Development Of Athletes Conceptions Of Sport Officials Authority, David W. Rainey, Nicholas R. Santilli, Kevin Fallon

Psychology

This study examined baseball players' conceptions of umpires' authority. Eighty male players, ages 6-22 years, completed an abbreviated Inventory of Piaget's Developmental Tasks (Furth, 1970), which was used to measure cognitive development. They then heard recorded scenarios describing conflicts with an umpire and a parent. Players indicated if they would argue with the authorities, why they obey the authorities (obedience), and why the authorities get to make decisions (legitimacy). Obedience and legitimacy responses were categorized into Damon's (1977) three levels. Measures of arguing, obedience, and legitimacy were analyzed for four age levels and three levels of cognitive development. Older and …

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

A preference-testing apparatus was designed to provide sows with continuous access to three farrowing crates of different widths. The crates radiated from a central hub area sufficiently large for sows to enter or leave any crate freely. In exp. 1, nine sows were offered crates of 450-, 600- and 750-mm width at standing height. In exp. 2, 12 sows were offered widths of 450, 750 and 1200 mm, the largest being of sufficient width for the sow to turn around. The Expression Pattern Of The Tonoplast Intrinsic Protein Γ-Tip In Arabidopsis Thaliana Is Correlated With Cell Enlargement, Edward Himelblau, Herman Hofte, Dolors Ludevid, Maarten J. Chrispeels

The vacuolar membrane (tonoplast) contains an abundant intrinsic protein with six membrane-spanning domains that is encoded by a small gene family. Different isoforms of tonoplast intrinsic protein (TIP) are expressed in different tissues or as a result of specific signals. Using promoter-β-glucuronidase (GUS) fusions and in situ hybridization, we have examined the expression of γ-TIP in Arabidopsis thaliana. GUS staining of plants transformed with promoter-GUS fusions showed that γ-TIP gene expression is high in recently formed tissues of young roots. Elucidation Of The Complete Azorhizobium Nicotinate Catabolism Pathway, Christopher Kitts, Jerome P. Lapointe, Van Thai Lam, Robert A. Ludwig

Biological Sciences

A complete pathway for Azorhizobium caulinodans nicotinate catabolism has been determined from mutant phenotype analyses, isolation of metabolic intermediates, and structural studies. Nicotinate serves as a respiratory electron donor to O₂ via a membrane-bound hydroxylase and a specific c-type cytochrome oxidase. The resulting oxidized product, 6-hydroxynicotinate, is next reduced to 1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-6-oxonicotinate. Hydrolytic ring breakage follows, with release of pyridine N as ammonium. Decarboxylation then releases the nicotinate C-7 carboxyl group as CO₂, and the remaining C skeleton is then oxidized to yield glutarate. Transthioesterification with succinyl coenzyme A (succinyl-CoA) yields glutaryl-CoA, which is then oxidatively decarboxylated to …

Successful crop production depends to a large degree on selecting the best varieties for a particular area. This publication contains variety recommendations, descriptions, and yield data for small grains. Important factors in variety selection include yield, yield stability, maturity, straw strength, height, test weight, quality, and disease resistance. Yield is an important factor; however, a variety with good disease resistance, straw strength, and high grain quality may be more profitable for the producer in some instances than the highest yielding variety. Disease resistance information is based on reactions to present and prevalent races of a disease. Disease resistance is not …

This report outlines a management plan for the Kimberley Prawn Fishery which operates in Western Australia coastal waters of the Indian Ocean and Timor Sea, off the Kimberley coastline lying east of Koolan Island, 1230 45' east longitude and west of Cape Londondery, 1260 58' east longitude. Kimberley Prawn Fishery access restrictions were first specified in Western Australian Fisheries Notice No. 170 published in Governement Gazette No. 2 of 4 January, 1985.
