Rehabilitation Practice and Science

In order to understand the caring environment of the stroke patients and the utilization, need, demand and congition of the rehabilitation resoures, 225 stroke patients, who admitted to Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital from January 1986 to December 1990, 117 males (52%) and 108 females (48.0%) with the ages from 31 to 89 (mean 63.45 ±10.87) were evaluated by questionaires, telephone and home visit. From the view point of the patients, the rehabilitation resources were insufficient for them in communities (76.4%), and it was one of the main reasons causing loss of follow-up. The patients' cognition of the importance of …

Early Intervention Program For The High-Risk Prematurity, Tsui-Fen Yang, Wen Ling, Woei-Nan Bair, Chih-Chuan Kao, Ling-Yee Cheng, Tao-Chung Hsu, Shu-Jen Chen, Wen-Jen Soong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The survival rate of high-risk premature baby is increasing in recent years because of improvement in medical technology for newborn care. Unfortunately, since many of them were born with one or some risk factors, the incidence to complicate with developmental disability, learning disability, emotional or behavior problems will be higher than general population. We started early intervention program for the prematurity in PICU and SBR in Oct., 1990 especially for those high-risk prematurity who combined with one or more risk factors as below: birth weight less than 1500 gm, gestational age below 32 weeks, ventilator requirment, grade III or IV …

Analysis Of 551 Head Injured Children, Chai-Ling Chen, May-Ken Wong, Yun-Lan Chang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

To investigate the nature of exposure factors, and effectiveness of countermeasures in head injuries in Taiwanese children with head injuries consecutively admitted to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital from Jan. 1985 to Dec. 1989. We analyzed the data by chart review. The analysis confirmed a boy to girl ratio of about 2.3 to 1. The largest number of head injuries was in children under 1 year, 4 to 5 years and more than 15 years of age. The most common place for head injuries to occur was outdoors, with the road contributing the most, while the bedroom was the most common …

Clinical Evaluation Of Patients With Shoulder Pain, Tien-Yow Chuang, Sheau-Ping Pan, Chiao Hsu, Tao-Chang Hsu Dec 1992

Clinical Evaluation Of Patients With Shoulder Pain, Tien-Yow Chuang, Sheau-Ping Pan, Chiao Hsu, Tao-Chang Hsu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The conscious perception of pain that is evoked by a noxious stimulus is a multidimensional process that involves both a subjective evaluation of the sensory aspects of the stimulus (intensity, duration, location) as well as an affective or emotional response to that stimulus. The purpose of this invesigation was to develop a simple, reproducible, systemic measurement to realize the relationship between subjective and objective evaluation. The protocal evaluation includes the following measurement of pain: (1) visual analogue pain scale (2) heat stimulation (3) TENS (4) pressure pain. Twenty-three subjects with shoulder pain due to rotator cuff tendonitis, rotator cuff partial tear …

Ependmoma Of The Cauda Equina, Mei-Yu Wei, Chrong-Sonq Chou, Chinn-Dong Chung, Tao-Chang Hsu Dec 1992

Ependmoma Of The Cauda Equina, Mei-Yu Wei, Chrong-Sonq Chou, Chinn-Dong Chung, Tao-Chang Hsu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Low back pain is a frequent complaint in PM&R OPD. Tumors of the cauda equina play an uncommon but nevertheless important role in the ”sciatic syndrome”. Early detection will lower the risk of neurological sequelae. However, on clinical grounds alone, it is sometimes difficult to differentiate between a cauda equina tumor and a prolapsed interver-tebral disc. Recent advances in imaging techniques had increased the diagnostic rates. This study was based on 6 cases of ependymoma of the cauda equina, collected from January 1986 to May 1992 at VGHTC. Three of them were detected at PM&R OPD. The clinical symptoms, physical …

Modified Fracture Brach For Tibial Fracture With Varus Angulation: A Casereport, Simon F.T. Tang, Tony L.S. Au, Alice M.K. Wong Dec 1992

Modified Fracture Brach For Tibial Fracture With Varus Angulation: A Casereport, Simon F.T. Tang, Tony L.S. Au, Alice M.K. Wong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Sarmiento introduced the functional fracture brace for the management of tibial shaft fracture in 1963. However, tibial angulation with varus deformity may still occur, especially in the presence of an intact fibula. We report here a case of tibial shaft fracture with varus angulation treated with a modified below knee fracture brace. Our modification included a wooden rod embedded in the under-side of the anterior shield with nod positioned laterally between tibia and fibula. Trimming of rod was done for fitting comfortably against the varus angulation. Good bridging callus formation with sound alignment was noted at the twentieth week. The …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Capsular tightening at the shoulder is a common disorder, usually referred to as frozen of cases seen by physiatrist are those in which no specific cause can be determined for the stiffening. It may also be a sequela of other diseases, such as stroke, fracture, malignancy, etc. We present four cases of secondary frozen shoulder without conspicuous etiology. The case 1 and 2 had the underlined malignancy. The case 3 and 4 suffered from fracture of forearm and painful sensation over the shoulder joint due to traffic accident. The first impression was secondary frozen shoulder due to proloned immobilization. However, …

