Determinants Of A Firm's Approach To Accounting For Goodwill, Christine E. Taylor
Determinants Of A Firm's Approach To Accounting For Goodwill, Christine E. Taylor
Theses : Honours
The purpose of this study is to ascertain factors that may explain an Australian firm's approach to accounting for goodwill and to examine the diversity that existed in accounting for goodwill in the pre-standard era. Utilising a costly contracting framework, determinants of the accounting policy choice are proposed and three separate groups of hypotheses are formulated. The ex ante hypothesis in this study utilises industry as an explanatory variable that would be expected to explain the motivations of accounting choices by firms. It was found that there is no significant association between industry classification and the choice of method in …

Consumer Attitudes Toward The Advertising Of Professional Services By Accountants, Lawyers, And Physicians, In Perth, Western Australia: An Exploratory Study, Damien W. Millen
Theses : Honours
The accounting, law and medical professions in Australia have resisted using advertising as part of a marketing strategy until the late 1980's. Unlike their colleagues in the United States, the majority of professionals in Australia have yet to explore the benefits of utilising advertising to develop and maintain a high quality reputation, as well as informing potential clientele of available services and other necessary information that customers may use to select a professional practitioner. It is the aim of this research to investigate consumer attitudes toward accountants, lawyers, and physicians with respect to professional service advertising in Perth, Western Australia. …
The Marketing Orientation Of The West Australian Wine Industry, Michael J. Stansby
The Marketing Orientation Of The West Australian Wine Industry, Michael J. Stansby
Theses : Honours
Marketing academics and practitioners have been studying the effects of marketing orientation on the level business performance for many years. To date, there has been little effort to develop a valid measure of marketing orientation, and analyse its impact on business performance. Because of the lack of such a measure, companies possess no specific guidelines how they may become more marketing orientated. This study presents a valid measure of marketing orientation and analyses its effect on business performance. A conceptual model for marketing orientation is presented. This model comprises of four components: customer orientation; competitor orientation; interfunctional coordination; and long-term …

The Effect Of Word Processing On The Revising/Editing Strategies Of Primary Esl Writers, L. John Oliver
Theses : Honours
The focus of this study was on the effect of word processing on the revising and editing strategies of primary ESL writers. Six year 5/6 'intensive' ESL students completed a number of written tasks, using both computer and conventional 'pen and paper' methods. Their handwritten and word processed work was analysed and compared in terms of the frequency, nature and extent of changes made. Statistical analysis of these data, as well as audio-taped verbal protocols, interviews, and observational notes, was used to determine the effect(s) of word processing on the revising/editing strategies of these students. Of the four major revision …

They were also asked to identify the causes of spelling difficulty. Staff at the local district offices and the Ministry of Education were interviewed to establish what support services were available for teachers who wished to …
The Use Of Self Blood Glucose Monitoring And Its Relationship To Effective Management For People With Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, Maureen Unsworth
The Use Of Self Blood Glucose Monitoring And Its Relationship To Effective Management For People With Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, Maureen Unsworth
Theses : Honours
It is believed that people who effectively self manage their own diabetes will achieve higher levels of health and well being (Pender, 1987). Although diabetes education has increased rapidly in the last 10 years, the emphasis has been placed on increasing people's knowledge of diabetes as a medical condition, which does not necessarily ensure effective self management of diabetes. Previous research suggests that self blood glucose monitoring (SBOM) is an effective tool for promoting the use of blood glucose levels as a basis for initiating behaviour changes related to eating, exercise and insulin dosage. Yet, while most people with diabetes …
The Effects Of Gender And Prior Computing Experience On Computer Use And Attitudes To Computers In Pre-Primary Schools, Helen Blackley
The Effects Of Gender And Prior Computing Experience On Computer Use And Attitudes To Computers In Pre-Primary Schools, Helen Blackley
Theses : Honours
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of gender and prior computing experience on the attitudes of pre-primary age children to computers, and the extent and nature of their use of computers. The study involved 46 five-year old children from two pre-.primary schools in the Perth metropolitan area. The method incorporated three data-gathering approaches characteristic of the 'descriptive' method of research "- observation of the children; interviewing the children; and parental questionnaire. The major finding of the study concluded that, in this instance, gender and prior exposure to computers were not factors affecting pre-primary children's use of …
Factors In The Non-Recognition Of Overseas Qualifications: The Case Of Medical Practitioners, Christine V. Farag
Factors In The Non-Recognition Of Overseas Qualifications: The Case Of Medical Practitioners, Christine V. Farag
Theses : Honours
The overseas qualified doctor is a potential threat to the state-sanctioned control practising doctors have over medical knowledge in Australia. The nonrecognition of qualifications of many migrant and refugee doctors, in particular from non-English speaking background (NESB) countries, presses them into a subordinate relationship lo that of registered practitioners. The ownership of medical knowledge is limited lo state-recognised practitioners, thus allowing them to maintain significant economic and social advantage within the general community. The relationship between qualified practitioners and the state is indicative of a particular dynamic in which some individuals are able to exclude others by mechanisms of social …

