The recent changes in world political and economic structures call for an adjustment of legal education theory. The movement toward the globalization of the economy will open opportunities for the expansion of the market of legal services. However, it will also affect the availability and accessibility of those services. This essay describes some of the effects of the globalization movement on legal education and proposes some changes to help meet the challenge of preparing lawyers for practice in this new and rapidly changing world.

They Came From "Beyond The Pale": Security Interests In Tort Claims, Harold R. Weinberg
They Came From "Beyond The Pale": Security Interests In Tort Claims, Harold R. Weinberg
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
"[B]eyond the pale" is how the drafters of Article Nine of the Uniform Commercial Code regarded tort claims. They considered tort claims to be noncommercial assets inappropriate for inclusion as collateral within the scope of a commercial financing statute. Tort claims may not be out-of-bounds much longer. The Article Nine Study Committee of the Permanent Editorial Board for the Uniform Commercial Code recommends expansion of the Article's scope to encompass security interests in claims arising out of tort. This recommendation is significant. Tort causes of action comprise an ever-expanding universe of civil wrongs for which courts afford redress. The owners …

Federal Aid, Black Separatism, And The Public Schools, Joseph Watras
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
In 1967, President Johnson announced the creation of the Model Cities program to give special grants to cities that developed comprehensive plans enlisting federal, state, local, and private resources to transform blighted areas into useful ones. Dayton, Ohio was among the first cities to have such a program, and it was directed by African American residents from the section known as the inner west. While these community activists instituted important reforms within the schools and the neighborhoods where low income African American families lived, they frustrated efforts to racially desegregate the public schools. Consequently, the story of Dayton s Model …

Proverbial Practice: Legal Ethics From Old Testament Wisdom, Gordon J. Beggs
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
The Old Testament book of Proverbs supplied foundational moral values for our nation's legal ethics. With the adoption and revision of formal codes, moral teaching has virtually disappeared from legal ethics. This essay suggests that the wisdom of Proverbs offers a timely challenge to the character of the legal profession by advocating values which include justice, purity, mercy, humility, honesty, candor, truthful testimony, and civility.

Of Rat Time And Terminators, David R. Barnhizer
Of Rat Time And Terminators, David R. Barnhizer
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
A version of rat time is being created within the legal profession as law schools pump 40,000 graduates a year into a saturated system. Understanding our present condition as a period of rat time can help us diagnose the problems of the legal profession, identify the future responsibilities of law schools and the profession, and create more effective solutions than the bandaids that have been proposed or applied thus far. This is particularly important because lawyers and law schools have lost their way. They are afraid to address their most troubling problems and to take the principled actions necessary for …
