Digital Safe Spaces: Nonbinary Community Building On Tiktok, Xan Daggett
Digital Safe Spaces: Nonbinary Community Building On Tiktok, Xan Daggett
Theses and Dissertations
Queer and trans individuals have long relied on the Internet for community building and support; however, with the introduction of more than 700 anti-trans bills since the beginning of 2023 (Trans Legislation Tracker, 2024), conservatives’ consistent mocking and dehumanization of gender nonconforming people (ADL, 2023; Berg-Brousseau, 2022), and a record increase in violence specifically against nonbinary individuals (Astor, 2023), trans and nonbinary people are turning to online spaces more than ever as they endure this hostile social and political climate. While nonbinary people make up over 60% of trans adults in the U.S. (Kirzinger et al., 2023), there is very …

As Invisible As Wind, As Formless As Water, Inez Z. Ponce De Leon
Department of Communication Faculty Publications
The Philippine archipelago has a long history of both weather-related myths and battles with extreme weather. Warning bulletins focus on the different hazards that weather hazards can bring, and scientists and public officials alike constantly reprimand citizens for not evacuating despite these detailed bulletins. In this paper, the author looks back on her research in risk communication across different locations in the country and examines how people articulate wind and water as hazards. The author contends that the wind and water are blended into each other as a hazard, as part of a world where risks are embedded into each …

Knyaw/Karen Womanhood, Generational Healing And The Interplay Of Faith, Genocide, Gender Roles, And Education In The Face Of Health Diagnosis, Moo Law Eh Soe
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
During the fall semester of 2023, my honors project aimed to provide representation and shed light on the challenges Knyaw/Karen women encounter as part of their womanhood in traditional and Western communities. The issues are emphasized when these women receive life-altering health diagnosis that not only alters their identities but also requires them to step beyond the invisible parameters of what it means to be a Knyaw/Karen woman. It's worth noting that all the women I interviewed were immigrants from the Thai-Burma Border refugee Camps where Indigenous Knyaw people have been facing at least 70 years of genocide. The project …

Experiences Of Minoritized Learners In Preparation For Graduate Medical And Health Care Education, Ashley M. White, Lindsey E. Eberman, Matthew J. Drescher, Justin Young, Kenneth E. Games
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Context: Disparities in the healthcare system persist in society today, affecting both minoritized patients and providers. A diverse healthcare workforce is ideal to treat a patient population that is also becoming increasingly diverse. We examined the experiences of minoritized students pursuing healthcare-related degrees, including athletic training, in pre-medicine and healthcare professions. Methods: We used a phenomenological approach to explore the lived experiences of 10 minoritized pre-medicine and healthcare profession students (age=20±2 years). Participants engaged in an online semi-structured interview (Zoom, San Jose, CA). All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. We used a consensual qualitative research (CQR) approach with a 3-person …
An Example Of A Multidisciplinary Approach To The Expansion Of Consciousness, April Vihilidal
An Example Of A Multidisciplinary Approach To The Expansion Of Consciousness, April Vihilidal
Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day
Using a multidisciplinary research approach, researchers can explore the role of the brain, mind, and consciousness to experience altered states of consciousness through deep and undisturbed concentration efforts. They can approach the decision-making process during a research event by using a quantitative theory of consciousness as manifested in information processing. An integrated framework combining data from various disciplines can help develop a broader theory of consciousness that is impossible from any single field alone.

