two VIP binding L chains were expressed in Escherichia coli in soluble form and purified to electrophoretic homogeneity by metal chelating and protein L affinity chromatography. Both L chains catalyzed the hydrolysis of [tyr10-125I]VIP substrate. The catalytic activity eluted at the molecular mass of the monomer form of the L chain (28 kDa) from a gel filtration column. The …

Feed Supplements For Ruminants And Method For Using Same, Thomas C. Jenkins Aug 1996

Feed Supplements For Ruminants And Method For Using Same, Thomas C. Jenkins

Clemson Patents

A fodder and a method are provided for increasing the amount of unsaturated fatty acids in the tissues and milk of ruminants. Specifically, the present invention includes feeding to a ruminant a composition containing the reaction product of an unsaturated fatty acid with a primary amine. The reaction product escapes hydrogenation in the stomachs of the ruminant allowing unsaturated fatty acids to be absorbed into the blood stream of the animal. In one embodiment, the unsaturated fatty acids used to react with the amine are derived from soybean oil. By increasing the amount of unsaturated fatty acids in the tissues …

Vcu Voice (1996-08-19)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Effects Of Weather And Parasitic Insects On Summer Ecology Of Caribou Of The Delta Herd, Frank Matthias MöRschel Aug 1996

Effects Of Weather And Parasitic Insects On Summer Ecology Of Caribou Of The Delta Herd, Frank Matthias MöRschel

Biological Sciences

The roles of weather and parasitic insects in caribou (Rangifer tarandus) ecology were investigated to determine their influence on population dynamics of the Delta Herd. Data on weather, insect abundance, and caribou behavior were collected during two summers. Mosquito season started 21 and 11 June and oestrid fly season 11 July and 21 June in 1994 and 1995, respectively. Mosquito activity was limited by windspeed at temperatures >7°C. Oestrid fly presence was influenced mainly by temperature. Presence of insects and temperature positively influenced, and windspeed negatively influenced rate of activity changes of caribou. Feeding decreased and standing increased with insect …

Livestock Production Contract Checklist For South Dakota Producers, Coopeative Extension Service, South Dakota State University Aug 1996

Livestock Production Contract Checklist For South Dakota Producers, Coopeative Extension Service, South Dakota State University

SDSU Extension Circulars

Significant changes in the dynamics of the South Dakota livestock industry are providing producers an opportunity to evaluate new livestock care and feeding arrangements. Many of these arrangements involve livestock production contracts. A livestock production contract can be defined as an agreement under which a producer feeds and cares for livestock owned by a contractor in return for payment. Production contracts should be distinguished from marketing agreements, cash forward contracts, and futures contracts which involve the sale of livestock produced and owned by the producer. This checklist has been developed by Extension ag production specialists to serve as an educational …

Quantitative Analyses Of Microwear And Honing On The Sloping Crest Of The P3 In Female Japanese Monkeys (Macaca Fuscata), Teruyuki Hojo Aug 1996

Quantitative Analyses Of Microwear And Honing On The Sloping Crest Of The P3 In Female Japanese Monkeys (Macaca Fuscata), Teruyuki Hojo

Scanning Microscopy

Female wild Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata), as with all male cercopithecoids, use the mesiobuccal surfaces or the elongated crests of the mandibular third premolars (P3s), as cutting blocks that wear against edges of maxillary canines during threat manifestation or food-eating. In other words, the crests of their P3s are honed with the maxillary canines. The crests become sloped during growth and more heavily striated with the advance of age. The number, directions, lengths, and widths of these striations have been analyzed quantitatively using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Two samples showed two distinct types of parallel striations, one longer and thicker …

The Neonatal Chinchilla Cochlea: Morphological And Functional Study, R. V. Harrison, J. R. Cullen, S. Takeno, R. J. Mount Aug 1996

The Neonatal Chinchilla Cochlea: Morphological And Functional Study, R. V. Harrison, J. R. Cullen, S. Takeno, R. J. Mount

Scanning Microscopy

The developmental time scale of the cochlea varies from species to species. We investigate here the condition of the neonatal cochlea in the chinchilla, a species increasingly used in auditory research. We have examined the morphology of cochlear hair cells using scanning microscopy, and the development of auditory function during the first postnatal month by monitoring auditory brainstem evoked responses (ABR). We find that although there were some outer hair cell kinocilia present in middle and apical areas, the hair cells otherwise were mature at 24 hours after birth. Furthermore, cochlear auditory thresholds are adult-like at birth. However, whilst there …

The Influence Of Fluorescent Light On The Development Of In Vitro Fertilized Bovine Oocytes, Jared Bunch Aug 1996

The Influence Of Fluorescent Light On The Development Of In Vitro Fertilized Bovine Oocytes, Jared Bunch

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Advances in in vitro fertilization and in vitro culture techniques have allowed considerable progress in identifying physiological requirements of mammalian embryos. Parrish et al. (11) reported a major breakthrough on in vitro fertilization when his group identified heparin as an important factor for the capacitation of spermatozoa. Capacitation is necessary for fertilization of matured oocytes. During the precoculture era of embryos (prior to 1980), the development of early preirnplantation embryos was vary limited regardless of medium, medium supplement, gas atmosphere, osmolarity or pH used (7). Coculture techniques of fertilized oocytes using somatic cells during in vitro production, particularly of bovine …
