Myth Understanding, Chris Jackson
Myth Understanding, Chris Jackson
Theses
"Myth Understanding" is a prototype of an interactive educational program geared towards elementary school children. It provides self-paced instruction, mixing animation, graphics, and sound with information pertaining to earth science. Mythological characters from ancient Greece are sources which provide the child with scientific as well as historic information. In effect, children learn about ancient Greek mythology as they discover the mysteries and makeup of the earth. Children are given the flexibility to decide on what information to view ac cording to their own personal preference. Meticulous attention was given to the artwork interface design and layout. "Myth Understanding" incorporates multimedia …
Thinking About Cities: The Central Tradition In U.S. Urban History, Carl Abbott
Thinking About Cities: The Central Tradition In U.S. Urban History, Carl Abbott
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
Urban history in United States in the last 150 years has been concerned with two central questions. Historians of three generations focused on the process of urbanization and the problem of civic order in the cities. The historians of recent times emphasize on community formation as the determinant of economic growth and its general effect. Earlier scholars discussed the creation of communities and institutions and the correlation between urban and national development. Thus, interaction between city and citizen is a viable theme of urban history.

A Recent Record Of Mountain Lion In Nebraska, Hugh H. Genoways, Patricia W. Freeman
A Recent Record Of Mountain Lion In Nebraska, Hugh H. Genoways, Patricia W. Freeman
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
On the morning of November 10, 1991, a deer hunter in the Pine Ridge area of extreme northwestern Nebraska shot a young female mountain lion (Gertzen, 1991, Omaha World-Herald, November 15, Sunrise ed. p. 17sf; Henion, 1991, Omaha World-Herald, November 15, Metro ed. p. 17). Although mountain lions (Felis concolor) were part of the original mammalian fauna of Nebraska (Jones, 1949, J. Mammal. 30: 313; 1962, Bull Univ. Nebraska State Mus. 4: 87-100; 1964, Univ. Kansas Publ., Mus. Nat. Hist. 16: 1-356), the species has been considered to be extirpated from the state. The most recent record that …
Identification And Characterization Of The Thrombin Binding Sites On Fibrin, David A. Meh, Kevin R. Siebenlist, Michael W. Mosesson
Identification And Characterization Of The Thrombin Binding Sites On Fibrin, David A. Meh, Kevin R. Siebenlist, Michael W. Mosesson
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Thrombin binds to fibrin at two classes of non-substrate sites, one of high affinity and the other of low affinity. We investigated the location of these thrombin binding sites by assessing the binding of thrombin to fibrin lacking or containing γ′ chains, which are fibrinogen γ chain variants that contain a highly anionic carboxyl-terminal sequence. We found the high affinity thrombin binding site to be located exclusively in D domains on γ′ chains (Ka, 4.9 × 106−1; n, 1.05 per γ′ chain), whereas the low affinity thrombin binding site was in the fibrin E …

Pragmatic Adjudication, Richard A. Posner
Pragmatic Adjudication, Richard A. Posner
Cardozo Law Review
Pragmatism is at one level a philosophical position, just as scientific realism, transcendental idealism, existentialism, utilitarianism, and logical positivism are. It is the level well illustrated by a recently published book in which Richard Rorty and his critics go at each other hammer and tongs over such questions as whether language reflects reality, whether free will is compatible with a scientific outlook, and whether such questions are even meaningful. It is not the level at which this paper is pitched. My concern is with an issue in "applied" pragmatism, although after listening to Professor Grey's talk at the conference about …

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications
Adriamycin (ADR) is a potent anticancer drug known to cause severe cardiac toxicity. Although ADR generates free radicals, the role of free radicals in the development of cardiac toxicity and the intracellular target for ADR-induced cardiac toxicity are still not well understood. We produced three transgenic mice lines expressing increased levels of human manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), a mitochondrial enzyme, as an animal model to investigate the role of ADR-mediated free radical generation in mitochondria. The human MnSOD was expressed, functionally active, and properly transported into mitochondria in the heart of transgenic mice. The levels of copper-zinc SOD, catalase, and …