A Review Of The Credit Application And Assessment Process From A Consumer Perspective, Natalie Dall
Theses : Honours
It has been noted by the consumer Credit Legal Service in Western Australia that there has been considerable debate about the lending practices of financial institutions. It is argued by many Financial Counsellors that lending practices, such as the assessment of using credit scoring, may contribute credit to the worthiness increasing number of consumers who are overcommitted. The Consumer Credit Legal Service has suggested that there is a need to seek information about the lending practices in Western Australia. The study reviewed the current credit application and assessment process that operates in Western Australia using a case study approach. The …

An Investigation Of Ibm Pc Computer Viruses Infection Rates And Types In A Western Australian Environment, Boon Guan Lee
Theses : Honours
In recent years computer viruses have become increasingly significant as a form of computer abuse. By virtue of their reproductive capability, computer viruses can have cumulative and potentially catastrophic effects to the many people who use those affected computers. There is a growing concern in the computing community about these forms of electronic vandalism. This concern arises from the possible damage to stored information on which the work depends and the ensuing disruption of the work-place. Although the vandalism or purposeful abuse by introducing computer viruses to computer systems was originally mainly an American experience, research reports published by the …
Heterogeneous Macromolecular Composition Of Renal Basement Membranes In Health, Diabetes And Glomerulonephritis, Douglas K. Brees
Heterogeneous Macromolecular Composition Of Renal Basement Membranes In Health, Diabetes And Glomerulonephritis, Douglas K. Brees
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Although basement membranes are ubiquitous structures throughout the body, basement membranes have distinct compositions that are specific to their location. This basement membrane heterogeneity may, in part, reflect functional differences among various basement membranes. We examined basement membrane heterogeneity in normal, healthy mouse kidneys to assess the similarities and differences between glomerular and tubular basement membrane composition. It was demonstrated that mouse glomerular and tubular basement membrane share similar compositions but differ with respect to specific amounts of some components. In diabetes mellitus and passive Heymann nephritis (PHN), damage to the glomerular barrier occurs and is accompanied by an increase …

Academic Success In The Basic Course: The Influence Of Apprehension And Demographics, Charles A. Lubbers, Diane Atkinson Gorcyca
Basic Communication Course Annual
This investigation sought to empirically test the existence of a causal relationship between communication apprehension and academic success in the basic communication course. Will prior experience in communication courses and prior experience in extracurricular communication activities such as debate, forensics and theater, affect the level of communication apprehension as reported by students enrolled in a basic communication course? Additionally, this research sought to determine the impact of several demographic variables on both communication apprehension and final grade in the basic communication course.
Basic Public Speaking Principles: An Examination Of Twelve Popular Texts, Jon A. Hess, Judy C. Pearson
Basic Public Speaking Principles: An Examination Of Twelve Popular Texts, Jon A. Hess, Judy C. Pearson
Basic Communication Course Annual
The importance of the basic course is reflected in the number of published articles focused on it. Aside from having an annually published journal (The Basic Communication Course Annual) devoted to it, articles concerning the basic course are sprinkled throughout many of the discipline's journals. However, Schneider (1991) pointed out that few studies have focused on the textbooks used. Since the textbook is generally the foundation upon which the course is built, it is an important object of study.
Although the term basic course may be used to identify a variety of courses (such as public speaking, interpersonal communication, hybrid …