Psychology Of Altruism: A Phenomenological Study Of Christian Leaders, Joshua G. Belk
Psychology Of Altruism: A Phenomenological Study Of Christian Leaders, Joshua G. Belk
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Altruism is fundamentally a part of Christianity, but this phenomenon has never been researched from the perspective of Christian leaders. More than simple kindness or generosity, altruism can be defined as actions and behaviors which place a person’s own interests subordinate to another’s. This qualitative study interviews 31 Christian leaders to establish an understanding of what altruism is in the context of Christian faith. The study found that Christian leaders’ experiences with altruism redefines what was previously known about the phenomenon and its role in our lives. Examining the Christian rationale of altruism provides a richer conception of altruism and …
A Transcendental Phenomenological Study Examining Science Faculty Experiences With Change When Transitioning From Traditional Laboratories To Non-Traditional Laboratories, Jessie Bostic
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe science faculty’s experiences with change as they transitioned from using traditional laboratories to using non-traditional laboratories at postsecondary institutions. The theory that guided this study was the transtheoretical model of change, as it explains the processes of change the faculty may have gone through as they transitioned from using traditional laboratories to non-traditional laboratories. A transcendental phenomenological qualitative design was used with a sample of 10 purposely selected post-secondary science faculty members to answer the study’s central question: What are the shared lived experiences of science faculty transitioning from traditional …
The Nature Of Beauty And Its Objective Manifestation Serve As Evidence Of The God Described In The Bible, Michael S. Libby
The Nature Of Beauty And Its Objective Manifestation Serve As Evidence Of The God Described In The Bible, Michael S. Libby
Masters Theses
In exploring the concept of objective beauty in nature, a strong argument emerges for the existence of a divine creator as described in the Bible. This thesis, titled “The Nature of Beauty and its Objective Manifestation Serve as Evidence of the God Described in the Bible,” proposes that the intricate design and objective manifestation of beauty in the world are indicative of a higher transcendent being, prompting us to contemplate the profound mysteries of creation and the interconnectedness of aesthetics and spirituality. Through this lens of beauty, we are challenged to engage in a thought-provoking discourse that encompasses apologetics, philosophy, …
Making Sense Of Ethnocentrism: Intelligence Analysis & National Cultural Dimensions, Travis J. Benson
Making Sense Of Ethnocentrism: Intelligence Analysis & National Cultural Dimensions, Travis J. Benson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Varying internal and external stimulants naturally oscillate the creation of objective intelligence analysis; however, the most egregious offender to accuracy and completeness is the natural human mental process. No element of intelligence analysis is more formidable than the cognitive process that houses specific deviations, known as biases, as it yields inaccuracies and alters what is believed to be a rational response to a complex analytical problem. The phenomenon of ethnocentrism is consistently identified as an analytical limitation of intelligence professionals, derived from cognitive bias. Ultimately, ethnocentrism manifests an analyst’s perception of information directly through the lens of culturally dependent heuristics …

The Inequitable Burden Of Infectious Diseases Among Remote-Living Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Australians: A Product Of History, Stephanie L. Enkel, Rebecca Famlonga, Hannah M. M. Thomas, Nina Lansbury, Jonathan R. Carapetis, Glenn Pearson, Asha C. Bowen
Journal of the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet
Insufficient and poorly maintained housing and plumbing in many remote Australian Indigenous communities in Australia results in reduced capacity to maintain personal hygiene, contributing to infectious disease inequalities. Infections from Streptococcus pyogenes (Strep A) and sequalae are often noted to be the result of contextual poverty; a product of over 230 years of discriminatory practice that has excluded Indigenous people from the basic human rights of healthy, maintained housing afforded to most in the nation. The solutions for eliminating diseases of inequity among Australian Indigenous population are known, their success is historically documented, and yet they are to be comprehensively …
The Heteronomy Of Flesh: A Minor Jurisprudence Of The Use Of The Human Dead And Tissues, Joshua David Michael Shaw
The Heteronomy Of Flesh: A Minor Jurisprudence Of The Use Of The Human Dead And Tissues, Joshua David Michael Shaw
PhD Dissertations
The dissertation addresses historical and contemporary legal literatures—generally literatures that have not succeeded in becoming convention (Peter Goodrich)—that assert or rely on the human body’s “jurisgenerativity” (Robert Cover) to evaluate and determine what should be lawfully done with the human dead or tissues. These literatures demonstrate the limits of doctrinal legal methods and conventional jurisprudence which ordinarily deploy concepts of property or personhood. Instead of property or personhood, these literatures require the jurisprudent to attune to the heteronomy of flesh, a law engendered in the materiality of the body decomposing, cut into parts, or as fragments falling away from the …

This chapter analyses Ubuntu as central to the practice of naming as deployed by antiracist feminists in Brazil. We argue that name listing, name repetition, and citation, among Brazilian feminists of Color, are closely related to Ubuntu philosophy, helping to open up counterpublic spaces of resistance among Brazilian antiracist feminists. Through naming, users acknowledge their place in a larger feminist, antiracist tradition, strengthen their sense of citizenship, create contentious lineages and establish alliances with intersectional feminists in other areas of the Global North and South. Naming is an identity maintenance technique that creates collective identities, disseminates knowledge, offers role models …

