It has been suggested that human beings do not possess social reality so much as they actively and cooperatively construct it by means of language in interaction with others. The manipulation of symbols, the creation of inferences, the posturing of one's personal identity all work together to enable participants (both speakers and hearers) in a given speech event to create social reality and reaffirm and maintain their social relationships. In-situ light scattering measurements are combined with chemical analysis of sampled soot particles to elucidate the mechanisms through which iron addition affects soot formation and growth processes in fuel-rich, premixed propane and oxygen flames. Soot particle optical inhomogeneity resulting from the addition of iron is accounted for in the light scattering analysis using an effective refractive index model. The influence of iron addition on soot particle diameters, number densities, volume fractions, surface areas, and specific growth rates is investigated. In addition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to determine the chemical state of iron species throughout the flame. The analysis revealed …

This study strives to provide a better understanding of consumer evaluation of product liability cases. A model of consumer perceptions of the liability process, based predominantly on attribution theory, is developed and tested. The research first develops a general attributional model of the liability process, identifies relevant managerially-controllable dimensions of liability cases, and then tests consumer reaction to these factors utilizing experimental scenarios. The influence of several consumer-juror individual difference variables on the evaluation of liability cases is examined. Automatic history matching is refined in this work by expanding the objective function and incorporating reservoir characteristics in the process of parameter selection. Iso-value contours are used to incorporate reservoir characteristics within history-matching parameters. These improvements are implemented in an automatic history-matching algorithm, OPTIM, that is coupled with BOAST II. Case histories of both hypothetical and real reservoirs demonstrated the effectiveness of incorporating reservoir characteristics in automatic history-matching parameters.

Size exclusion (SE) and hydrophobic interaction (HIC) high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods were developed for determining hemoglobin, myoglobin, and total pigments in beef and chicken. Hemoglobin and myoglobin in beef, but not in chicken, were separated by HIC with minimum detectable levels of 0.187 and 0.085 $\mu$g/$\mu$l, respectively. Determination of total pigment by SE-HPLC (minimum detection of 0.001 $\mu$g/$\mu$l) was more sensitive than with spectrophotometric assay. The effects of heat at 55$\sp\circ$C, 70$\sp\circ$C, 85$\sp\circ$C, and 100$\sp\circ$C on the distribution of iron in six fractions (water-soluble, water-insoluble, diffusate, hematin, total heme, and ferritin) in beef and chicken muscles were determined. …

Presented in this dissertation are analytical and quantitative methods developed for an experimental gillnet sampling program for the analysis of the dynamics of fish populations, illustrated here on Louisiana's spotted seatrout population. Chapter 1 presents a new method of estimating gillnet selectivity using a system of simultaneous equations and a non-linear iterative maximum likelihood approach. The model solution is a set of parameter estimates which mathematically describe the response surface of capture probabilities for fish of size-class j in mesh size i. The capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of Vibrio parahaemolyticus was extracted from agar grown cells and purified by ethanol precipitation, hi-speed centrifugation and chromatography on Sepharose CL-4B and Detoxi columns. The CPS was found to be acidic when chromatographed on DEAE cellulose. The three constituting sugars were determined by gas-liquid chromatography to be glucose, galactose and fucose. The molecular weight of CPS is one million or greater and in its pure form appeared to be non-immunogenic for rabbits. A monoclonal antibody (Mab) reactive by ELISA to CPS was generated. Genetic and morphological variation were studied in a brooding (ovoviviparous) and morphologically variable freshwater snail (Viviparus georgianus (Lea)) in the southeastern United States. Eleven populations were clustered into three genetically isolated, allopatric species characterized by 7 to 15 diagnostic loci out of the 38 loci examined. These allopatric species were an eastern species (in eastern and southern Florida), a western species (in the Florida panhandle), and a central species in the Ochlockonee River. Nei's standard genetic distances between species were large (0.23-0.52) compared to within-species distances (0.00-0.06). Moreover, genetic distances between the Ochlockonee River species and other species were larger …

