The purpose of this study was to determine if matching student learning style and teacher teaching style w ill result in any difference in achievement of students in the classroom as measured by the number of students receiving credit in ninth-grade world history classes.

The study was conducted in a mid-size Macomb County, Michigan, school district. Two hundred fifteen ninth-grade students and four teachers participated in this study. World history classes were used because of their heterogeneous grouping and because i t was a required ninth-grade class.

This historical analysis sought to determine the types of power utilized by Florence Nightingale while providing leadership to major reforms and how these power acts were implemented- The scope of the study was her productive post- Crimean years from 1856 through 1872. Events which were examined included the reform of the health of the British Army including the Royal Commission, the establishment of modem, secular nursing education and the establishment of public health standards in India during British colonization.

The power acts were examined relative to the constituents of power defined by Dahl (1957). The source of power contained subsets …

In mid-1991 the St. Petersburg Times asked interested readers to submit their reminiscences of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and America's official entry into World War II. On December 4, 1991, the Times published a commemorative section which included many of these submissions. Three days later, Americans somberly observed the fiftieth anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. After publishing this special section, the Times donated this collection to Nelson Poynter Memorial Library for present and future scholarship.

Sociolinguistic Dimensions Of Nurse Practitioner Practice: A Question Of Power, Merrily J. Allen Dnsc, Mn, Rn

Ethnographic methods were used to examine the sociolinguistic dimensions of female nurse practitioner interactions with female patients. The purpose was to provide a contextual account of the discursive practices used by the nurse practitioners during routine office visits with female patients. Direction for this research was provided by my concern about power inherent in professional-client dyadic relationships. Data collection methods included formal and informal interviews, participant observation and audio taping nurse-patient encounters. Nine nurse practitioners and 26 patients participated in the study in both private and public ambulatory care settings. Data analysis yielded two concurrent story lines which I labeled …

This study used acoustic emission (AE) signal parameters to isolate the failure mechanisms in a 0° unidirectional, fiberglass/epoxy tensile test specimen. Since several failure mechanisms were known to be present, the lack of any distinctly identifiable bands in the original amplitude distribution indicated that there was considerable overlap between the AE signals of the various failure mechanisms. In order to separate the amplitude bands associated with each mechanism, it was necessary to sort on the duration of the AE signal. Two additional plots, counts versus amplitude and hits versus counts, were used to verify that the amplitude distributions were comprised …

On Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 138, standard shipboard procedures were modified to allow for the real-time monitoring of several laboratory core-scanning systems that provide centimeter-scale measurements of saturated bulk density, magnetic susceptibility and digital color reflectance. These continuous, high-resolution data sets were used to ensure the proper offset of multiple holes and to splice together complete sedimentary sections. Typically, the spliced, continuousediment sections were found to be about 10% longer than the section drilled, as measured by the length of the drill string. While the source of this elongation is not yet fully understood, it must be compensated for …

For an industrial robot on a daily operation basis such as pick and place, it is desired to minimize the robotic joint displacements when moving the robot from one location to another. The objective of the optimization here is to simultaneously minimize a robot end effector's positional error and the robotic joint displacements. By modifying the searching algorithm in the existing complex optimization method, this article presents a technique for finding the desired global optimum solution more efficiently. Laminar/Turbulent Oscillating Flow In Circular Pipes, Kyung H. Ahn, Mounir B. Ibrahim

A two-dimensional oscillating flow analysis was conducted simulating the gas flow inside Stirling engine heat exchangers. Both laminar and turbulent oscillating pipe flow were investigated numerically for Re_max = 1,920 (Va = 80), 10,800 (Va = 272), 19,300 (Va = 272), and 60,800 (Va = 126). The results are here compared with experimental results of previous investigators. Predictions of the flow regime on present oscillating flow conditions are also checked by comparing velocity amplitudes and phase difference with those from laminar theory and quasi-steady profile. A high Reynolds number k-ε turbulence model was used for turbulent oscillating pipe flow. …
