Seen And Unseen Cities: Embodied Worlds In Epic And The Novel., Eamon G. Halpin
Seen And Unseen Cities: Embodied Worlds In Epic And The Novel., Eamon G. Halpin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
By all accounts, the city has ceased to function as a cosmos, a coherent world which can offer meaning and validity to the lives of its inhabitants. If the ancient city presented the very image of order, the city since the advent of the Industrial Revolution has appeared to us as a jungle, a wilderness, a wasteland, an endless labyrinth--all images which suggest an essentially chaotic space, one which lacks any organizing principle or rationale. Moreover, if the city once offered the individual the greatest possible realization of his freedom, it now appears as the space in which he is …
Notions Of Happiness In Rousseau's "Julie"., Peter Buttross Jr
Notions Of Happiness In Rousseau's "Julie"., Peter Buttross Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This enquiry first establishes both the importance and the general meaning of the notions of happiness in Rousseau's corpus. Both private and public happiness are seen as the overarching intent of his life as a thinker. The possibility of a tertiary notion of happiness--between private and public--is presented with the introduction of the subject work Julie; or The New Heloise. Themes considered at some length are passion/virtue, happiness/duty, love/friendship, as well as the notions of Platonic and courtly love--not to mention the dichotomy motion/rest. At the end of Part One of the novel, the lovers are forcibly separated, and the …

Reading Agnes: The Rhetoric Of Gender In Ambrose And Prudentius, Virginia Burrus
Reading Agnes: The Rhetoric Of Gender In Ambrose And Prudentius, Virginia Burrus
Religion - All Scholarship
Readings of two late fourth-century versions of the tale of the virgin martyr Agnes illumine the place of gender within a late ancient Christian discourse that locates itself in complex relation to both a Christian and a classical past. In Ambrose's account, the tale of Agnes, juxtaposed with that of Thecla, constitutes a reworking of the apocryphal tale of the conversion and witness of a sexually continent woman. In Prudentius' text, allusions to the virginal heroine of classical tragedy represent Agnes as a new Polyxena. Through such intertextual play, the ambiguously gendered virgin martyr emerges not only as a model …

A Concern About... Connecting School-To-Work And Service Learning, Council Of Chief State School Officers
A Concern About... Connecting School-To-Work And Service Learning, Council Of Chief State School Officers
School K-12
As interest has grown in school-to-work transition programs and service learning, the commonalities between the two have become increasingly clear. Service learning and school-to-work are forms of experiential education that extend student learning into the community and the worksite. Both provide students with contextualized learning opportunities. Through service learning and school-to-work programs, students engage in learning experiences that help develop organizational, team, and problem-solving skills as well as the competencies and foundation skills identified as important for employability and responsible citizenship (SCANS, 1992; W.T. Grant Commission, 1988).
The Political Economy Of Responsibility In Health And Illness, John Donahue, Meredith B. Mcguire
The Political Economy Of Responsibility In Health And Illness, John Donahue, Meredith B. Mcguire
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research
This article addresses the question: to what extent do health care strategies in a given political economy increase people's perceptions of responsibility to take charge of their health, but do not structurally empower them to satisfy their health needs. In shaping health care policies, societies typically adopt one of three broad strategies, linking their larger political economy and modes of exercising power: a marketplace strategy, a state-managerial strategy or a national participatory strategy. Because of their different arrangements of structural power, these strategies result in three very different approaches to responsibility for health and illness. Changes in the political economy …

Archaeology And The Maroon Heritage In Jamaica, E. Kofi Agorsah
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Of all the fascinating aspects of Jamaican history, the Maroon Melement appears to be the only one that weaves through the whole period, including the present day. Referring to themselves as 'True blu chankofi piti bo," some Maroons of Moore Town in the parish of Portland claim that, with the exception of the freedom fighters of South Africa, they are the only living genuine and most honourable freedom fighters worthy of the name.

Freedom Of Religion & Religious Minorities In Pakistan: A Study Of Judicial Practice, Tayyab Mahmud
Freedom Of Religion & Religious Minorities In Pakistan: A Study Of Judicial Practice, Tayyab Mahmud
Faculty Articles
This article explores the practice of the superior judiciary of Pakistan as it relates to freedom of religion and rights of religious minorities. Pakistan's successive constitutions, which guarantee fundamental rights and provide for separation of powers and judicial review, contemplate judicial protection against unlawful executive and legislative actions. The record of Pakistan's judiciary about protection of the rights of religious minorities is uneven and has gone through three phases. The first phase is remarkable for unequivocal protection of freedom of religion and religious minorities. The second phase contracted this protection through undue deference to the legislature. In the last phase …

Parent, Teacher, And Peer Expectations: How They Are Perceived By Academically Gifted Preadolescent Males And Females, Bobbe Sutton
Parent, Teacher, And Peer Expectations: How They Are Perceived By Academically Gifted Preadolescent Males And Females, Bobbe Sutton
Graduate Research Papers
This study examined the perceptions of a group of preadolescent males and females who were enrolled in academic replacement programs. The targeted issues were the expectations of parents, teachers, and peers as they related to the students' giftedness. Data were collected using a questionnaire and results were compared by gender. Both males and females expressed that parents, teachers, and peers outside the classroom held exaggerated expectations. Males, much more than females, perceived inflated expectations from parents. The impact of these findings on gifted programming is discussed and recommendations are made for further research and for the continued development of comprehensive …
