Vibrations Of Maroons And Marronage In Caribbean History And Archaelogy, E. Kofi Agorsah Jan 1995

Vibrations Of Maroons And Marronage In Caribbean History And Archaelogy, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

A discussion of the phenomenon of "resistance" as an important element in the shaping of the History of the New World, and the geographical distribution of Maroon resistance groups in the Caribbean and adjoining areas, introduces this paper. It is contended that historical and ethnographic evidence fail to adequately present the true picture of Maroon culture, considered as a only most important element that brings others together in a coherent way. Using evidence from Jamaica, it is illustrated that filling in the existing gap in our knowledge about Maroons and marronage as well as identification of cultural continuities and discontinuities, …

Evidence Of Active Dune Sand On The Great Plains In The 19th Century From Accounts Of Early Explorers, Daniel R. Muhs, Vance T. Holliday Jan 1995

Evidence Of Active Dune Sand On The Great Plains In The 19th Century From Accounts Of Early Explorers, Daniel R. Muhs, Vance T. Holliday

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Eolian sand is extensive over the Great Plains of North America, but is at present mostly stabilized by vegetation. Accounts published by early explorers, however, indicate that at least parts of dune fields in Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, and Texas were active in the 19th century. Based on an index of dune mobility and a regional tree-ring record, the probable causes for these periods of greater eolian activity are droughts, accompanied by higher temperatures, which greatly lowered the precipitationto- evapotranspiration ratio and diminished the cover of stabilizing vegetation. In addition, observations by several explorers, and previous historical studies, indicate …

The Future Of Archival History, James O'Toole Jan 1995

The Future Of Archival History, James O'Toole

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

More than a dozen years ago, the archival educator and writer Richard Cox outlined the development of American archival history and offered some suggestions for the work that still needed to be done in that field. Drawing on a range of publications, from the obscure to the well-known, he surveyed a century of writing in this country on the history of the archives profession, its people, and its institutions, as that history had appeared in monographs and in scholarly journals of state, regional, and national circulation. For all the output, however, Cox concluded that the coverage was uneven in terms …

From Matron To Maven: A New Role And New Professional Identity For Deans Of Women, 1892 To 1916, Jana Nidiffer

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Presidents of mid-nineteenth century coeducational colleges hired dormitory matrons as chaperones or disciplinarians. This arrangement was replaced by a new type of woman administrator-dean of women. The deans were highly trained, ambitious women not content with such a limited role. The careers and strategies of four women who were instrumental in transforming the position of dean of women into a profession are examined. This small cadre of women, working in midwestern institutions, developed an expansive vision for their position: Marion Talbot, University of Chicago, 1892 to 1925; Mary Bidwell Breed, Indiana University, 1901 to 1906; Ada Louise Comstock, University of …

The Seventeenth-Century Revolution In The English Land Law, Charles J. Reid Jr. Jan 1995

The Seventeenth-Century Revolution In The English Land Law, Charles J. Reid Jr.

Cleveland State Law Review

It is the purpose of this Article to explore systematically the creation of the new system of land law in the seventeenth century. The Article opens with a brief introduction to some of the major events of the seventeenth century to assist readers unfamiliar with this period. Successive sections will then treat the abolition of the feudal tenures and the adoption of socage tenure, the defeat of copy hold and the triumph of the enclosure movement, the creation of the rule against perpetuities and the strict settlement, and the creation of the modem trust and mortgage instruments.

[Review Of] Philip S. Foner And Daniel Rosenberg , Eds. Racism, Dissent, And Asian Americans From 1850 To The Present: A Documentary History, Russell Endo

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Numerous historical studies discuss racism against Asian Americans as well as their resistance to racist policies, practices, and thought. While this scholarship correctly stresses the predominance of racism, it contains passing references to non-Asian individuals and organizations who supported better treatment and the rights of Asians. Foner and Rosenberg argue that these small numbers of supporters were dissenters from prevailing anti-Asian racism and that they deserve greater attention because they represent the existence of more than one perspective of Asian Americans.

Federal Criminal Law: The Need, Not For Revised Constitutional Theory Or New Congressional Statutes, But The Exercise Of Responsible Prosecutive Discretion, G. Robert Blakey Jan 1995

Federal Criminal Law: The Need, Not For Revised Constitutional Theory Or New Congressional Statutes, But The Exercise Of Responsible Prosecutive Discretion, G. Robert Blakey

UC Law Journal

The state and federal courts largely exercise concurrent jurisdiction over most criminal law matters. Consequently, most discussions of federalization of crime involve the theoretical question of what crimes should or should not be federalized. Professor Blakey argues that an answer to this question can easily be found in the Constitution.

In his Article, Professor Blakey contends that the true focus of the discussion should not be on "federalization." Rather, he maintains, a meaningful evaluation of the federal system of criminal justice should question whether the system is responding to the antisocial behavior that leads to crime. The author believes we …

The Incorporation Of International Human Rights Standards Into Sexual Orientation Asylum Claims: Cases Of Involuntary "Medical" Intervention, Ryan Goodman Jan 1995

The Incorporation Of International Human Rights Standards Into Sexual Orientation Asylum Claims: Cases Of Involuntary "Medical" Intervention, Ryan Goodman

Faculty Articles

This Note takes the position that the incorporation of international human rights standards into asylum claims gives needed shape to this currently amorphous standard by focusing on one of the greatest threats facing lesbian and gay refugees: involuntary "medical" intervention. Although current asylum law accepts the use of international human rights instruments in establishing persecution, practitioners rarely invoke them in proceedings. Drawing on the example of involuntary "medical" treatment, I hope to demonstrate how international human rights standards can be employed effectively, and thus to encourage their expanded use in this part of the adjudicatory process. Part I of this …
