The assignment of the ¹H, ¹⁵N, ¹³CO, and ¹³C resonances of recombinant human interleukin-4 (IL-4), a protein of 133 residues and molecular mass of 15.4 kDa, is presented based on a series of 11 three-dimensional (3D) double- and triple resonance heteronuclear NMR experiments. These studies employ uniformly labeled ¹⁵N- and ¹⁵N/¹³C-labeled IL-4 with an isotope incorporation of >95% for the protein expressed in yeast. Five independent sequential connectivity pathways via one-, two-, and three-bond heteronuclear J couplings are exploited to obtain unambiguous sequential assignments. The backbone dynamics of the uniformly ¹⁵N-labeled ribonuclease H (RNase H) domain of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV- 1) reverse transcriptase have been investigated using two-dimensional inverse-detected heteronuclear ¹⁵N-^lH NMR spectroscopy. ¹⁵N T₁, T₂, and nuclear Overhauser enhancement (NOE) data were obtained for 107 out of a total of 134 backbone amide groups. The overall rotational correlation time (T_R) for the protein at 26˚ is 10.4 ns. The backbone N-H vectors for all the measurableresidues exhibit very fast motions on a time scale of <20 ps. In 1987, a major disaster occurred when an estimated eight million hectares of tropical forests in Brazil were destroyed (World Resources Institute 1990, 102). This event is considered a disaster because it was only the annual portion of an on-going process having immense spatial and temporal effects. The temporal impact is expected to remain virtually forever. In contrast to many disasters having a limited temporal impact because restoration is possible, the extermination of several biotic species associated with rainforest destruction is permanent. Kaolinite, goethite, minor hematite, and gibbsite were found in fluvial upper Lower Cretaceous basal sediment from the Southern Kerguelen Plateau, Sites 748 and 750, 55°S latitude. This mineral assemblage, derived from the weathering of basalt, indicates near-tropical weathering conditions with high orographic rainfall, at least 100 cm per year. The climate deteriorated by the Turonian or Coniacian, as indicated by the decline in kaolinite content of this sediment.
The Upper Cretaceous sediment at Site 748 consists of 200 m of millimeter-laminated, sparsely fossiliferous, wood-bearing glauconitic siltstone and clay stone with siderite concretions deposited on a shelf below wave base. Some …

Five hundred meters of a unique Upper Cretaceous Cr-rich glauconitic sequence (Unit III) that overlies a 3-m-thick alkali-basalt flow with underlying epiclastic volcanogenic sediments was drilled at ODP Leg 120 Site 748. The Cr-rich glauconitic sequence is lithostratigraphically and biostratigraphically divided into three subunits (IIIA, IIIB, IIIC) that can also be recognized by the Cr concentration of the bulk sediment, which is low (<200 ppm) in Subunits IIIC and IIIA and high (400-800 ppm) in Subunit IIIB. The Cr enrichment is caused by Cr-spinel, which is the only significant heavy mineral component beside Fe-Ti ores. Other Cr-bearing components are glauconite pellets and possibly some other clay minerals.
The glauconitic sequence of Subunit IIIB was formed by reworking of glauconite and volcanogenic components that were transported restricted distances and redeposited downslope by mass-transportation processes. The site of formation was a nearshore, shallow inner shelf …

Solar proton events (SPEs) occur infrequently and unpredictably, thus representing a potential hazard to interplanetary space missions. Biological damage from SPEs will be produced principally through secondary electron production in tissue, including important contributions due to delta rays from nuclear reaction products. We review methods for estimating the biological effectiveness of SPEs using a high energy proton model and the parametric cellular track model. Results of the model are presented for several of the historically largest flares using typical levels and body shielding.

Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) is an important tool in the purification of radiolabeled peptides and proteins for immunoassay. However, for some proteins and peptides it is difficult to achieve reproducible behavior in RP-HPLC because of the low recovery of these compounds. Factors that can be varied to improve recovery include the strength or pH of the mobile phase, the chain length and spacing of groups on the reversed-phase support, and the flow rate or steepness of the elution gradient (1-5). ... The performance and clinical utility of an automated assay of intact parathyroid hormone (parathyrin, PTH) are evaluated. The method is based on the extraction of PTH from plasma by an HPLC column containing immobilized anti-(44-68 PTH) antibodies. The PTH retained is detected with a postcolumn reactor and use of anti-(1--34 PTH) chemiluminescent-labeled antibodies. The total cycle time of the assay is 6.5 mm per injection after a 1-h incubation.The lower limit of detection for PTH in a 66-pL plasma sample was 0.5 pmol/L based on peak heights and 0.2 pmol/L based on peak areas. The most remarkable dietary remains recoverable from archaeological contexts are coprolites. Coprolites are desiccated or mineralized feces that are preserved in sheltered and open sites in arid regions, primarily in the New World. These dietary remains are remarkable from several perspectives. They typically contain a variety of macroscopic and microscopic remains that form interrelated data sets for the reconstruction of diets. Because contexts containing coprolites are typified by excellent preservation, the remains coprolites contain tend to be in better states of preservation than dietary remains recovered from nonfecal deposits. Vertebral pathology has long been a useful criterion for anthropologists in the assessment of activity patterns, stress, and general health of extinct peoples. This method of analysis, however, has never been applied to the peoples of the Nebraska Great Plains. This study is the first to concentrate on the indigenous Native Americans of this region, examining the spinal pathology present in the prehistoric and historic skeletal remains. The Dan Canyon burial was discovered at a time when the philosophy, ethics, and legislation concerning the study of human remains are in a state of flux. A number of important sensitive issues germane to managers, archeologists, and American Indians are discussed in the introduction. We report results of a simulation of the phase transitions in CsLiSO₄. These are based on our previously developed method for calculating parameter-free potential-energy surface for ionic molecular crystals. Our lattice-dynamical and molecular-dynamics studies show that the roomtemperature (Pnam) phase is unstable and transforms to the observed low-temperature (P112₁/n) phase over approximately 200–280 K. The unstable modes of the Pnam phase have maximum instability at the zone center, which indicates a possible phase transformation without a cell multiplication. It is shown that the potential-energy surface in K₂ZnCl₄ contains a double-well structure, very similar to some of the other A₂BX₄ compounds (e.g., K₂SeO₄, Rb₂ZnCl₄), except that the double well is much deeper and broader, giving rise to a highly disordered high-temperature phase as observed experimentally. A lattice-dynamics study of the Pna2₁ structure shows an instability with the wave vector q=0.5b^*+(0.5±δ)c^*, providing an explanation to the incommensurate phase transition reported recently.

We report an attempt to make an optical observation of Matt scattering, involving the first studies of inelastic collisions between polarized electrons and a heavy noble gas. Polarization fractions of light emitted by the 5p⁵6p[5/7],(³D₃) state of Xe following impact excitation in an axial collision geometry were measured as a funclion of the incident electron energy, and compared with distorted-wave Bom calculations. The theoretical and experimental results agree qualitatively in the energy range where cascade contributions to the photon signal are small. The sigB operon of Bacillus subtilis encodes σ^B and three additional open reading frames (orfV, orfW, and orfX). Having previously mapped several mutations that alter the induction pattern of a σ^B-dependent promoter (ctc) to regions of cloned B. subtilis DNA which contain these three open reading frames, we directly tested the regulatory potential of orfV, orfW, and orfX by creating null alleles of each of these genes and examining the effects of the mutations, either singly or in pairs, on transcription of ctc and the sigB operon. …

A single experiment studied how effectively information about the central tendency, variability, and shape of numeric data distributions could be conveyed to statistically knowledgeable subjects. The data were summarized by visual histograms, auditory histograms that coded numeric value as pitch on the musical scale, and five-note auditory analogues of a box-whisker display that coded the minimum, quartile, and maximum scores as musical notes. Regression and multidimensional scaling analysis of judgments of dissimilarity between distributions showed that auditory depiction provides a highly effective means of conveying information about distributional characteristics. Auditory depicition may be a useful alternative to traditional visual graphics.

There is a dearth of research addressing the validity of life stories, or autobiographies. In part, this is because it is unclear how such data sources might be validated. This article recommends two differ-ent perspectives for obtaining evidence relevant to the validity of autobiographical data. A study is conducted from each of these perspectives, and multiple validity estimates are obtained in each in-vestigation. The construct validity of standard psychological constructs (e.g., assertiveness, trustwor-thiness) obtained in Study 1 from autobiographies was equal to that of standard instruments designed to assess these constructs.
