Managerial Communication Practices In Chinese Factories: A Preliminary Investigation, Kathleen J. Krone, Mary Garrett, Ling Chen
Managerial Communication Practices In Chinese Factories: A Preliminary Investigation, Kathleen J. Krone, Mary Garrett, Ling Chen
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
This paper presents the results of a preliminary study of selected managerial communication practices in Chinese factories. Members of a delegation of Chinese managers visiting the United States were interviewed to explore: (a) the extent to which Chinese factories conform to a bureaucratic model of organization, and (b) factory director communication within these organization. Of particular interest were their upward and downward communication practices, and their methods for persuading and motivating workers and managing conflicts with problem employees. The results of our investigation reveal a distinctive form of bureaucracy operating within these factories. Moreover, we describe patterns of managerial communication …

Consultant And Client Outcomes Of Competency-Based Behavioral Consultation Training, Susan M. Sheridan
Consultant And Client Outcomes Of Competency-Based Behavioral Consultation Training, Susan M. Sheridan
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
This article examines how despite increasing demands and empirical support for consultation, its actual practice in schools continues to be limited. One barrier to the systematic provision of consultation services in the schools may be the lack of applied training provided to preservice individuals in graduate preparation programs. A model of behavioral consultation training which extends previous competency- based programs is presented. Trained five doctoral students in school psychology in behavioral consultation procedures using written manuals, videotape models, behavioral rehearsal, performance feedback, self-monitoring, and generalization training. Following university-based practice with trained consultees and student teachers, consultants were assigned consultation cases …
Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of Early Childhood Ability Measures Within A Model Of Personal Competence, Richard F. Ittenbach, Amy N. Spiegel, Kevin S. Mcgrew, Robert H. Bruininks
Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of Early Childhood Ability Measures Within A Model Of Personal Competence, Richard F. Ittenbach, Amy N. Spiegel, Kevin S. Mcgrew, Robert H. Bruininks
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
The present study tested Greenspan’s model of personal competence with data obtained from the Early Screening Profiles, a nationally standardized preschool screening battery designed to measure the general functioning level of children 2–7 years of age. Of the five models tested (three a priori and two a posteriori), three models produced results indicative of a good fit. These findings support the use of Greenspan’s model of personal competence as a framework for understanding the nature of developing abilities in young children as well as for the improvement of classification and diag-nosis of children with special needs.

Review Of Wolfgang Wittkowski, Ed., Revolution Und Autonomie: Deutsche Autonomieästhetik Im Zeitalter Der Französischen Revolution. Ein Symposium., Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy
German Language and Literature Papers
This volume is the last of five in a series edited by Wolfgang Wittkowski and based on symposia held at SUNY-Albany on various aspects of German Classicism. The topic of this last symposium—aesthetic autonomy— fairly bristles with controversy, as historically it has formed a dividing line of sorts between ideological camps within German literary scholarship. Beginning with the Bildungsbürgertum of the 19th century, aesthetic autonomy came to be defined as the mark of highest literary quality, defined formally in terms of closure, self-containment and “perfection,” and restricted in terms of content to the apolitical, “purely aesthetic” realm. On the other …
Altered Expression Of Adenovirus 12 Dna-Binding Protein But Not Dna Polymerase During Abortive Infection Of Hamster Cells, Lynne A. Lucher, Benjawan Khuntirat, Jiansheng Zhao, Peter C. Angeletti
Altered Expression Of Adenovirus 12 Dna-Binding Protein But Not Dna Polymerase During Abortive Infection Of Hamster Cells, Lynne A. Lucher, Benjawan Khuntirat, Jiansheng Zhao, Peter C. Angeletti
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Replication of human adenovirus type 12 DNA is blocked in abortively infected baby hamster kidney cells. The activity and accumulation of adenovirus 12 DNA polymerase is equivalent in infected hamster and human cell extracts. However, the accumulation of adenovirus type 12 DNA-binding protein is approximately 120-fold lower in extracts from infected hamster cells when compared to infected permissive human cells. This difference in accumulation is not because of replication of viral DNA during productive infection, since this difference is observed in the presence of hydroxyurea. The DNA-binding protein from infected hamster cells retains the ability to bind denatured DNA-cellulose. An …
Biological Assessment Missouri National Recreational River
Biological Assessment Missouri National Recreational River
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
This is in response to your May 21, 1992, letter requesting review and concurrence on a biological assessment prepared to evaluate routine actions of Section 404 and Section 10 of the Clean Water Act along the Missouri National Recreational River. This response has been prepared in coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's (Service) Nebraska Fish and Wildlife Enhancement Office.
This revision of your March 6, 1991, assessment addressed many of the concerns and recommendations that we brought to your attention in our April 2, 1991, letter to Mr. Kenneth Cooper and subsequent meeting on May 6, 1991. However, …
Final Environmental Assessment For Endangered Species Habitat Enhancement/Creation Along Tile Missouri River Main Stem System
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
The interior least tern (Sterna antillarum) and the piping plover (Charadrius melodus) are federally endangered and threatened species, respectively, which nest on sandbars in the Missouri River. This nesting habitat has been decreasing in past years, at least in part due to vegetative encroachment. Vegetation is no longer regularly scoured from sandbars by heavy spring flows and/or ice, primarily because flows are regulated by the main stem dams. New sandbar creation is uncommon because the river carries less sediment and is no longer meandering along much of its course. Bank erosion still continues to supply sediment …

