The Effect Of Tourniquet Application On Systemic Coagulation, Christa Choate Hudalla

Seven orthopedic surgery patients requiring the use of a tourniquet were studied. The hypothesis stated that tourniquet application does not affect coagulation. A total of 5 blood samples were drawn perioperatively (preoperative, 5 minutes after induction of anesthesia, 30 minutes after tourniquet inflation, 2 - 5 minutes after tourniquet deflation, and 30 minutes after tourniquet deflation. For each sample, TEG parameters (R, R + k, MA and α) were measured.

The value for each TEG parameter was compared by analysis of variance (ANOVA), then the samples were contrasted and examined by repeated measures ANOVA. None of the TEG parameters showed …

This article addresses proof in both science and law. Both disciplines utilize proof of facts and proof of theories, but for different purposes and, consequently, in different ways. Some similarities exist, however, in how both disciplines use a series of premises followed by a conclusion to form an argument, and thus constitute a logic. This article analyzes the ways in which legal logic and scientific logic differ. Finding facts in law involves the same logic but quite different procedures than scientific fact-finding. Finding, or rather constructing, the law is also very different from scientific theorizing. But such differences do not …

There are legitimate historical reasons for speaking seriously about a civil law heritage in Louisiana. French and Spanish civilian influences permeated the Louisiana Civil Code when it was first enacted in 1808. The current status of the civil law in Louisiana, however, is problematic; the American common law methodology has made significant inroads into the operation of the current legal system. Separated from its parenting source by geography, time, and culture, Louisiana civil law has become an ill-defined civilian entity that, in reality, is more of a common law process with civil law trappings. Project teams are rapidly becoming the primary mechanisms for innovation and change in modern organizations. As such, they are designed to capitalize on leadership and integrated cross-functional teamwork and to negate subordination and individual gamesmanship. Unfortunately, research on cross-functional project teams is scarce and largely atheoretical. The increasing use of these project teams by modern organizations, however, calls for theory development in this area. In the present paper, self-management and team-making models are applied to cross-functional project designs to develop a theoretical framework for the investigation of teamwork effectiveness for integrated cross-functional project teams. Perceptions Of An Innovative Climate: Examining The Role Of Divisional Affiliation, Work Group Interaction, And Leader/Subordinate Exchange, Kenneth Dunegan, Pamela S. Tierney, Dennis Duchon

Results from a cross-sectional field study with 198 members of an international chemical company suggest that divisional affiliation, work group interactions (WGX), and the quality of exchange between leader and subordinate (LMX) significantly predict employee perceptions of climate factors believed to foster innovative activities. Tests also indicate that LMX remains a significant predictor of five of the six climate variables measured, even after controlling for divisional affiliation and the quality of work group exchanges (WGX). Further, analyses reveal that the interaction between WGX and LMX accounts for significant and unique variance on all six of the climate factors studied in …

Aerial and overhead center-pivot irrigation system (chemigated) applications of chlorpyrifos 4 emulsifiable concentrate (EC) and fenvalerate 2.4EC significantly reduced numbers of first- and second-generation European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis Hubner, larvae in field corn, Zea mays L. The number of first-generation O. nubilalis larvae, pupae, or cavities per plant in plots chemigated with chlorpyrifos in 1984 was significantly less than in plots where chlorpyrifos was applied aerially. A similar trend was observed for fenvalerate in 1985. No significant differences among application methods were observed for second-generation O. nubilalis treatments. Chlorpyrifos and fenvalerate were effective O. nubilalis control agents but efficacy …

Various arthropods and nematodes cause damage to oat (Avena sativa L. and A. byzantina K. Koch.) plants throughout their life. No stage is free from damage. Crops can be affected from the seedling stage until the grain is harvested. Pests of oat are either polyphagous (damaging a wide range of plants) or oligophagous (feeding on only a few plant species). Few, if any pests, are truly specific to oat crops.

