Mott Electron Polarimetry, Timothy James Gay, F. B. Dunning

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electron polarimeters based on Mott scattering are extensively used in atomic and molecular, solid state, nuclear, and high-energy physics. This use stems from the increasing realization that much additional information concerning many physical processes can be obtained through spin-dependent measurements. In this review we discuss the basic physics and application of Mott polarimetry. A number of different Mott polarimeter designs are described that illustrate the wide range of operating energies (10 eV-1 MeV) and geometries that can be used in such instruments. Inhomogeneous Boundary Effects In Semiconductor Quantum Wires, G. Y. Hu, R. F. O'Connell

Boundary effects play an essential role in determining the physical properties of semiconductor quantum wires. Additional features come into play when one considers inhomogeneous boundaries, i.e. wires whose widths are functions of distance along the length of the wire. The authors show that, in the adiabatic approximation (which assumes that the boundary potential fluctuation effects, or equivalently, the variations in the wire width, occur on a scale much larger than the inverse of Fermi wavelength), the boundary problem for a quantum wire is equivalent to a one-dimensional Schrodinger equation along the wire with: (i) an effective potential provided by the …

Interest Group Influence On U.S. Congressional Committees: A Case Study Of The United States-Canada Free Trade Agreement, Laurel L. Hoffman

Masters Theses

The impact of special interests on Congress has long been a matter for concern. A content analysis of testimony presented at 14 Congressional committee hearings on the United States-Canada Free Trade Agreement revealed that three broad categories of witnesses participated: business, government, and non-business. Total testimony for business and government were comparable, while non-business had fewer witnesses and less testimony. Government supplied more testimony in oral form, which was interpreted as a higher degree of participation than written testimony, predominantly supplied by business. There was little evidence of lobbying coalitions as measured by crossreferencing; witnesses rarely referred to anything but …

In an award-winning series of Houston Chronicle articles, reporter Nancy Stancill uncovered shocking conditions in Texas nursing homes. However, reforms were not implemented until 20/20, following Stancill's lead, conducted a three-month, undercover investigation of the treatment of elderly residents at Texas state and private nursing home facilities.

By employing subterfuge to gather news, the 20/20 reporters enhanced the immediacy and credibility of the resulting story. As one journalist argued, "[J]ust describing the conditions wouldn't have cut it. They had to be seen."

Calculation Of The Residual Resistivity And The Thermoelectric Power Of Sp Impurities In Silver, Thomas Vojta, Ingrid Mertig, Rudolf Zeller

We present ab initio calculations for the residual resistivity and the thermopower of sp impurities in silver. The calculations are based on density-functional theory and the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Greens-function method. The linearized Boltzmann equation is solved by means of a Fermi-surface harmonic expansion to calculate the residual resistivity, taking into account the anisotropic electronic properties of the dilute alloy. The thermoelectric power was obtained from the energy dependence of the residual resistivity by means of Mott's formula. The results are in satisfying agreement with highly precise experimental results and confirm experimentally obtained deviations from a quadratic dependence on the valence difference …

This study focused on ninth grade students attending school in two grade organization patterns, 7 through 9 and 9 through 12. Students' satisfaction levels with school as measured by the NASSP Student Satisfaction Survey and students' self-esteem measures on the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory were assessed to determine whether a relationship between grade organization, gender, satisfaction with school, and self-esteem existed. Ninth graders from one upper midwest community who attended a four-year high school (N=317) or a 7 through 9 junior high school

Findings revealed that both schools scored within the average range on all subscales of the Student Satisfaction Survey. …

The determination of a death-row inmate's competency to be executed is a compelling ethical issue for mental health professionals. It has been suggested that forensic psychologists who offer such services to the courts may tend to approach the problem of determining competency by diverse and unstandardized methods (Grisson, 1986). Heilbrun (1986) has questioned the effect of the psychologist's potential death penalty bias on the outcome of the evaluation process.

The Sacred Hoop: The Hero And Community In Selected Works Of Mari Sandoz, Diane Drake

This study explores the theme of the hero and community in the works of Mari Sandoz. The hypothesis is that Sandoz believed in the concept of a world community so that her works are centered around the hero as community builder. Using the Lakota concept of the sacred hoop as the controlling metaphor for the study, I have asserted that Sandoz has illustrated in her novels, biographies, and histories that true heroes try to build and maintain the sacred hoop of community, but their efforts are continually thwarted by the weaknesses in themselves and society.

The Effects Of Chronic Migraine And Tension Headache On Neuropsychological Functioning, Kerri J. Lamberty

The present study was designed to examine possible neuropsychological deficits in migraine and tension headache subjects. Past research has been inconclusive, with some studies indicating that chronic migraine headache sufferers do exhibit some neuropsychological deficits such as short-term memory difficulties, gross motor slowing, and verbal memory deficits, while other studies have indicated that no deficits are seen in this group Also examined were headache precipitant and headache-related behaviors that these groups partake in when experiencing headache pain. Past research has suggested that migraine headache sufferers tend to deal with their headache pain differently than tension headache sufferers.
