There are a great many ingenious and entertaining programs for language teaching and drill, and numerous customized Greek and …

Introduction To Another Voice: Educational Life- Writing As Responsible Text, Elizabeth K. Johnson, Lucy F. Townsend

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Good educational biography serves to humanize both historical actors and the past itself. It gives readers a sense of real people involved with real issues in a complex world. If done with sensitivity and skill, educational biography provides us with knowledge, insight and understanding, elements that are always in short supply (Beauchamp, 1980, p. 4).

Sexual Coercion And Reproductive Health: A Focus On Research, Lori L. Heise, Kirsten Moore, Nahid Toubia

Reproductive Health

Gender-based violence is ignored or denied in most societies and neglected by health professionals and researchers, yet it persists in almost all societies, and, in some, it is on the increase. This report is aimed at those in the family planning/reproductive health field who desire to conduct research or implement programs to address sexual violence and its impact on women's reproductive health. Furthermore, it contributes to a better understanding of the context of sexual coercion as well as its causes and consequences. The ideas presented herein are derived largely from a two-day meeting jointly organized by the Ebert Program in …

Women's Status And Family Planning In Bangladesh: An Analysis Of Focus Group Data, Ruth Simmons, Rezina Mita

Reproductive Health

This study involved secondary analysis of a substantial set of 1987–88 focus group data from Bangladesh’s Matlab Thana, where the Family Planning and Health Services Project was underway since 1977. The project was highly successful in increasing family planning (FP) acceptance and provided a rich research base for studying the diffusion of FP and its effects. The study involved 36 focus groups with fieldworkers, community women, husbands, educated women, and community leaders. The intent of the present study is to examine the effect of FP on women's status in Bangladesh, and to prepare papers on that topic. Following leads in …

Domestic Violence: Service Providers' Perceptions Of Factors Affecting Women's Decision To Leave Abusive Relationships, Anne I. Walters Jan 1995

Domestic Violence: Service Providers' Perceptions Of Factors Affecting Women's Decision To Leave Abusive Relationships, Anne I. Walters

Theses : Honours

Review of research conducted into woman abuse indicates there was an emphasis on questions looking at why women stayed in abusive relationships. Little or no research was specifically designed to answer questions about how women leave abusive relationships or determine the salient factors involved. The literature review also highlighted the importance of services and service providers because women who had experienced abuse would seek help and Knight and Hatty (1992) found that the quality of help received determined their future responses. Kurz and Stark (1988) found that workers' perceptions about woman abuse influenced how workers responded to the women seeking …

Review Of Skeletal Biology In The Great Plains: Migration, Warfare, Health, And Subsistence, Edited By Douglas W. Owsley And Richard L. Jantz. Washington, D.C.: Smithsonian Institution Press, 1994. 415 Pages., Alan J. Osborn

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

First paragraph:

The editors and contributors to this large, impressive volume present thirty-two chapters that deal with Great Plains skeletal biology. The goal of these diverse investigations was to derive critical information from human skeletal remains about past inhabitants of the Plains, including prehistoric and historic Indians, as well as Euro-Americans. These contributions are organized topically into five parts: (1) archaeology; (2) demography and paleopathology; (3) biological distance measures and skeletal morphology; (4) diet and subsistence strategies; and (5) warfare. The studies represent the collaborative efforts of archaeologists, physical anthropologists, ethnologists, ethnohistorians, and physical scientists. A major impetus for these …

Attorneys On Bioethics Committees: Unwelcome Menace Or Valuable Asset, Randall B. Bateman Jan 1995

Attorneys On Bioethics Committees: Unwelcome Menace Or Valuable Asset, Randall B. Bateman

Journal of Law and Health

The purpose of this paper is to examine the role(s), if any, of the attorney as a member of bioethics committees, especially hospital ethics committees. In the process of determining whether an attorney should serve on these committees, the arguments will contrast the potential role of an attorney with the different types of attorneys who may be chosen to serve as members of a hospital ethics committee. The ultimate conclusion of this paper is that attorneys do have a role on ethics committees, but that the role depends on the type of attorney, the individual committee and the way the …

Christ-Our-Guest: A Liturgical Adaptation Of Guest Christology, Agbonkhianmeghe E. Orobator Jan 1995

Christ-Our-Guest: A Liturgical Adaptation Of Guest Christology, Agbonkhianmeghe E. Orobator

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Several attempts have been made by African theologians to formulate Christological models for African Christianity. In the preceding issue we published a brief survey of these Christological models, pointing out as one of their deficiencies the lack of a pastoral dimension. This article attempts to remedy this deficiency by constructing a Christological ritual based on Guest Christology and the African understanding of guest. We would be interested in hearing from our readers on the applicability and suitability of this liturgical adaptation.