The first essay investigates whether the long run version of purchasing power parity (PPP) holds between Korea and its two major trading partners--the U.S. and Japan. The PPP relationship is examined using cointegration tests, which are proper to see the departures from the long run equilibrium. The second essay examines the empirical relationship between real exchange rates and interest rate differentials in the Korean-U.S. as well as the Korean-Japanese economies. Water column primary production and chlorophyll were sampled between 1986-1991 in Fourleague Bay, LA, a shallow (1.5 m), river-dominated estuary that is extremely turbid (K$\sb{\rm D}$ = 4.44 m$\sp{-1}$). A high speed system for continuous flow-through sampling, Dataflow$\sp\copyright$, was developed to measure physicochemical variables and in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence at high temporal (1 s) and spatial (5 m) resolution from a small boat. Phytoplankton net primary production (NPP) was measured using an incubator which rotated bottles to prevent settling of the contents. NPP was found to be artificially increased by 10-83% at high light levels in non-rotated bottles when cells …

Although the use of portable gas chromatographs is a well established technique, it is still experiencing rapid growth. For continued growth and acceptance, however, it must be a viable alternative over the use of traditional gas chromatographs, in terms of its applicability for identification of important compounds, and its routine use for the analysis of volatile organic compounds (voc) in ambient air. The biggest limitation to the use of portable gas chromatographs is their lack of sensitivity to low concentrations of voc's. Ecological relationships between the fruittree leafroller (FTLR), (Archips argyrospila (Walker)) and a new host, baldcypress (Taxodium distichum (L.)), were investigated in southern Louisiana where persistent annual defoliation over increasingly larger areas has occurred since 1983. Defoliation was observed to correspond with common types of baldcypress foliage morphology; designated as open and appressed. Pondcypress, Shumard oak and citrus foliage also were examined. The objectives were to: (1) determine the relative suitability/susceptibility of foliage types, and (2) quantify parameters of foliage quality possibly influencing FTLR performance. Biochemical, immunological, and structural characterizations of the structural proteins of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) were performed. Various electrophoretic and chromatographic analyses of native and metabolically radiolabeled virus preparations coupled with immunological procedures such as Western blotting and radioimmunoprecipitation were utilized to identify SIV/DeltaB670-encoded polypeptides. Two-dimensional tryptic peptide mapping of each putative viral protein was employed to confirm that each of these components were unique and not cleavage products of precursor polyproteins. Site-directed serological studies using synthetic peptides analogous to regions of the SU and TM protein predicted to have high antigenic potential were performed. A glass vial bioassay was developed to detect permethrin resistance in soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), larvae. Third, fourth, fifth, and sixth instar soybean loopers from laboratory (susceptible) and field strains were exposed to several concentrations of permethrin in 20 ml glass vials. LC$\sb{50}$'s for third, fourth, and fifth instars from each field strain were not significantly different. A discriminating concentration of 0.5 $\mu$g permethrin per vial was identified for detection of permethrin resistance in soybean looper field populations. Field strains from cotton-soybean agroecosystems exhibited higher levels of resistance than strains from soybean-corn agroecosystems. The reliability of the vial bioassay …

This dissertation research was designed with three main objectives: to evaluate the effects of threecornered alfalfa hopper, Spissistilus festinus (Say), feeding on alfalfa, Medicago sativa L., yield, regrowth, root carbohydrate composition, and disease incidence; to screen alfalfa cultivars for resistance to the threecornered alfalfa hopper and develop effective screening techniques; and to determine the mechanism(s) of this resistance. Greenhouse studies determined the effects of threecornered alfalfa hopper infestations on alfalfa growth and their relationship with Fusarium crown-rot. This study examines the ways in which kindergartners from more and less developmentally appropriate classrooms negotiate the process of graphic communication. Both quantitative and qualitative aspects of this process are examined. Eighty-one kindergarten children from four classrooms were asked to tell a story both verbally and graphically. They were encouraged to include drawing, writing, or both on their paper. Then they were asked to tell the story that they had produced graphically. The children were students in one of four classrooms from a single school system that were identified as: (a) most developmentally appropriate beliefs and practices; (b) developmentally appropriate …

