Measurement Of Pressure And Assessment Of Cavitation For A 22.5-Khz Intra-Arterial Angioplasty Device, I. R. S. Makin, E. Carr Everbach

Engineering Faculty Works

This study was performed to understand better the mechanisms of action of an (22.5 kHz) ultrasonic wire catheter device used to remove atheromatous plaque in diseased blood vessels (ultrasonic angioplasty). During a clinical procedure, the wire acts as an acoustic waveguide to transfer acoustic energy from a generator outside the body to the ball tip of the wire, which is inserted in the blood vessel. The acoustic field radiated by the vibrating ball tip (1.5- to 3.0-mm diameter), was mapped in a relatively large (600 L) water tank and compared to the field from a well-characterized simple source. A dipolelike …

Characterization Of Experimentally Induced, Nonaflatoxigenic Variant Strains Of Aspergillus Parasiticus., Shubha Kale Ireland, J. W. Cary, D. Bhatnagar, J. W. Bennett

Faculty and Staff Publications

Six previously isolated, nonaflatoxigenic variants of Aspergillus parasiticus, designated sec mutants, were characterized morphologically by electron microscopy, biochemically by biotransformation studies with an aflatoxin precursor, and genetically by Northern (RNA) hybridization analysis of aflatoxin biosynthetic gene transcripts. Scanning electron micrographs clearly demonstrated that compared with the parental sec+ forms, the variant sec forms had an abundance of vegetative mycelia, orders of magnitude reduced number of conidiophores and conidia, and abnormal metulae. Conidiospores were detected in sec cultures only at higher magnifications (x500), in contrast to the sec+ (wild-type) strain, in which abundant conidiospores (masking the vegetative mycelia) were observed even …

Biology Faculty Articles

While viral infections and their impact are well studied in domestic cats, only limited information is available on their occurrence in free-ranging lions. The goals of the present study were (i) to investigate the prevalence of antibodies to feline calicivirus (FCV), herpesvirus (FHV), coronavirus (FCoV), parvovirus (FPV), and immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and of feline leukemia virus (FeLV) antigen in 311 serum samples collected between 1984 and 1991 from lions inhabiting Tanzania’s national parks and (ii) to evaluate the possible biological importance and the interrelationship of these viral infections. Antibodies to FCV, never reported previously in free-ranging lions, were detected in …

In Vitro Fatigue Behavior Of The Equine Third Metacarpus: Remodeling And Microcrack Damage Analysis, R.B. Martin, V.A. Gibson, S.M. Stover, J.C. Gibeling, L.V. Griffin Sep 1996

In Vitro Fatigue Behavior Of The Equine Third Metacarpus: Remodeling And Microcrack Damage Analysis, R.B. Martin, V.A. Gibson, S.M. Stover, J.C. Gibeling, L.V. Griffin

Biomedical Engineering

We studied remodeling and microcrack damage in specimens of Thoroughbred racehorse third metacarpal bone that had been subjected to monotonic or fatigue failure. We asked three questions. What effects does mechanical loading have on histologically observable microcrack damage? Are there regional variations in remodeling of the equine cannon bone, and do these variations correlate with mechanical properties? To what extent are remodeling and microcrack damage age-dependent? Machined beams from the medial, lateral, and dorsal cortices were loaded to fracture in four-point bending monotonically, or cyclically at a load initially producing 10,000 microstrain. Specimens were then bulk-stained in basic fuchsin, and …

Distribution And Abundance Of Roof-Nesting Gulls In The Great Lakes Region Of The United States, Chris P. Dwyer, Jerrod L. Belant, Richard A. Dolbeer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

In 1994, we conducted aerial, mail, and telephone surveys to determine the distribution and abundance of roof-nesting gulls in states bordering the Great Lakes. We documented more than 7,922 nesting pairs of gulls at 30 colonies in four states; species composition was 71% ring-billed (Larus delawarensis^, 24% herring (Z. argentatus^, and 5% unknown. Colony size ranged from 1 to 1,003 nesting pairs. Proportions of ring-billed gulls nesting less that 5.0 and more than 10.0 km from the Great Lakes were 31% and 39%, in contrast to 63% and less than 1% for herring gulls, respectively. Maximum distances herring and ring-billed …

Pancreatic Expression Of Interleukin-4 Abrogates Insulitis And Autoimmune Diabetes In Nonobese Diabetic (Nod) Mice., Regula Mueller, Troy Krahl, Nora Sarvetnick Sep 1996

Pancreatic Expression Of Interleukin-4 Abrogates Insulitis And Autoimmune Diabetes In Nonobese Diabetic (Nod) Mice., Regula Mueller, Troy Krahl, Nora Sarvetnick

Journal Articles: Regenerative Medicine

Diabetes in nonobese diabetic (NOD) mice is a T cell-dependent autoimmune disease. The destructive activities of autoreactive T cells have been shown to be tightly regulated by effector molecules. In particular, T helper (Th) 1 cytokines have been linked to diabetes pathogenesis, whereas Th2 cytokines and the cells that release them have been postulated to be protective from disease. To test this hypothesis, we generated transgenic NOD mice that express interleukin (IL) 4 in their pancreatic beta cells under the control of the human insulin promoter. We found that transgenic NOD-IL-4 mice, both females and males, were completely protected from …

Physical Modeling For Interaction In Real-Time Simulation, Curtis Lisle

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

The goal of this project was to model objects in a simulated environment with a method which allows physically-correct behavior to be calculated in real-time. Our approach studied the interaction between differing object types and used object-oriented software design to create a class hierarchy of objects suitable for interactive speed virtual environment simulation. We studied physical modeling systems and constraint systems as techniques to control the behavior of objects in our simulations. We also studied two different ways to achieve distributed execution of an object-oriented simulation. In our first approach, we designed a set of simulation software which ran built …

