One-Sided Refinements Of The Strong Law Of Large Numbers And The Glivenko-Cantelli Theorem, David Gilat, Theodore P. Hill Jan 1992

One-Sided Refinements Of The Strong Law Of Large Numbers And The Glivenko-Cantelli Theorem, David Gilat, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

A one-sided refinement of the strong law of large numbers is found for which the partial weighted sums not only converge almost surely to the expected value, but also the convergence is such that eventually the partial sums all exceed the expected value. The new weights are distribution-free, depending only on the relative ranks of the observations. A similar refinement of the Glivenko-Cantelli theorem is obtained, in which a new empirical distribution function not only has the usual uniformly almost-sure convergence property of the classical empirical distribution function, but also has the property that all its quantiles converge almost surely. …

The Effects Of Railroad Deregulation, Patrick H. Murphy Jan 1992

The Effects Of Railroad Deregulation, Patrick H. Murphy

Theses

This thesis focuses on the hypothetical question: Would American railroads meet their obligation to provide freight service at reasonable cost if no regulation restrictions were imposed?

Railroads were originally regarded as great industrial giants spearheading the development of this country . Wild West movies depicted men driving a golden spike where the railroad from the West met the railroad from the East. This was pictured as a very exciting and romantic time in our history.

However, there were too many abuses. In 1887, the Congress decided to control special rates, the pass system, rebates and discrimination, and passed into law …

Quality Circles: "Teaming Up" At The Electric Utilities, Steven W. Mistler Jan 1992

Quality Circles: "Teaming Up" At The Electric Utilities, Steven W. Mistler

Theses

The :focus of this project is the hypothesis that productivity of employees of utilities will improve in terms of increasing quality of their service, while controlling operating costs if they participate in teams involved in the decision-making process.

With the government taking steps to deregulate the sale of electrical energy, electric utilities will be thrown into a competitive market for the first time. Managers will find it necessary to keep quality high, while keeping rates low.

As American industry faced competition from Japan, management began to adapt the programs used by Japan to fit their own organizations. One successful program …

Ageism And Lesbians: An Exploratory Study, Suzanne Murdock-Amant Jan 1992

Ageism And Lesbians: An Exploratory Study, Suzanne Murdock-Amant

Theses

Ageism, not aging, oppresses. Women are oppressed by other women as well as by themselves . This is an exploratory study of the root sources of ageism in the lesbian community, speculating about t he conscious and unconscious motivations around ageism. It is assumed to be clear to all lesbians who have shunned patriarchal notions, build- in negation and diminishing of women, that ageism distracts lesbians from the pursuit of t he essential self, the very identity which lesbianism makes possible.

One old lesbian writes that she thinks it ironic that even in a woman-identified society like the lesbian community, …

Investigation Of A Program That Manages Cultural Diversity To Determine Its Relationship To A Profitable And Efficient Business Operation, Joan M. Hubbard

In the past, managers have achieved high-level mastery over physical production . However, as labor constitutes the greatest single cost component of output, the …

Non-Linear Excitation And Governor Control, Subbarao Venkata Govindaraju Jan 1992

Non-Linear Excitation And Governor Control, Subbarao Venkata Govindaraju

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Modern microprocessor capabilities permit the control designer to consider using relatively complicated nonlinear control algorithms, which would have been considered impractical in the past. This thesis presents the results of a study of the variable structure control and inverse control technique for the design of excitation and governor controllers for a power system. Power systems with a single machine connected to an infinite busbar as well as multimachine systems were considered. Control laws for rotor angle and field flux are derived. The closed loop system is shown to be asymptotically stable. The system can be transferred to a new operating …