Evaluation Of A Basic Communication Course, Wendy S. Zabava Ford, Andrew D. Wolvin
Basic Communication Course Annual
This study addressed the effects of a basic communication course on students' perceptions of their communication skills. Students enrolled in a basic course were asked via a pre- and post- course questionnaire to assess changes in their perceptions of their communication skills. An analysis of the questionnaire results revealed that the basic course did have a positive effect on students' perceptions of their communication skills, particularly in presentation and interviewing skills, and on their comfort in communicating. The results also illustrate that the effects on communication skills were stronger in those areas (especially public speaking) where students perceived the greatest …
Critical Thinking Is/As Communication, Warren Sandmann
Critical Thinking Is/As Communication, Warren Sandmann
Basic Communication Course Annual
This essay argues for the place of critical thinking in the basic communication course. Included in the argument is a discussion and critique of traditional modes of critical thinking, an analysis of an alternative approach to critical thinking, the grounding of this alternative approach in a classical communication model, a discussion of why the basic course in communication is the most appropriate home for the teaching of critical thinking, and a sample approach to teaching critical thinking in the basic course.
Video-Modeling And Pre-Performance Apprehension: Is Ignorance Bliss?, Craig Newburger, Michael Hemphill
Video-Modeling And Pre-Performance Apprehension: Is Ignorance Bliss?, Craig Newburger, Michael Hemphill
Basic Communication Course Annual
This research examined the impact of video-modeling on basic communication course students' public speaking apprehension. Students were confronted with successful and unsuccessful video model presentations of their first public speaking assignment. The viewing of the video models preceded in-class live performances. Results indicate that students who were confronted with both of the video models experienced increased public speaking apprehension, while students who viewed neither video model did not.
Directing The Basic Communication Course: Eighteen Years Later, Richard L. Weaver Ii, Howard W. Cotrell
Directing The Basic Communication Course: Eighteen Years Later, Richard L. Weaver Ii, Howard W. Cotrell
Basic Communication Course Annual
We focused on three problems that evolve over time for veteran basic course directors. After briefly commenting on the state of basic course literature, we discuss dealing with tradition, motivating students for the long term, and maintaining our own motivation for the course — three areas quite distinct from those addressed in an earlier article. The ideas and issues discussed here have arisen as a result of eighteen years of directing a basic communication course.
To Say Or Not; To Do Or Not — Those Are The Questions: Sexual Harassment And The Basic Course Instructor, Mary M. Gill, William J. Wardrope
To Say Or Not; To Do Or Not — Those Are The Questions: Sexual Harassment And The Basic Course Instructor, Mary M. Gill, William J. Wardrope
Basic Communication Course Annual
Although men and women may be the victims of sexual harassment, the majority of women will experience harassment in the classroom and/or on the job. Harassment in the classroom occurs often out of ignorance of knowing what constitutes harassing behaviors. Those feeling harassed often are not the only victims in these situations. Many "victims" of harassment are the inexperienced instructor or graduate assistant who realize too late that their well-intended actions have been received differently. The specific parameters of what constitutes harassing behaviors and its prevalence are examined. A training module is offered which presents guidelines for the basic course …
Be Relevant, Careful, And Appropriate: Scary Advice On The Use Of Humor To The Novice Public Speaker, Judythe A. Isserlis
Be Relevant, Careful, And Appropriate: Scary Advice On The Use Of Humor To The Novice Public Speaker, Judythe A. Isserlis
Basic Communication Course Annual
Most contemporary public speaking texts contain some reference to the effective use of humor by public speakers. This advice tends to reflect common assumptions on the role of humor in public speaking and the ability of the novice speaker to incorporate humor in a speech. A review of 27 contemporary texts explores the trend in humor instruction and offers 11 categories which summarize the treatment of humor: (1) theories of humor, (2) rationale for the use of humor, (3) guidelines for the use of humor, (4) sources of humor, (5) humor as a factor of attention, (6) specific humorous techniques …
The Introduction Of A Speech: Do Good Introductions Predict A Good Speech?, Valerie A. Whitecap
The Introduction Of A Speech: Do Good Introductions Predict A Good Speech?, Valerie A. Whitecap
Basic Communication Course Annual
Can the introduction predict the success or failure of the speech? Does anything predict a successful speech? First, textbooks were examined to see what is being taught about introductions. Then the results of the first speeches given by freshmen and sophomores in a hybrid communication course were studied to see if successful introductions predicted successful speeches. Finally, some other predictors to speech success are discussed, including public speaking experience and the verbality of the student's chosen major.
This comparison of the introduction of the speech and the subsequent grade on the speech was done as a preliminary "think piece," so …
The Use Of Role Models In Teaching Public Speaking, Lauren A. Vicker
The Use Of Role Models In Teaching Public Speaking, Lauren A. Vicker
Basic Communication Course Annual
This study investigated the use of role models as an instructional strategy in public speaking classes. The subjects in this study were 24 college students in two communication classes. One group viewed a videotape of seven informative speeches given by upper-division speech students and representing a range of ability. The other group did not view the video. Both groups were videotaped presenting their own speeches, and these speeches were rated by a group of senior speech majors at another college. Means of the ratings for each speaker were analyzed using a two-sample t-test. Results did not support the hypothesis that …