Property Rights And Growth Management In Florida: Balancing Opportunity And Responsibility In A Changing Political Climate, Michael Murphy Sep 1996

Property Rights And Growth Management In Florida: Balancing Opportunity And Responsibility In A Changing Political Climate, Michael Murphy

Pace Environmental Law Review

This Article examines the practical and legal consequences of the Florida's Property Rights Act on its growth management system. Responding to a vocal property rights movement, in 1995 Florida enacted one of the most far reaching property rights compensation measures to date. The new law allows property owners to seek compensation for any governmental action that "inordinately burdens" the use of their property, a threshold below the requirement for a constitutional takings claim. Ten years earlier, Florida enacted a comprehensive growth management system aimed at protecting Florida's dwindling natural resources and preserving the quality of life enjoyed by the state's …

Intestinal Lesions Caused By Two Swine Chlamydial Isolates In Gnotobiotic Pigs, Douglas G. Rogers, Arthur A. Andersen

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to determine whether 2 distinct chlamydial isolates recovered from the intestines and feces of diarrheic nursery pigs could cause intestinal lesions in gnotobiotic pigs. Both isolates share biological characteristics with Chlamydia trachomatis. Chlamydial isolates R27 and R19 were propagated in Vero cells or embryonated eggs, respectively, and suspended in sucrose-phosphate-glutamine buffer with 10% fetal bovine serum for inoculation. Sham inocula were prepared from uninfected cell culture lysates and from uninfected eggs. Each piglet was fed 1 ml of inoculum or sham inoculum at 3-4 days of age. Ten piglets were each fed 10 …

Lung And Nasal Lesions Caused By A Swine Chlamydial Isolate In Gnotobiotic Pigs, Douglas G. Rogers, Arthur A. Andersen, Breck D. Hunsaker

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to determine whether a chlamydial isolate recovered from nasal swabs from swine with pneumonia could cause pneumonia and rhinitis in gnotobiotic pigs. The identity of the isolate currently is unknown, but it shares characteristics with Chlamydia trachomatis. After propagation in Vero cells and preparation of the inoculum (2.5 x 1010 inclusion-forming units/ml), Chlamydiae were instilled into nostrils (1.0 ml/nostril) and lungs (2.0 ml intralaryngeally) of 15 anesthetized 3-day-old gnotobiotic piglets. Five age-matched gnotobiotic piglets were anesthetized and sham infected with uninfected cell culture lysates. Two treated piglets were moribund and 2 were severely …

Modeling Ventricular-Vascular Coupling In The Developing Embryo, Michael Bauman Sep 1996

Modeling Ventricular-Vascular Coupling In The Developing Embryo, Michael Bauman

Theses

Congenital cardiovascular malformations are one of the major contributors to infant mortality in the United States today. Defects in the cardiovascular system are evident at very early stages in the developing embryo, yet there exists no substantial diagnostic tool(s) for recognizing defects at these early stages. Cardiac morphogensis occurs throughout the pre-innervated period of embryonic development. It is speculated that the flow of blood during the early embryonic stages plays an important role in the development of the cardiovascular system. Blood flow is a possible mechanism for communication between the heart and vasculature, contributing to cardiac development. The objective of …

Monoclonal Antibodies For Detection Of The H7 Antigen Of Escherichia Coli, Yongsheng He, James E. Keen, Ralph B. Westerman, E. Travis Littledike, Jimmy Kwang

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Two murine monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) (2B7 and 46E9-9) reactive with the H7 flagellar antigen of Escherichia coli were produced and characterized. A total of 217 E. coli strains (48 O157:H7, 4 O157:NM, 23 O157:non-H7, 22 H7:non-O157, and 120 non-O157:non-H7), 17 Salmonella serovars, and 29 other gramnegative bacteria were used to evaluate the reactivities of the two MAbs by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Both MAbs reacted strongly with all E. coli strains possessing the H7 antigen and with H23- and H24-positive E. coli strains. Indirect ELISA MAb specificity was confirmed by inhibition ELISA and by Western blotting (immunoblotting), using partially …

United States V. Hayashi: Taking Aim At The Marine Mammal Protection Act, Marc A. Yaggi Sep 1996

United States V. Hayashi: Taking Aim At The Marine Mammal Protection Act, Marc A. Yaggi

Pace Environmental Law Review

The Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) was enacted in 1972, in an effort to curb the increasing fatality rates of marine mammals that were caused, in part, by fishermen. Upon enacting the MMPA, Congress implemented a "taking" provision - the core provision - which prohibits the "take" of any marine mammal, with certain exceptions for commercial fishermen. A criminal case involving the "take" provision, United States v. Hayashi, charged David Hayashi, a non-commercial fisherman, with violating the MMPA by firing a rifle at porpoises that were chasing his tuna catch. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed Hayashi's conviction, effectively …

The Regulation Of Deep-Well Injection: A Changing Environment Beneath The Surface, Earle A. Herbert Sep 1996

The Regulation Of Deep-Well Injection: A Changing Environment Beneath The Surface, Earle A. Herbert

Pace Environmental Law Review

Deep-well injection has been a mainstay of hazardous waste disposal for over 70 years. Before the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created, there were concerns as to the proper place for deep-well injection as a waste management technique. Over the years, environmentalists have been concerned with the potential for contamination of drinking water supplies from deep-well injection. Industry has also shown concern about -deep-well injection, but from a different perspective. To industry, deep-well injection is a precious, limited resource. It is within this context that Congress and the EPA have regulated deep-well injection. It is that process of regulation …
