Depressed Children In The Classroom, Colleen Burke Nardone
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study was to learn more about the school experience of depressed children. Four dysthymic fifth grade students were observed in their special education classroom, and three of them were also observed in a day-treatment program to learn about them and their perceptions of their school experience. Findings revealed a pervasive pattern of limited expression of feelings and questionable integration of their social skills curriculum into their lives. The conditions under which they lived outside of school raised questions as to whether they were appropriately labeled emotionally disturbed and whether it is desirable to require a …

Lecture Vs. Discussion In Teaching Biology For Tenth Grade Students In Saudi Arabia, Sultana Kaseem Ai-Faleh
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The primary purpose of this study was to determine if there were any significant differences between lecture and discussion methods with regard to students' learning achievement. There were three null hypotheses addressed by this study. Null hypothesis I was: there was no significant difference in the students' learning achievement with respect to either lecture or discussion methods. Null hypothesis II was: there was no significant difference between the students' pre-test scores and post-test scores. Null hypothesis III was: there were no differences in the students satisfaction with respect to the two teaching methods. Three teachers and 151 students in six …

The report "depicts what alerts are in the context of the Parkfield Earthquake Prediction Experiment and the unfolding of events surrounding the first Parkfield A-level alert. The purpose of researching the alert and the methods used to investigate this phenomenon are then presented. Results from interviews and observations acquired from social research on the alert and the derived findings complete this report."

In areas with rapidly changing loads of large magnitude, utility companies often experience large deviations in frequency and area control error. Inadvertent tie-line power flow also occurs. The purpose of this research is to examine the effects a large scale energy storage device has on the system response to a rapidly changing load. Two control areas connected by a tie-line are modelled and simulations are performed to determine the response to a step change in load and also to a five-stand rolling mill load. The selection of an embedding scheme is an important step in the modeling and prediction of chaotic dynamical systems. Theoretical work in embedding selection abounds in the literature. However in neural network research, mostly compute intensive methods for embedding selection exist. In this paper, we propose a novel embedding selection scheme based on cluster analysis. A neural network implementing this method is described and demonstrated on the Mackey- Glass chaotic time series. The result of the method agrees with the embedding schemes used by researchers in neural networks. In addition, other new embedding schemes have been Found and they also …

An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) Module has been designed having capabilities of onboard supervised backpropagation learning. Several modules are comected through an error detection scheme. The Artificial Neural Network Module is a three-layered network comprising twenty-four digital nodes that can be fully connected. The module allows full user configurable options of connections between nodes in adjacent layers, ,activation or deactivation of any node, learning high precision floating point user specified input initial weights, and user choice of linear or nonlinear activation hnction for the input, hidden, and output nodes. Electric utilities, by encouraging the use of high efficiency heat pumps, have increased the amount of power electronics in the residential sector. This report examines the impact that an adjustable speed drive heat pump has on the electric distribution transformer. Using a PSpice model of the components and ANSIDEEE Recommended Standard C57.1 10-1986, the transformer capability to supply a nonsinusoidal load current to the residence is established.

The simulation method is used to obtain approximate solutions to operations planning problems. Its power comes from the ability to model complex systems effectively. This property makes simulation preferable in practice over programming methods which provide exact solutions but are limited in the range of problems they can be applied. Flexibility of simulation modeling is desirable especially in resource constrained operations planning problems. When internal decision mechanisms like heuristic methods are added to the scope of simulation, performance can be enhanced significantly.
