Classical Calculation Of High-Energy Electron Capture In 5-Mev Proton-Hydrogen Collisions, D. R. Schultz, C. O. Reinhold, Ronald E. Olson
Classical Calculation Of High-Energy Electron Capture In 5-Mev Proton-Hydrogen Collisions, D. R. Schultz, C. O. Reinhold, Ronald E. Olson
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The existence of the classical Thomas peak in the angular distribution of projectiles undergoing capture in collisions of 5-MeV protons with atomic hydrogen is explored using the three-body, three-dimensional classical-trajectory Monte Carlo technique. A method that selects only that portion of the initial phase space which yields capture at this energy was developed to make the calculation tractable due to the extremely small cross section. The spectrum obtained displays only a small shoulder near the angle predicted by Thomas on the basis of successive classical binary collisions and the total (integral) cross section is overestimated by a factor of 26 …

The construction of expert systems typically require the availability of expertise that can be modeled. However, there are many important problems where no expertise exists, yet there is a wealth of data indicating results in different situations. Machine learning algorithms attempt to discover rules which capture the regularities that exists in such data.
The Efficacy Of Advance Organizers In Upper Elementary School Curriculum, Jean Hopper
The Efficacy Of Advance Organizers In Upper Elementary School Curriculum, Jean Hopper
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to provide a synthesis and evaluation of research regarding the efficacy of using advance organizers as a pre instructional teaching strategy to enhance students' cognitive growth. Additionally, two sample advance organizers are provided as a model for classroom application, along with caveats for advance organizer construction, presentation and usage. The third component of this study was an evaluation of selected advance organizer studies based on the work of Mayer (1979). The conclusion was that advance organizers do facilitate long term retention and conceptual understanding if prepared and presented properly using language and examples relevant …
A Comparison Of Text And Graphics As Effective User Interfaces In A Proposed Advanced Train Control System, Kenneth A. Organes
A Comparison Of Text And Graphics As Effective User Interfaces In A Proposed Advanced Train Control System, Kenneth A. Organes
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study tested the effectiveness of three screen interface formats for use in a proposed on-board computer to be used as part of an advanced train control system. One of the three formats contained only graphic depictions of the data, one contained only textual representations and the third had a mixture of graphic and textual data.
Twenty-eight subjects with varying railroad experience were recruited for the experiment. They were divided into three groups, each of which was presented with a simulation using one of the three interface types. The simulations depicted possible engine, track and train conditions that might be …
Towards The Integration Of Object-Oriented Constructs Within Structured Query Language (Sql), Paul Francis Rabuck
Towards The Integration Of Object-Oriented Constructs Within Structured Query Language (Sql), Paul Francis Rabuck
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This paper explores the possibility of coupling SQL with a semantic data model. For this study, the primary objective was to build a working prototype of a program that allows a database designer to define data objects and their respective interrelationships using the Object-oriented Semantic Association Model (OSAM*).
The prototype isolates from the designer the low level commands (i.e., CREATE TABLE, CREATE INDEX) which comprise the SQL data definition language (DOL). Once the objects are defined by the designer, the prototype generates the relational database table definitions without the designer having to directly use the SQL DOL.
Simulation Design, Role Identification And Attitude Change In A High Technology Culture, Terry Robert Schumacher
Simulation Design, Role Identification And Attitude Change In A High Technology Culture, Terry Robert Schumacher
Dissertations and Theses
Gaming-simulations (G-S) are those in which participants play roles, make decisions and receive feedback while interacting with a simulation model. This study used attitude change to measure of G-S effectiveness in exploring questions relating simulation design and effectiveness. To define participant attitudes and the content for a simulation, the organizational culture of a software engineering firm was studied using an ethnographic approach. Inconsistencies between the existing culture and expressed ideals were measured using an 40 item attitude questionnaire drawn from statements made during interviews. Simulation structure and participant cognitive style were factors hypothesized to influence identification with a simulation role. …
Probabilistic Determination Of Failure Load Capacity Variations For Lattice Type Structures Based On Yield Strength Variations Including Nonlinear Post-Buckling Member Performance, Leander Anton Bathon
Probabilistic Determination Of Failure Load Capacity Variations For Lattice Type Structures Based On Yield Strength Variations Including Nonlinear Post-Buckling Member Performance, Leander Anton Bathon
Dissertations and Theses
With the attempt to achieve the optimum in analysis and design, the technological global knowledge base grows more and more. Engineers all over the world continuously modify and innovate existing analysis methods and design procedures to perform the same task more efficiently and with better results. In the field of complex structural analysis many researchers pursue this challenging task. The complexity of a lattice type structure is caused by numerous parameters: the nonlinear member performance of the material, the statistical variation of member load capacities, the highly indeterminate structural composition, etc. In order to achieve a simulation approach which represents …

