Perceptions Of Teacher And Student Roles : Views Of Japanese Businessmen, John Walter Armbrust Jan 1992

Perceptions Of Teacher And Student Roles : Views Of Japanese Businessmen, John Walter Armbrust

Dissertations and Theses

Research provides a vast amount of information detailing the learning styles and preferences of learners and the influence of one's culture on that individual's perceptions of the world. Little of that research, however, has been applied to studying the effects of culture on the learner's perceptions of teacher and student roles, specifically in the area of second language learning. What is available often appears in the form of anecdotal descriptions of teaching and learning experiences abroad. A possible reason for the lack of investigation of student views in this area has been the absence of an adequate measuring device with …

Opinions About Sex Offenders' Progress In Therapy, Laren Bays

Dissertations and Theses

Sex offenders are often required by the court to enter therapy and receive help so they can stop deviant sexual behaviors. Mental health professionals must have some means of evaluating a mandated client's progress in therapy, however, there are currently no valid criteria available. A survey form was developed containing 73 items which professionals identified as having possible utility in evaluating progress.

Race, Aggravated Murder, And The Death Sentence In Multnomah County, Oregon, 1984-1990 : A Descriptive Analysis And Review, Patrick Arthur Jolley

Dissertations and Theses

Criminal justice administrators in the United States have been challenged by a highly visible accusation of racial discrimination. This perception has weakened the confidence in, and support of, our judicial process. This study attempted to clarify this perception by examining the effect of race on certain judicial decisions related to the death penalty. The variables chosen for analysis focused on the persons involved in the homicide, the circumstances of the crime, and decisions made during the processing of capital cases.

Adult Student Perceptions Of Traditionally Sex-Typed Toys, Shelly Lynn Jackson Jan 1992

Adult Student Perceptions Of Traditionally Sex-Typed Toys, Shelly Lynn Jackson

Dissertations and Theses

studies have examined children's toy preferences as they relate to sex-role development. However, studies have failed to examine the dimensions of the toys themselves. Because adults purchase the majority of toys children receive, this study sought to determine adult student perceptions of children's traditionally sex-typed toys. Eighty-one participants rated ten selected toys. Multidimensional scaling analysis revealed five underlying dimensions. The five dimensions included Productive Play, Sociability, Structure, Gender, and Age. It was discovered that the Gender dimension was less salient than both the Productive Play and Sociability dimensions. The dimensions pertaining to each toy are discussed.

A Study Of The Narrative Skills In Kindergarten Children With Normal, Impaired, And Late Developing Language Development, Lisa L. Mcfarland Jan 1992

A Study Of The Narrative Skills In Kindergarten Children With Normal, Impaired, And Late Developing Language Development, Lisa L. Mcfarland

Dissertations and Theses

Children's narrative language plays a critical role in guiding the transition between oral language and literacy (Roth & Spekman, 1989; Westby, 1989). Narrative comprehension and production by normally achieving and language delayed school-aged children have been studied. Many of these studies have involved story retellings. Few have studied how spontaneously produced narratives are organized especially by young children.

This qualitative study is introduced through a discussion of peer response groups and the researcher's interest in them. The guiding question of whether peer response groups are as useful for teaching writing ESOL classrooms as in first language classrooms is stated along with supplementary research questions. These are fol lowed by a review of relevant theories and summaries of peer response group hi story, social and cultural factors, and research done on peer response groups in first and additional language classrooms.

We have made an absolute measurement of the Cu K-shell impact ionization cross section by 5.1-GeV electrons, which demonstrates directly a density effect predicted by Fermi in 1940. By determining the ratio of the K x-ray yield from a thin front and back layer of the target by a novel grazing emission method, we have verified the effect of transition radiation on the x-ray production, suggested by Sorensen and reported by Bak et al.

The Tensile Strength Of Liquid Nitrogen, Jian Huang Jan 1992

The Tensile Strength Of Liquid Nitrogen, Jian Huang

Dissertations and Theses

The tensile strength or the negative pressure required to induce cavitation in a pure liquid has been a puzzling subject. On one hand, the classical nucleation theory has met great success in predicting the nucleation rates of superheated liquids. On the other hand, most of reported experimental values of the tensile strength for different liquids are far below the prediction from the classical nucleation theory. In this study, homogeneous nucleation in liquid nitrogen and its tensile strength have been investigated. In order to carry out the measurement of the tensile strength of liquid nitrogen, different approaches for determining the pressure …

A Theory Of Law And Information: Copyright, Spleens, Blackmail, And Insider Trading, James Boyle Jan 1992

A Theory Of Law And Information: Copyright, Spleens, Blackmail, And Insider Trading, James Boyle

Faculty Scholarship

In this Article, Professor Boyle undertakes an analysis of the law's treatment of information across four apparently disparate realms: copyright, genetic information, blackmail, and insider trading. He argues that questions of information regulation, commodification, and access are shaped by two neglected processes of interpretive construction. First, such issues are often decided by pigeonholing them into implicitly contradictory stereotypes of "public" or "private" information. These conflicting stereotypes have their roots in basic assumptions about politics, the market, and privacy in a liberal state. Second, Professor Boyle argues that tension between these stereotypes is often apparently resolved by the use of a …

Sensing The Constitution In ‘Feist’, David L. Lange Jan 1992

Sensing The Constitution In ‘Feist’, David L. Lange

Faculty Scholarship

The United States Supreme Court's decision in 'Feist Publications, Inc. v. Rural Telephone Service Co.' has invited analysis along many lines of inquiry. In most instances, the practitioners and scholars who have considered the case have brought to their work an admirable pragmatism and focus for which one can be grateful. Taking a non-pragmatic approach Professor Lange asks, Is Feist just another in a long series of false starts, missed opportunities, and wrong turns on the road to constitutional harmonization in the field of intellectual property in America? Or is it possible that what makes Feist worthy of the close …

Development And Application Of A Diligence-Ability Regression Model For Explaining And Predicting Competence Among Juniors And Seniors In Selected Michigan High Schools, Hinsdale Bernard

Dissertations

Problem. There has been growing concern that high-school students should be held more responsible fortheir educational results. This study aimed at developing a diligence inventory (DI) to measure the nature and extent of student involvement in their education.

The purpose of the study was to develop the DI and to formulate a multiple-regression equation to predict competence (semester GPA) from diligence and ability (ACT score). It was envisioned that this model could suggest intervention for improved student performance through the diligence component.

Method. Two hundred and thirty-seven high-school juniors and seniors participated in the study. Item analysis and factor analysis …

Student Scheduling, Nathan T. Hardee, William A. Owings, Wayne Wright

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

[First Paragraph] Developing the master schedule and subsequent student schedules is one of the most important administrative tasks of the principal. Ensuring that appropriate courses are offered and that teachers are teaching courses they want to teach can go a long way toward creating a positive climate and an atmosphere where learning occurs. There are three ways in which student schedules can be developed: Computer, arena, and manual. Each approach has its own strengths and weaknesses. Principals must decide which approach is best for the school based on philosophy and available resources.
