Research in the last few decades has concluded that 90% of Americans get married and that 80% of those who subsequently divorce also remarry (Norton & Moorman, 1987). As a result, the issue of intimate relationships has been significant in the area of counseling. Women often present in counseling with relationship issues and are more likely than males to contact a counselor about martial [sic] or relationship problems. Women appear to be more likely to pursue the relationship in an effort to resolve an area of conflict and thus, it seems, are more often willing to attempt therapy (Wamboldt & …

Family Preservation And Support: Past, Present, And Future, Katharine Hooper-Briar, Anne Broussard, John Ronnau, Alvin L. Sallee

Journal of Family Strengths

As the family preservation and support movement evolves rapidly, this article overviews the past, present and future of this approach to policy and services. Building upon several decades of practice experience and research, and now federally funded, program designers are searching for ways to implement system wide change with an array of services all from a family focus, and strengths perspective. Critical issues facing the movement are discussed and a set of benchmarks to judge our future success is presented.

The purpose of this literature review is to explore the concept of self-esteem and empowerment and to suggest ways of empowering women to develop self-esteem through counseling. To this end, first the review contains an explanation of the condition of women with a focus to their self-esteem. Second, this review provides definitions of self-esteem and an investigation of its importance, development, and the obstacles that prevent women from having self-esteem. A Comparison Of Protective Service Workers' Perceptions Of Ritual And Sexual Abuse In Children: An Exploratory Study, Cathleen A. Lewandowski

Social Work Faculty Publications

This article compares protective service workers' perceptions of sexual abuse to their percepons of ritual abuse. Perceptual elements examined include the type of problem the abuse is for victims, difficulties encountered when investigating an allegation, treatment and assessment resources available in their communities, and a comparison of their definitions of sexual and ritual abuse. The professional community has not reached a consensus on the ritual abuse controversy. Perceptions found in the literature range from the presentation of ritual abuse as a serious social problem that is distinctly different from sexual abuse to a consideration of the ritual abuse phenomenon as …