Building Community Through Learning Traditional Irish Music, Laura Olson
Building Community Through Learning Traditional Irish Music, Laura Olson
Music ETDs
This thesis foregrounds traditional Irish music and the role it plays in building community. I demonstrate how the genre is defined and transmitted plays an important role in how inclusive the genre can be and where changes need to be made to be more welcoming to new individuals. Playing or singing in musical groups has been shown to combat loneliness but there has been little focus on specific music genres, especially those that are instrumental in nature. This thesis shows that instrumental music can be another tool to combat loneliness and promote overall health and wellbeing using the vehicle of …
Reconceptualizing Museum Decolonization: A Proposal For The Repatriation Of Agency, Bacci Francesca
Reconceptualizing Museum Decolonization: A Proposal For The Repatriation Of Agency, Bacci Francesca
All Works
This paper discusses how cultural governance leadership can adopt a decolonizing operational model for museums, to the advantage of all stakeholders. Key to the proposed framework is foregrounding the repatriation of ex-colonies’ agency as preparatory to the possible repatriation of their objects. The model hypothesizes the creation of an international alliance of museums, ministries of culture and universities/research institutes to form an accrediting body that certifies the status of “decolonized museum”, with appointed national curators or community representatives from each former colony. These professionals can be temporarily hired by institutions worldwide, to support the writing, displaying and storytelling revisions necessary …

INTRODUCTION: Many people, often older adults, living in long-term care homes (OA-LTCH) became socially isolated during the COVID-19 pandemic due to variable restrictions on in-person visits and challenges associated with using technology for social connectivity. Health providers were key to supporting these OA by providing additional care and facilitating their connections with family using technology such as smartphones and iPads. It is important to learn from these experiences to move forwards from the COVID-19 pandemic with evidence-informed strategies that will better position health providers to foster social engagement for OA-LTCH across a range of contextual situations. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory qualitative …
An Investigation Of The Validity Of A Framework Constructed To Predict And Facilitate Upward-Stability, Timothy Streett
An Investigation Of The Validity Of A Framework Constructed To Predict And Facilitate Upward-Stability, Timothy Streett
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
This study is an investigation of the validity of the theoretical assumptions of a programming model which posits that it is not income but rather a collection of personality and dispositional constructs which provide the foundation of an economically stable life, and that empowering those in poverty to improve their economic situation must begin with these constructs or will be a failed effort. The author provides a review of significant literature supporting the idea that these constructs are associated with better outcomes in many aspects of life. The author then provides original investigative research utilizing a self-administered, 40 item agree/disagree …
Disentangling Yoga: A Christian Take On A “Universal” Practice, Leah Mernaugh Bergman
Disentangling Yoga: A Christian Take On A “Universal” Practice, Leah Mernaugh Bergman
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
YOGA has historically posed a number of ethical and spiritual challenges for American evangelical Christians. Drawing from ethnographic research conducted among evangelical practitioners of Christian Yoga in the United States, this article argues that a distinctly Christianized form of modern postural yoga relies on the conceptual disentanglement of yoga from the Hindu tradition. I describe three strategies by which teachers and students of Christian Yoga articulate the relationship between yoga and Hinduism: (1) yoga as having mixed-up roots, (2) yoga as predating Hinduism, and (3) yoga as a gift to the West. This decontextualization of yoga from Hinduism fits within …
The Past As A Colonialist Resource, Deepa Das Acevedo
The Past As A Colonialist Resource, Deepa Das Acevedo
Duke Law Journal
Originalism’s critics have failed to block its rise. For many jurists and legal scholars, the question is no longer whether to espouse originalism but how to espouse it. This Article argues that critics have ceded too much ground by focusing on discrediting originalism as either bad history or shoddy linguistics. To disrupt the cycle of endless “methodological” refinements and effectively address originalism’s continued popularity, critics must do two things: identify a better disciplinary analogue for originalist interpretation and advance an argument that moves beyond methods.
Anthropology can assist with both tasks. Both anthropological analysis and originalist interpretation are premised on …
Building Community Support: A Multi-Scalar Archaeological Analysis Of Sewage Infrastructure In Central Illinois, Anastasia Leigh Ervin
Building Community Support: A Multi-Scalar Archaeological Analysis Of Sewage Infrastructure In Central Illinois, Anastasia Leigh Ervin
Theses and Dissertations
In the 1920s and 1930s in Central Illinois, urban areas implemented sewage infrastructure consisting of underground sewers and sanitation plants. These sanitary districts soon became an essential service provided within the community and the established infrastructure has undergone expansion and technological updates in the decades since. I use methods and concepts of landscape archaeology in combination with 1940 Census socio-economic demographics, GIS viewshed and smellshed (buffer) analysis, and visual spatial analysis to examine the case studies of three sanitary districts in Central Illinois: Bloomington-Normal, Urbana-Champaign, and Sangamon County to evaluate how these infrastructures shaped their landscapes, or sewagescapes. Sewagescapes have …
Curricula As Ideology: A Study Of Cultural Representations In Arabic As A Foreign Language (Afl) Textbooks, Zakaria Fahmi
Curricula As Ideology: A Study Of Cultural Representations In Arabic As A Foreign Language (Afl) Textbooks, Zakaria Fahmi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The present study examines cultural representations in two widely used AFL textbook series, namely Al-Kitaab and Arabiyyat al-Naas. Fundamentally, three main issues motivate this study: (1) the cultural politics of language textbooks underlying the construction and dissemination of cultural knowledge and its prioritization of the latter on grounds of subjectivity, ideology, and power, (2) the politicization of Arabic as a foreign language (AFL) in light of the post 9/11 language advocacy, and (3) the prevailing standard language ideology of al-Arabiya al-fuṣħaa (العربية الفصحى) and the pedagogical challenges posed by Arabic diglossia. The data comprise five textbooks from the aforementioned series, …
Effects Of Diminazene Aceturate On Drosophila Melanogaster: A Lipidomic Analysis, Gabriela Suarez
Effects Of Diminazene Aceturate On Drosophila Melanogaster: A Lipidomic Analysis, Gabriela Suarez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Pesticides are agents designed to eradicate living organisms to preserve agricultural needs.1 Today the most commonly used pesticides are termed “modern pesticides”, they are characterized by lower lipophilicity and limited stability, making them less time persistent in the environment. Among these modern pesticides are organophosphorus, urea, phenoxy alkanoic, triazine, chloroacetanilide, and glyphosate-based pesticides.2 The issue faced with most of these pesticides is that they affect more than just the targeted pest and pose a danger to not only humans, but also entire ecosystems.1,3,4 While there are many different types of pesticides, insecticides show the most variance and …

