In field studies conducted in Louisiana in 1990 and 1991, area of influence, density, and duration of interference methodologies were used to evaluate wild poinsettia (Eupborbia heterophylla L.) interference in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). In 1990, soybean seed yield within 10 cm of wild poinsettia was similar to distances of 10 to 20 and 20 to 40 cm, but was less than that for distances greater than 40 cm from the weed. In contrast, soybean yields in 1991 growing within 10 cm of the weed were less than at greater distances. Weed interference resulted in a 9.4 and 18% …

The instream distribution of the tetra, Astyanax fasciatus, was investigated through approximately 700 hours of field observations in a small Costa Rican stream on the southwestern Pacific coast near Golfito. Individuals tended to remain in particular pools where they subsisted primarily on a diet of terrestrial insects. These fish were able to migrate, and only as many individuals stayed in any pool as could be sustained there by available food resources. Because the water intercepted insects fairly uniformly over its surface, the biomass of fish occupying any particular pool was proportional to its surface area (r$\sp2$ = 0.652). The amount …

The disturbances of herbivory, simulated "eat-outs" (clipping and removal of above-ground biomass), and burning were examined for their effect on total biomass, individual species abundance, and species richness in several different marsh communities. Herbivory significantly reduced the total community biomass of all the marshes studied. Simulated "eat-outs" reduced the total biomass of the freshwater marsh but had no persistent effect on the total biomass of either the oligohaline or mesohaline marshes of the Pearl River. Both the oligohaline and the mesohaline marshes were able to recover from a removal of above-ground biomass (simulated "eat-out") within two years. The freshwater marsh …

This research studied dialogue journal writing, as it occurred between a teacher and twenty-one students in a French III high school. Results on attitude questionnaire indicated that dialogue journals helped students overcome their fear of the written form and increase their self-confidence and willingness to write. By demystifying the writing process, writing in their dialogue journals helped these students develop positive attitudes. The results on writing proficiency pre and post-tests indicated that students performed as well or better than students after four years of a foreign language in a high school setting or four semesters of college instruction. Two major environmental problems currently affecting Louisiana are a high rate of coastal wetland loss and high levels of surface water pollution. The application of secondarily treated wastewater to wetlands is proposed as a means of dealing with these problems. The benefits of wetland wastewater treatment include improved surface water quality, increased accretion rates to balance subsidence, improved plant productivity, and decreased capital outlays for conventional engineering treatment systems. Wetland treatment systems can be designed and operated to restore deteriorating wetlands to previous levels of productivity. Several genera of aminoglycoside resistant enteric bacteria were isolated from commercial turtle farms. Citrobacter freundii and Proteus vulgaris were the most prevalent organisms. Gentamicin resistance, measured by minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC), ranged as high as 100 $\mu$g/ml. While resistance to other antibiotics was detected in gentamicin-resistant isolates, no correlation was observed between antibiotic resistance and plasmid content. Spontaneous mutation to gentamicin could not account for the high levels of gentamicin resistance found in the original isolates. Regions of chromosomal DNA encoding gentamicin resistance of 100 $\mu$g/ml were obtained from two Citrobacter freundii, two Proteus vulgaris, and two Salmonella enteritidis strains. …

Mangrove soils along the Guinea coast are among the most fertile and potentially suitable soils for rice production. Rice production success and feasibility is hampered by adverse soil chemistry conditions and the use of traditional farming methods. The objectives were to undertake a pedological investigation to characterize these soils during the wet and dry seasons, provide an understanding of fertility constraints, and develop a management plan to improve rice production. While the field of academic literary studies continues to engage in contested debate over defining and revising its curricula (Graff, 1987), teachers remain situated at the sometimes contradictory and often isolated intersections of theory and practice. The goal of this research was to synthesize conductive polymers based on repeating ferrocene units. During the course of this study, the design of the conductive polymers evolved from the initial model based on "stacked" ferrocenes where ethano bridged cyclopentadienyl rings are linked by iron(II), to the latest ferrocene-diene model where ferrocene units were linked by double bonds. In the pursuit of these elusive monomers, attempts at their synthesis led down dead-end routes, even though new molecules were synthesized. The retention and transport behavior of heavy metals in soils is affected by soil chemical heterogeneity. The objectives of this study were to evaluate (i) the effects of heterogeneity on solute transport of heavy metals under steady water flow, (ii) the applicability of single solute and ion exchange isotherms to model Zn and Cd transport in soil columns, (iii) the modelling of the sorption kinetics of Zn under batch and flow conditions, and (iv) the effects of organic matter and iron oxide removal on the kinetics of Zn sorption in soils. Laboratory incubation studies were conducted to measure adsorption, movement, and transformations of urea and hydrolyzed ammoniacal N in flooded soil columns. Urea was added to the floodwater (750 mg N L$\sp{-1}$, equivalent to 150 kg N ha$\sp{-1}$) of Crowley silt loam soil columns and urea diffusion and urea hydrolysis were measured. Subsequent NH$\sb4\sp+$-N and NO$\sb3\sp-$-N distribution after urea application and hydrolysis were measured over a 30 d period under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The Florida parishes of Louisiana experienced a peculiar pattern of development. Following successive periods of English and Spanish domination and an armed insurrection resulting in the shortlived Republic of West Florida, the region stabilized under the control of delta parish planters. A fierce tradition of Jeffersonian republican values encouraged the plain folk to assert themselves politically during the 1830's and 1840's. The general objective of this study was to provide a methodological framework for evaluating stochastic comparative advantage of a crop in a multi-region multi-crop framework and its link with inefficiency at the firm level. In the first stage, regional comparative advantage, defined in terms of relative profitability, was theoretically analyzed on the basis of a firm's behavior under uncertainty. The empirical application involved derivation of a comparative advantage index for major crops produced in different regions of Louisiana. Explanation-based learning (EBL) has been applied numerous times in many different domains using as much background knowledge as possible to guide the learning process. We design and implement a new EBL based algorithm called FORGE (FOrming Rules from Ground Explanations) which operates utilizing limited background knowledge. The input to the FORGE algorithm consists of examples and counterexamples of the target concept in the form of ordered tuples along with example tuples of base relations. From the time of his composition of Op. 23 (1933-34) until his death, Anton Webern composed a series of important twelve-tone vocal works whose texts are drawn exclusively from the poetry of Hildegard Jone. Yet Webern scholars typically ignore the texts of these works when analyzing the scores in which the poems are embedded. My discussion shows, however, that Webern made important musical choices as a result of the poetic content of his texts. A new process for the production of clinical (or controlled size) dextran was developed. This process is simpler, cheaper and more economical than traditional methods. It involves the use of a mixed culture fermentation with a dextranase producing strain (Lipomyces starkeyi ATCC 74054) and a dextransucrase producing strain (Leuconostoc mesenteroides ATCC 10830). The new process produced 84% (w/w) of theoretical yield clinical dextran with an average polydispersity between 1.2 and 1.5. The mechanism of clinical dextran formation is the competitive production of acceptors from newly formed dextran molecules by dextranase. Predator-prey relationships between post-larval and juvenile teleosts are greatly influenced by the manner in which feeding behavior of fish interacts with the behavior of meiofaunal prey. Juvenile starry flounder (Platichthys stellatus Pallas) in a southeastern Alaskan bay fed disproportionately on the harpacticoid copepod Microarthridion littorale (Poppe), particularly on males. This apparent selectivity was not due to differing vertical distribution of harpacticoid species or to feeding in other locations. Comparison of ingested prey to harpacticoid assemblages collected by various techniques (including near-bottom collections) suggested that the prey selection shown by starry flounder may be the result of emergent behavior of its …

