Generations In Conflict, John W. Ellas

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Christians must recognize that there is a generation gulf. There exists not only an incredible difference in the values, perspectives on life, and needs of future church members as compared to present church members, but more important, even now, there is a vital difference that already exists between members of today's congregations. A failure to understand and deal with this present challenge is creating conflict and numerical decline in a multitude of churches. These issues are not limited to any region or religious tradition. Churches that understand the real issues and address them through effective ministry are experiencing significant growth.

The current design criteria for effective design width being used in the AISI Automotive Steel Design Manual 1 for the design of cold-formed steel members are based on tests under static loading condition. The primary objective of this investigation was to study the validity of these effective design width formulas for members subjected to dynamic loads. This report presents a detailed description of an experimental study. Selected steels with nominal yield strengths ranging from 25 ksi to 100 ksi were uniaxially tested under different strain rates. On August 24th, 1992, Hurricane Andrew devastated a large part of South Dade County in Florida. With over 35,000 homes to be rebuilt, there is interest in seeing if these reconstructed residences can be made more energy-efficient.

This report provides a comprehensive assessment of potential energy efficiency improvements for both new and existing homes in South Florida. Over forty energy-efficiency measures were considered in the analysis. Many homes in the effected zone experienced damage to their windows, roofs and the surrounding landscape. As a result, the analysis closely examined options associated with these design aspects. All major end-uses of electricity …

Small area variation analysis are often based on area-level data such as the total number of hospital admissions within an area, rather than person-level data. Such analysis often make the assumption that the number of admissions within a small area follow a Poisson distribution. This may not be a reasonable assumption when multiple admissions per person are possible. In this case, the multiple admission factor (MAF) can be used to adjust for the extra variance introduced by multiple admissions. Calcium ions play a critical role in neurotransmitter release. The cytosolic Ca 2+ concentration ([Ca2+]cyt) at nerve terminals must therefore be carefully controlled. Several different mechanisms, including a plasmalemmal Na/Ca exchanger, are involved in regulating [Ca2+]cyta We employed immunofluorescence microscopy with polyclonal antiserum raised against dog cardiac sarcolemmal Na/Ca exchanger to determine the distribution of the exchanger in vertebrate neuromuscular preparations. Our data indicate that the Na/Ca exchanger is concentrated at the neuromuscular junctions of the rat diaphragm. The exchanger is also present in the nonjunctional sarcolemma, but at a much lower concentration than in the junctional regions. Denervation markedly …

Developing Thinking Competencies And Self-Esteem Through Selected Literature And Higher-Level Questioning Strategies, Carolyn B. Cropper

Graduate Theses

This project developed curriculum focusing upon the importance of using literature and higher-level questioning strategies as a tool to increase a student's self-esteem. The major emphasis of the study was on developing higher-level questioning strategies to promote thinking on the part of the student in order to improve self-esteem. Common conflict situations threatening the improvement of self-esteem were selected. After reviewing the literature, a curriculum containing an annotated, categorized bibliography of relevant books accompanied with specific questioning strategies was compiled to aid the classroom teacher to develop higher-level questioning skills in children.