Using Chatgpt To Generate Gendered Language, Shweta Soundararajan, Manuela Nayantara Jeyaraj, Sarah Jane Delany
Conference papers
Gendered language is the use of words that denote an individual's gender. This can be explicit where the gender is evident in the actual word used, e.g. mother, she, man, but it can also be implicit where social roles or behaviours can signal an individual's gender - for example, expectations that women display communal traits (e.g., affectionate, caring, gentle) and men display agentic traits (e.g., assertive, competitive, decisive). The use of gendered language in NLP systems can perpetuate gender stereotypes and bias. This paper proposes an approach to generating gendered language datasets using ChatGPT which will provide data for data-driven …

Subjugation Of Adivasi Women And The Role Of Ngo Pradan In Holistic Development, Mohosin Mandal, Sahina Khatun
Journal of International Women's Studies
Adivasis are the original inhabitants of India, and their history has been plagued by suffering and deprivation. From the Aryan invasion of 1400 B.C. to the British colonial period, Adivasis have been subjected to domination, displacement, organized loot of resources, and suppression. They are still experiencing forced displacement and other forms of injustice and inequalities in the name of capitalist development. The Indian government took many positive steps to change the condition of Scheduled Tribes (the constitutional term for Adivasi), but despite these governmental actions, no significant changes have been witnessed in their livelihood. A vast majority of the Adivasi …

Financial education is required to enhance financial literacy for socio-economic development. This paper aims to understand the financial literacy level among the Scheduled Tribes of India, specifically the Mao-Naga tribe women of Northeast India. The current paper is based on secondary data and adheres to the steps and process of a systematic review. Prominent authors, times, tribes, countries, journals, and keywords have been identified for the comprehensive analysis. Since the goal of this paper is to review the existing literature regarding financial literacy among tribals, the findings indicate that financial education intervention, socio-cultural practices, social affinity, and early life financial …

Educational Migration And Agency Among Tribal Young Women, Deepika Kumari Meena
Journal of International Women's Studies
In this paper, I examine the understanding of agency among the tribal young women attending college in Pratapgarh (Rajasthan), India. Particularly in light of this shift in their living and academic spaces, I look at how they interpret and perform their agency when it comes to being in a romantic relationship and getting married. It is not uncommon for tribal members to engage in romantic relationships and to seek love marriages. The number of young women migrating for education is increasing. As a result of educational migration, the practice of live-in relationships, romantic relationships, and love marriages has also increased …
