A Petri Net Design, Simulation, And Verification Tool, Richard Brink Sep 1996

A Petri Net Design, Simulation, And Verification Tool, Richard Brink

Theses

Increasing desire for thorough simulation and analysis of engineered products is quickly replacing the prototype and test design model. Petri nets are important instruments for modeling concurrent, distributed, asynchronous, parallel, deterministic, and non-deterministic systems. This tool provides designers with the ability to easily specify a Petri net design with an easy to use user interface, then simulate and analyze the Petri net to determine essential design properties using the reachability tree technique. The tool will construct a reachability tree, then analyze the tree for properties of safeness, boundedness, liveness, and conservativeness.

The Evolution Of International Norms, Ann Florini Sep 1996

The Evolution Of International Norms, Ann Florini

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article puts forward a theoretical explanation for why norms of international behavior change over time. It argues that the mainstream neorealist and neoliberal arguments on the static nature of state interests are implausible, as the recent empirical work of the growing constructivist school has convincingly shown. But the constructivists have not yet provided a theoretical basis for understanding why one norm rather than another becomes institutionalized, nor has learning theory yet provided an adequate explanation. An evolutionary approach that draws its hypotheses from an analogy to population genetics offers a promising alternative. This article briefly outlines the constructivist critique …

Social Constructions Of Nature In Urban Singapore, Lily Kong, Brenda S. A. Yeoh Sep 1996

Social Constructions Of Nature In Urban Singapore, Lily Kong, Brenda S. A. Yeoh

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Wilderness was increasingly evaluated either as a resource to be exploited or a resource to be protected. Those who urged the protection of wilderness viewed it as a place for outdoor recreation and safe enough for the family; others saw it as a museum of natural curiosities, a tourist attraction; while the high minded revered it as nature's cathedral. [Yi-Fu Tuan 1971: 38]

Hell Vision, Willie Li-Wei Yang Sep 1996

Hell Vision, Willie Li-Wei Yang

Theses

This thesis is a guided tour of my version of HELL. HELL consist of nine levels and each level has its own storyline. The reason for choosing this subject is because there are no real concrete ideas of HELL and therefore, it is an area that I can truly explore and use my imagination to create an environment that will appeal to the emotions of the users. The overall goal of this thesis is to try to bring out the emotions of fear, frustration, madness, and humor from the users. The secondary goal is to explore the limit of user …

A Comprehensive Modeling Environment For The Simulation Of Groundwater Flow And Transport, S. J. Owen, Norman L. Jones, J. P. Holland Sep 1996

A Comprehensive Modeling Environment For The Simulation Of Groundwater Flow And Transport, S. J. Owen, Norman L. Jones, J. P. Holland

Faculty Publications

A comprehensive graphical modeling environment has been developed to address the needs of the computer simulation of groundwater flow and transport. The Department of Defense Groundwater Modeling Systems (GMS), developed at the Engineering Computer Graphics Laboratory at Brigham Young University, is part of a multi-year project funded through the Department of Defense, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency. GMS is a graphically based software tool providing facility through all aspects of the groundwater flow and transport modeling process. Facilities include geometric modeling of hydrostratigraphy, two- and three-dimensional mesh generation, graphically based model input for specific flow and transport codes, …