U.S. Practices In Risk Assessment And Risk Management For Product Safety Under Article 2.2 Of The Agreement On Technical Barriers To Trade, Suckhong Ko Jan 1995

U.S. Practices In Risk Assessment And Risk Management For Product Safety Under Article 2.2 Of The Agreement On Technical Barriers To Trade, Suckhong Ko

LLM Theses and Essays

Article 2.2 of the Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) was applied to the GATT member countries in 1995. This article provides national product safety agencies with requirements for risk assessment and risk management. However, the terms used in the article are broad and open to interpretation. This paper argues that vast discretion and broad terms cannot solve technical barriers effectively; the “minimum requirements” standard within Article 2.2 of the TBT fails to consider those countries whose technology in product safety is inferior to that of developed countries. The United States has some of the strongest product safety measures, …

Indigenous Australians command many languages including autochthonous (Indigenous) and contact languages (creoles and Aboriginal English). This project is concerned with the majority who speak English, especially those who speak English as a first language, in an Aboriginal English variety. The project was developed by Edith Cowan University in cooperation with the Education Department of Western Australia as a response to an increasing demand from teachers of Indigenous students for help in providing for their needs as speakers of Aboriginal English. It was funded from the DEBT National Priority (Reserve) Fund to enable the University to develop course modules in Aboriginal …

Evangelism And Western Education In Western Kenya: Church Of God (Anderson, Indiana), 1905-1949., Dorothy Ann Smith-Akubue

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This is a study of the impact of the evangelistic approach to western education by the Church of God Mission of Anderson, Indiana, U.S.A. on the Luyia of Western Kenya. It describes the types of schools initiated, their strengths and weaknesses, as a result of this missionary endeavor. The focus of this study also reveals new insights as to the social, religious and political impact of mid-western evangelism and education on the Luyia. Through the use of extensive oral interviews and questionnaires from Western Kenya, this study is able to provide a unique African voice in the assessment of the …

(1995) Review Of The Philosophy Of Childhood By Gareth B. Matthews, David K. Kennedy Jan 1995

(1995) Review Of The Philosophy Of Childhood By Gareth B. Matthews, David K. Kennedy

Collected Papers of David Kennedy

In this book, Matthews works the vast, vaguely contiguous fields of academic philosophy, developmental psychology, cognitive science, child study, and education in his own unique and asymmetrical way. His project has a Wittgensteinian flavor; he is an expert at cleaning up muddles, or carefully tugging apart things that, after he's done them, we see didn't belong together anyway. The chapter themes are wide ranging-from children doing philosophy to the theories of reigning child epistemologists, to children's art, to children's rights, to children's understanding of death, to the philosophy in some children's literature, to whether children think morally, to the continuity …

Freedom Of Religion & Religious Minorities In Pakistan: A Study Of Judicial Practice, Tayyab Mahmud Jan 1995

Freedom Of Religion & Religious Minorities In Pakistan: A Study Of Judicial Practice, Tayyab Mahmud

Fordham International Law Journal

Pakistan's successive constitutions, which enumerate guaranteed fundamental rights and provide for the separation of state power and judicial review, contemplate judicial protection of vulnerable sections of society against unlawful executive and legislative actions. This Article focuses upon the remarkably divergent pronouncements of Pakistan's judiciary regarding the religious status and freedom of religion of one particular religious minority, the Ahmadis. The superior judiciary of Pakistan has visited the issue of religious freedom for the Ahmadis repeatedly since the establishment of the State, each time with a different result. The point of departure for this examination is furnished by the recent pronouncement …