Seasonal Patterns Of Melatonin, Cortisol, And Progesterone Secretion In Female Lambs Raised Beneath A 500-Kv Transmission Line, Jack Monroe Lee Jr.
Dissertations and Theses
There is ongoing controversy about the possibility of adverse biological effects from environmental exposures to electric and magnetic fields. These fields are produced by all electrical equipment and appliances including electrical transmission lines. The objective of this environmental science study was to investigate the possible effects of a high voltage transmission line on domestic sheep (Ovis aries L,), a species that can often be found near such lines. The study was primarily designed to determine whether a specific effect of electric and magnetic fields found in laboratory animals also occurs in livestock under natural environmental conditions. The effect is the …
People, Programs, And Politics: Two Case Studies Of Adult Literacy Classes, Rita Collins
People, Programs, And Politics: Two Case Studies Of Adult Literacy Classes, Rita Collins
Dissertations and Theses
Past research has not sufficiently addressed the question of what types of adult literacy instructional practice are recognized by participants, i.e., students and teachers, as facilitating learning in Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes. The purpose of this study was to describe instructional practices in two urban literacy programs serving low level adult readers, and to identify which practices were effective in meeting student needs. Effectiveness was measured by the ability of students to achieve learning objectives identified by themselves and the teacher, and included attendance patterns and student participation. Quantitative measures of achievement were not used as criteria since few …

A Proposed Paradigm Of Personality As Explored Through The Relationship Between Moral Reasoning And Cognitive Flexibility, Karen I. Madgwick
A Proposed Paradigm Of Personality As Explored Through The Relationship Between Moral Reasoning And Cognitive Flexibility, Karen I. Madgwick
Dissertations
Problem. Personality, a construct representing the dynamic integration of the individual, remains complicated, both in theory and in research. The purpose of this study was to explore a conceptual paradigm of personality through the relationship between cognitive flexibility and moral reasoning. Researchers had not looked at the relationship between cognitive flexibility, as measured by the Stroop Color and Word Test, and moral reasoning, as measured by the Defining Issues Test (DIT). This study focused on the relationship between cognitive flexibility and moral reasoning. It looked for more than an understanding of the relationship, however, thus affording beginning research in the …

The Political Grammar Of Early Constitutional Law, H. Jefferson Powell
The Political Grammar Of Early Constitutional Law, H. Jefferson Powell
Faculty Scholarship
In this Article, Professor H. Jefferson Powell discusses the United States Constitution and the historical era during which it was written and adopted. He analyzes the Constitution not as a set of rules creating and organizing the federal government, but as a document that inspired political debate and the culture out of which our notions and understandings of constitutionalism grew. Professor Powell asserts that the "creation of a shared political and legal language" is perhaps one of the greatest achievements of founding-era Americans. Because deep political disagreement existed at the time, Professor Powell suggests that when we look to the …

The Role Of Adaptation In Archaeological Explanation, Michael J. O'Brien, T. D. Holland
The Role Of Adaptation In Archaeological Explanation, Michael J. O'Brien, T. D. Holland
History Faculty Publications (Archived)
Adaptation, a venerable icon in archaeology, often is afforded the vacuous role of being an ex-post-facto argument used to »explain» the appearance and persistence of traits among prehistoric groups- A position that has seriously impeded development of a selectionist perspective in archaeology. Biological and philosophical definitions of adaptation- A nd by extension, definitions of adaptedness-vary considerably, but all are far removed from those usually employed in archaeology. The prevailing view in biology is that adaptations are features that were shaped by natural selection and that increase the adaptedness of an organism. Thus adaptations are separated from other features that may …

Proteolytic Modification Of The Ca²-Release Mechanism Of Sarcoplasmic Reticulum In Skeletal Muscle, Ute Goerke
Proteolytic Modification Of The Ca²-Release Mechanism Of Sarcoplasmic Reticulum In Skeletal Muscle, Ute Goerke
Dissertations and Theses
Calcium ions are important mediators in the mechanism of contraction and relaxation of muscle fibers. Depolarization of sarcolemma and transverse tubule causes an increase of myoplasmic ca2+ concentration which induces contraction of the myofibrils. In skeletal muscle fibers, the intracellular Ca2+ concentraton is regulated by an extensive membrane system, the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). Ca2+-release from SR is initiated by depolarization of the transverse tubule via a process referred to as excitation-contraction coupling. The Ca2+ - release channel located in the junctional SR plays an important role in this mechanism.