Working from a cultural studies perspective, I attempt to delineate both the possibilities and limitations for this perspective on social change. Further, I believe the particular cosmological perspective I advance can help us with this reconceptualization. Studies dealing with the availability and speciation of arsenic (As) as affected by soil redox potential and pH were initiated because of the lack of information on As chemistry in flooded soils. The chemistry of native and applied As was studied in a Crowley silt loam soil (Typic Albaqualf). Arsenic uptake and its toxic effect on two rice cultivars as affected by As chemical form and concentration were also studied. This study presents comprehensive organic geochemical evidence of organic-rich marine shales in the middle Eocene lower part of the Claiborne Group and the lower Eocene-Paleocene Wilcox Group of south Louisiana. The shales are the only post-Cretaceous age sediments in the northwest Gulf of Mexico basin that fit the conventional criteria for liquid hydrocarbon source rocks. Visual and geochemical evidence suggests that the Paleogene shales contain terrestrially derived, amorphous kerogen with high hydrogen indices whose oil potential has been upgraded by bacterial degradation. Autobiography in curriculum theory and practice is being more and more acknowledged as a major force leading toward the development of reflectively analytical teachers, reflexive practitioners, and discursively self-aware individuals. I look to two vital aspects of self-narration to explore. I speak firstly of memory, without which narrative continuity would be impossible. Memory is as involved with learning as it is with storytelling, and I would agree with Krell (1978) that "inquiry into memory and the theory of pedagogy go hand in hand" (p. 131). This work focuses on the production and characterization of crosslinked products obtained from PS II preparations, with the aim of better understanding the structural relationships between the manganese stabilizing protein (MSP) and the interior antenna protein CPa-1. Two oxygen evolving reaction center (OERC) preparations, OERC complex and OERC core, produced various crosslinked products with the hydrophobic crosslinker dithio-bis-(succinimidyl propionate) (DTSP). Crosslinking experiments with OERC complex demonstrated that a close association of MSP to CPa-1 occurs, as both proteins were found to be present simultaneously in various crosslinked products revealed by one- and two-dimensional electrophoretic and immunoblotting techniques. In a biochemical systematic study of the tribe Heliantheae, the isolation and structural elucidation of secondary metabolites from four species is reported. The aerial parts of Melampodium leucanthum afforded, besides the known melampolides melampodin A acetate, leucanthin B and leucanthinin, the new lactone leucanthinin-4-epoxide. Peracid oxidation of leucanthinin provided its monoepoxide derivative, the physical and spectroscopical data of which were identical with the new natural lactone. The isolation and structural elucidation of 7$\alpha$-hydroxydehydrocostus lactone, 13-hydroxy-11,13-dihydro-7,11-dehydro-3-desoxy-zaluzanin C and reynosin from Podachaenium eminens is reported. DRAINMOD-CREAMS model was used to simulate surface runoff and sediment loss from subsurface drained plot and non-subsurface drained plot in southern Louisiana. Seven years (1981-1987) of recorded data were used in this study. In general, the performance of the model in simulating surface runoff and sediment loss from subsurface drained plot is satisfactory. However, the DRAINMOD-CREAMS model did not simulate surface runoff and sediment loss accurately from non-subsurface drained plot. The CREAMS nutrient submodel was also tested on both plots. The mechanism by which quarks, believed to be the fundamental constituents of matter, are prevented from existing in the free state is still unknown. The phenomenon of quark confinement is one of the fundamental problems in physics. One of the most viable candidates for a hypothesis of confinement is the dual superconductor mechanism that likens quark confinement to the Meissner effect in superconductors.