The presence of various pest species in oat fields does not necessarily imply that yield reduction will result. Hundreds of arthropod species feed on oat cultivated in the USA …

Dynatapp Dynamic Timing Analysis With Partial Path Activation In Sequential Circuits, Prathima Agrawal, Vishwani Agrawal, Sharad C. Seth

This paper gives a method of finding all sensitizable paths in a non-scan synchronous sequential circuit. Path activation conditions of the circuit are mapped onto a single stuck type fault by adding a few modeling gates to the netlist. Only if the corresponding stuck type fault is found detectable by a sequential circuit test generator is the path considered sensitizable. A depth-first analysis of circuit topology, that determines all paths between primary inputs, primary outputs and flip-flops, employs a partial path hierarchy. Thus, all paths with a common unsensitizable segment need not be examined separately. Results on benchmark circuits show …

This paper presents a switch-level test generation system for synchronous sequential circuits in which a new algorithm for switch-level test generation and an existing fault simulator are integrated. For test generation, a switch-level circuit is modeled as a logic network that correctly models all aspects of switch-level behavior. The time-frame based algorithm uses asynchronous processing within each clock phase to achieve stability in the circuit, and synchronous processing between clock phases to model the passage of time. Upper Cretaceous Nannofossils From Leg 120, Kerguelen Plateau, Southern Ocean, David K. Watkins

Drilling on the Kerguelen Plateau during Leg 120 cored the most complete, best preserved record of the Late Cretaceous of the Southern Ocean to date. Two calcareous pelagic sedimentary sections (Sites 747 and 750) provide a record from the upper Turonian(?)-lower Coniacian through the Maestrichtian. Two major disconformities interrupt the record: upper Coniacian-lower Santonian and mid-Campanian. Site 748 contains a Campanian-Maestrichtian record of neritic sedimentation dominated by nannofossil-bearing, intermittently silicified, glauconitic bioclastic grainstones to wackestones. Parts of the upper Maestrichtian and the mid-Campanian are absent at this site.

A set of 21 biostratigraphic events were used to correlate these sections. …

Alloisoleucine/isoleucine (aIle/Ile) ratios obtained from fossil mollusc shells collected at localities in southwestern Ohio and southeastern Indiana, where they occur in silt beds associated with the Whitewater and Fairhaven tills, indicate a pre-Wisconsinan age for these tills, which had previously been thought to be early or middle Wisconsinan.

The aIle/Ile ratios in shells from beneath the buried soil (Sidney soil) and till exposed near Sidney, Ohio, are most similar to values in shells obtained from Illinoian sediments at Clough Creek in Hamilton County, Ohio; Mechanicsburg southwest, Illinois; and Trousdale Mine in Vermillion Co., Indiana. Categorizing Professional Discourse: Engineering, Administrative, And Technical/Professional Writing, Barbara Couture

Rhetorical categories can and should be developed by scholars of professional writing to identify how values held within professions constrain the ways discourse is interpreted in organizational settings. Empirical research (conducted by the author and others), discourse theory, and pedagogical practice in professional writing strongly suggest that at least three categories of professional writing exist: engineering, administrative, and technical/professional writing. The author demonstrates this claim and distinguishes the characteristics of these three categories. Engineering writing is shown to respond to professional values of scientific objectivity and professional judgment as well as to corporate interests. Administrative writing reflects the locus of …

4Q364 and 365, part of the group of compositions (4Q364, 365, 366 and 367) provisionally entitled 4Q Pentateuchal Paraphrases, are part of the lot of Qumran manuscripts originally assigned to John Strugnell for publication. Strugnell, in 1989, asked me to join my colleague, Professor Emanuel Tov of the Hebrew University, in preparing these manuscripts for publication. This paper serves as an introduction and first statement on these manuscripts.

Managerial Communication Practices In Chinese Factories: A Preliminary Investigation, Kathleen J. Krone, Mary Garrett, Ling Chen

This paper presents the results of a preliminary study of selected managerial communication practices in Chinese factories. Members of a delegation of Chinese managers visiting the United States were interviewed to explore: (a) the extent to which Chinese factories conform to a bureaucratic model of organization, and (b) factory director communication within these organization. Of particular interest were their upward and downward communication practices, and their methods for persuading and motivating workers and managing conflicts with problem employees.