Rewriteability In Finite Groups, Judy Leavitt Walker, G. J. Sherman, Mark E. Walker
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
What's the probability that two elements in a finite group commute? A formal answer,
Pr2(G) = {(x, y) [element of] G2 |xy = yx}| / |G|2
begs our next question. How many ordered pairs of elements of a finite group commute?
A Note On The Connectedness Problem For Nest Algebras, David R. Pitts
A Note On The Connectedness Problem For Nest Algebras, David R. Pitts
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
It has been conjectured that a certain operator T belonging to the group ff of invertible elements of the algebra Alg Z of doubly infinite uppertriangular bounded matrices lies outside the connected component of the identity in W. In this note we show that T actually lies inside the connected component of the identity of & .

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Stormwater runoff in urban and industrialized areas carries a considerable amount of pollutants to nearby lakes and streams. In an effort to control this source of pollution, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has issued stormwater regulations to control these discharges. Municipalities with a population of 100,000 or more must undertake a process to obtain permits to control the quality of their storm runoff. The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex includes seven cities that must meet these regulations and obtain permits. The U.S. Geological Survey is assisting the North Texas Council of Governments and its associated cities in meeting the water science requirements …
Numerical Methods 101 - Convergence Of Numerical Models, David B. Thompson
Numerical Methods 101 - Convergence Of Numerical Models, David B. Thompson
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
A numerical model is convergent if and only if a sequence of model solutions with increasingly refined solution domains approaches a fixed value. Furthermore, a numerical model is consistent only if this sequence converges to the solution of the continuous equations which govern the physical phenomenon being modeled. Given that a model is consistent, it is insufficient to apply it to a problem without testing for sensitivity to the size of the time and distance steps which form the discrete approximation of the solution domain. That is, convergence testing is a required component of any modeling study.
Two models were …

Stress-Strain Relation In Debris Flow Analysis, Chi-Hai Ling, Cheng-Lung Chen, Chyan-Deng Jan
Stress-Strain Relation In Debris Flow Analysis, Chi-Hai Ling, Cheng-Lung Chen, Chyan-Deng Jan
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
In debris flow analysis, the generalized viscop1astic fluid (GVF) model can be used as the constitutive equations. When the yield stress is negligible, the shear expression in the GVF model for simple shear flow reduces to r = µ1 (du/dz)n, where r is the shear stress, µ1 is the consistency index, du/dz is the shear rate, and n is the flow behavior index. In this paper the r versus du/dz relation is studied by running experiments with 14 mm dry glass spheres in a conveyor-belt flume. A comparison of the estimated r with the measured du/dz …
Topographic Effects On Stormflow Acidity, David Wolock
Topographic Effects On Stormflow Acidity, David Wolock
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
This paper describes the theoretical and observed effects of topography on stormflow acidity in upland, forested watersheds. The theoretical effects were determined by a sensitivity analysis using the hydrologic model TOPMODEL. The observed effects were determined by an analysis of topographic and stormflow acidity data collected from eight watersheds in Wales, Great Britain. Results of the analyses indicated that the observed effects of topography were consistent with the theoretical expectations; that is, topography has an important effect on flow path, and that flow path, in turn, has an effect on stormflow acidity.
Network Applications Of The Usgs Branch Model, Raymond W. Schaffranek
Network Applications Of The Usgs Branch Model, Raymond W. Schaffranek
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Applications of a numerical model for simulating unsteady flow in dendritic or interconnected open-channel networks are presented to demonstrate the model's potential for addressing environmental problems and formulating engineering decisions in water-resources investigations. The model is computationally robust and readily adaptable to a broad spectrum of hydraulic conditions and open-channel configurations. The four-point, implicit, finite difference model has been implemented on numerous open-channel reaches and networks in support of various water-resources investigations conducted within the U.S. Geological Survey. In this paper, network applications of the model to a residential canal system in Cape Coral, Florida; to a distributary system of …
Modeling Flow And Flood-Plain Storage In A Tidally Affected River, A. G. Strickland, Jerad D. Bales
Modeling Flow And Flood-Plain Storage In A Tidally Affected River, A. G. Strickland, Jerad D. Bales
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
A one-dimensional, unsteady-flow model was calibrated, validated, and tested for a 30.4-mile reach of the tidally affected Roanoke River, North Carolina. The model includes a storage reservoir to represent the two-dimensional processes associated with flood-plain storage and release in the one-dimensional flow model. Simulated and measured water levels differed by less than 0.5 foot, and the average absolute difference between simulated and measured flows was 7 percent.
Incorporating Hydraulic Structures In An Open-Channel Model, Eric D. Swain
Incorporating Hydraulic Structures In An Open-Channel Model, Eric D. Swain
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The open-channel flow model, BRANCH, is a routinely used numerical tool for modeling rivers, canals, and waterway networks. Although a simplified hydraulic structure representation is included in the model, no universal subroutine that can represent hydraulic structures by their rating curve equations has been included in the BRANCH model.
Accordingly, a subroutine has been developed that specifies flow through a structure by a stage-discharge relation. The structure flow equation is used to generate coefficients in the solution matrix that represent the structure in the same computational format as the open-channel flow equations. Field applications have shown that this new subroutine …