Polyneuropathy In Lithium Intoxication: A Casereport, Yi-Shiung Horng, Chein-Wei Chang, I-Nan Lien

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Intoxication of lithium carbonate may present as a multiple systematic dysfunction, but central and peripheral nervous involvement is rare and more troublesome. In the past, there was only one case of lithium intoxication with polyneuroparhy reported by Chang et al in Taiwan. We report here an additional 49 year-old man with manic-depressive psychosis. He received lithium carbonate medication treatment for 5 years and developed a severe cerebellar dysfunction and a mild sensori-motor polyneuropathy. Blood lithium level was 1.80meq/l two days after quitting lithium. Nerve conduction velocity studied, electromyography and sural nerve biopsy confirmed the peripheral neuropathy with marked evidence of …

Cervical Myelopathy Due To Inadequate Manipulation: Casereport, Yiu-Chung Lau, Yued-Cheng Chen, Chau-Peng Leong, May-Kuen Wong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Manipulation is a classical method used to treat musculo-skeletal soreness and pain with its own indications , but the etiologies of aching pain are versatile. It is extremely dangerous to apply manipulation before adequate diagnosis. This is a report of two cases with injury of cervical cord myelopathy by inadequate manipulation. The first patient was 52 year-old man who suffered form neck and right hand soreness for move than a year. He received manipulation two weeks before this episode. He had a sense of electrical shock during manipulation with numbness and weakness of all the extremities developed gradually after he returned …

Diagnosis And Rehabilitation Of Traumatic Cervical Disc Herniation With Epidural Abscess Resulting In Quadriplegia: A Casereport, Jen-Wen Hung, Baii-Jia Yang Dec 1992

Diagnosis And Rehabilitation Of Traumatic Cervical Disc Herniation With Epidural Abscess Resulting In Quadriplegia: A Casereport, Jen-Wen Hung, Baii-Jia Yang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

This 67 years old, male, DM patient suffered from a falling accident, resulting in traumatic cervical disc herniation with epidural abscess. After discectomy, the patient sustained quadriplegic condition and needed mechanical ventilation due to breathing difficulty. In addition to the usual rehabilitation program, we also used transcutaneous electrical stimulation on this patient's various muscle groups in order to stimulate his muscles and to help his weaning from ventilator. Two months later, the patient's breath was normal, and half year later he could walk with walker. His muscle power was normal one year later. The severity of the neurological lesion and …

Rehabilitation Of A Patient With Diurnally Fluctuating Hereditary Progressive Dystonia- A Casereport, Yung-Ming Lin, May-Kuen Wong, Yu-Yi Chien, Kuo-Yiau Hsiu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Diurnally fluctuating hereditary progressive dystoria is a very rare disorder. In 1975, Segawa regarded this disorder as an entity, and there are 46 cases reported till 1986 since then. The clinical manifestation of this disease are: normal development, early onset, dyotonia, diurnal change, excellent response to L-dopa. In this report, a 21-year-old female, who had had symptoms onset since 8 years old; became wheel chair bound at 15 years of age; was not diagnosed correctly until 20 years old. She received corrective surgery on her bilateral equinocavovarus feet, L-dopa and rehabilitation programs. She was able to walk without any support …

Life At Four Corners: Religion, Gender, And Education In A German-Lutheran Community, 1868–1945, Carol K. Coburn Nov 1992

Life At Four Corners: Religion, Gender, And Education In A German-Lutheran Community, 1868–1945, Carol K. Coburn

Kansas Open Books

Defined less by geography than by demographic character, Block, Kansas, in many ways exemplifies the prevalent yet seldom-scrutinized ethnic, religion-based community of the rural Midwest. Physically small, the town sprang up around four corners formed by crossroads. Spiritually strong and cohesive, it became the educational and cultural center for generations of German-Lutheran families. Block provided a religious and cultural oasis-a welcome transition for German-Lutheran immigrants faced with a new language and unfamiliar customs. Yet the tight bond between an ethnic society and a religion that shunned Americanism and the English language paradoxically slowed the transition and maintained a culturally isolated …

Vcu Voice (1992-11-30)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Progress In Scanning Electron Microscopy Of Frozen-Hydrated Biological Specimens, René Hermann, Martin Müller Nov 1992

Progress In Scanning Electron Microscopy Of Frozen-Hydrated Biological Specimens, René Hermann, Martin Müller

Scanning Microscopy

Modem scanning electron microscopy yields structural information down to 2 to 5 nm from thin, beam transparent biological specimens. This paper examines the possibilities of garnering this level of structural information from bulk, frozen-hydrated samples.

Freeze-fractured, frozen-hydrated yeast cells, frequently taken as a yardstick to monitor progress in low-temperature scanning electron microscopy, have been used to optimize both metal shadowing methods and observation parameters (e.g. accelerating voltage, electron beam irradiation of the specimen).

Uncoated frozen-hydrated yeast cells do not charge electrically at an accelerating voltage of 30 kV. Increasing charging effects are however observed with decreasing accelerating voltages. Very thin …