Studies were conducted to characterize insecticide resistance and to document aspects of the basic biology of the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, that were related to recommendations for integrated pest management. Laboratory, greenhouse, and field techniques were employed in these investigations. Significant levels of resistance were demonstrated to four recommended insecticide classes. Resistance appeared more stable over time for the organophosphate insecticide (chlorpyrifos) than for the organochlorine (endosulfan) and pyrethroid (bifenthrin) insecticide tested. The organophosphate resistance ratio of a clonal line of the cotton aphid was significant, but relatively low. In contrast to the elitism of the Brazilian formal education system are the efforts of educators at federal universities in promoting educational alternatives for the socioeconomically underprivileged population. Having reached its peak in the late 1950s and early 1960s and culminating with Paulo Freire's successful "conscientization" experiment in Angicos, educational alternatives were revitalized in the 1980s upon the nation's "return to democracy." Two protein factors involved in the transport of precursor proteins into intact chloroplasts have been examined. The first of these was observed in experiments utilizing fusion proteins containing various lengths of wheat pS fused to CaM. Transport experiments with these fusion proteins demonstrated a requirement for transport of a pS/CaM fusion protein of a portion of mature S greater than 4 amino acids. Additionally, when the CaM portion of a fusion protein adopted a stable conformation by binding Ca$\sp{2+}$, a larger portion of mature S was needed for efficient transport. This property characterizes the radiative transport in luminous flames and plays a key role in the interpretation of conventional light scattering measurements. We perform a computational survey of the stability of protostellar systems which contain a self-gravitating disk. The systems are initially represented by a point mass $M\sb{c}$ at the center and a geometrically thick, axisymmetric disk of mass $M\sb{d}$ that supports uniform specific angular momentum and obeys an n = 3/2, polytropic equation of state. The equilibrium disk structure is uniquely defined upon the specification of two key dimensionless system parameters: $M\sb{d}/M\sb{c}$ and $T/\vert W\vert$ (the ratio of rotational kinetic energy of the disk to the gravitational potential energy of the system). The advantage of the transient resonance Raman spectroscopy for this study is demonstrated along with a Raman differencing technique. This study is divided into two main parts. Cladistic analyses of non-molecular and nuclear-encoded rRNA sequence data provided the basis for hypotheses of relationships for the green algal class Ulvophyceae. Non-molecular data rooted with Chara support hypotheses which group the Chlorophyceae and Pleurastrophyceae with ulotrichalean and ulvalean Ulvophyceae. Analyses of rRNA sequence data group the siphonous and siphonocladous Ulvophyceae (i.e. Caulerpales, Siphonocladales, and Dasycladales) with the Chlorophyceae and Pleurastrophyceae. Although hypotheses supported by these independent data sets are incongruent, they suggest that the Ulvophyceae is not monophyletic. This dissertation presents an exposition and development of Kenneth Burke's theory of guilt-purification-redemption (also referred to as the "redemption drama"), and then an application of that theory through a critical analysis of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. King's speech is treated as the "representative anecdote" of the moderate wing of the first phase of the civil rights movement. The speech became an authorizing text on race relations and provided the movement with an articulation of its logic and narrative form. Detecting The Scale And Resolution Effects In Remote Sensing And Gis., Changyong Cao

This study examines the relationship between resolution and fractal dimensions of remotely sensed images. Based on the results of testing for the reliability of the algorithms on hypothetical surfaces, the isarithm algorithm is selected for determining the fractal dimensions of remotely sensed images. This algorithm is then applied to simulated fractal Brownian motion images and four calibrated airborne multispectral remotely sensed image data sets with different true and artificial resolutions for Puerto Rico. This study explores the myth of the self-made man in American popular culture and how Jimmy Swaggart, the renowned televangelist, manipulates this myth in representing himself as an American hero. Central to such inquiry is Swaggart's use of theatrical device in promoting his heroism.
