Through a multiple case study design the influence of teachers' beliefs on literacy instruction for at-risk first graders was examined and described. A volunteer sample included five female teachers who taught in different high risk schools within the same school district. Five research questions guided the study: (1) What are teachers' beliefs about instructing young at-risk children to read and write? (2) What do teachers say they do as they instruct young at-risk children to read and write? (3) What do teachers actually do as they instruct young at-risk children to read and write? The Validity Of Perceived Physical Fitness In Adult Men And Women, Patricia Anne Mortati Mccollum

This study investigated the perception of personal physical fitness in adult men and women by comparing a Perceived Physical Fitness Index (PPFI) with a composite index of measured fitness. Subjects were 106 volunteer adults 36-55 years of age. They completed the PPFI (a 7-point Likert-type scale) and were then assessed for body composition, cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. A composite fitness score was compared with their PPFI score. Perceived fitness was significantly different than actual fitness (F (1,100) = 31.3, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.001) and there was a significant gender difference (F (1,100) = 13.56, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.001). However, a significant interaction (F (1,100) = 21.88, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.0001) indicated that the difference between perceived and actual fitness was not consistent for males and females. Further analysis revealed that females were able to estimate their fitness level more accurately than males. The results indicate that perceived fitness is a valid indicator of actual fitness for women but not for men.

This thesis discusses the current problems surrounding civic participation. Conventional political wisdom tells us that many people have become apathetic when it comes to getting involved in politics. However, I will argue that policy makers misconstrue their perception of the public because they are operating from paradigms which are not democratic. When policy makers operate from these faulty paradigms, the role of the public becomes subordinated and the public is effectively "locked out" of the political decision-making process. A Post Processing System For Global Correction Of Ocr Generated Errors, Bryan Edward Bullard

This thesis discusses the design and implementation of an OCR post processing system. The system is used to perform automatic spelling detection and correction on noisy, OCR generated text. Unlike previous post processing systems, this system works in conjunction with an inverted file database system. The initial results obtained from post processing 10,000 pages of OCR'ed text are encouraging. These results indicate that the use of global and local document information extracted from the inverted file system can be effectively used to correct OCR generated spelling errors.

Five general themes are prevalent in the literature of organizational culture: Meaning, structure, language, stability/instability, and reification. This thesis gives a broad general overview of the concept of culture as it relates to communication, analyzes the literature in terms of the above, and makes suggestions for its use to develop in students an understanding and appreciation of the concept of organizational culture. A prescriptive reading plan and a teaching plan are included to allow teachers to select topics that have importance either for themselves or their students.

This study employed three questionnaires to determine if depression, anxiety and mood levels in women recently diagnosed with breast cancer differed when the breast lump was discovered via breast self-exam versus discovery by physician examination, mammogram or accidental discovery by self or spouse. Depression was measured by the Beck Depression Inventory, anxiety was measured by the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Scale and mood was measured by the General Health Questionnaire. The Neuman Systems Model was the conceptual framework for this study. Sixty-two women between the ages of 26-80 years completed the three questionnaires while awaiting the physician during an office visit. …

The recent identification of a possible link between the long-term use of aspirin and a reduced incidence of colon and rectal cancer has directed renewed attention to a familiar household medication whose origins reach back to antiquity.

Competition from other painkillers had begun to cut deeply into the market once dominated by aspirin-based products when studies indicated the possibilities, first that the regular consumption of aspirin might prevent second heart attacks, and later that it might lower the risk of heart attacks in healthy individuals. The promise theory views the origin of contract in the making of a promise. This means that it views the creation of contracts as arising, in an important part, from the voluntary acts of promisors rather than from third parties like the State. In this regard, the theory facilitates the classical liberal value of freedom to contract. The attention and hand-wringing lavished on race relations by Aleinikoff and many others obscures the fact that by every measurement of formal equality, and by many measures of substantive equality, white women are further behind than black men (black women, unsurprisingly, are on the bottom). It leads us to focus our energies, our remedies, and our scarce resources on race discrimination, often at the direct expense of women. I hope to do three things in my brief remarks today. The purpose of this article is to comment on the term hindutva, viz. "Hinduness," with special reference to a 19th century Bengali thinker who sought to indigenise his Christian faith, and to draw some topical conclusions. The thinker is Brahmabandhab Upadhyay (1861-1907) whom his sometime friend, Rabindranath Tagore, Bengal's greatest luminary, described as "a Roman Catholic ascetic, yet a Vedantin -- spirited, fearless, self-denying, erudite and uncommonly influential." No doubt Upadhyay was influential then; he had a powerful impact on Tagore himself especially when they were jointly establishing what would later develop as Tagore's brainchild of Santiniketan. The primary objective of this study is to reconstruct the paleofloristics of an unnamed shale of lower Middle Pennsylvanian age. The shale is periodically exposed in the highwall of the Ashboro Pit, Log Cabin Coal Company, Clay County, Indiana. This will be the first upland fossil flora to be described from the eastern margin of the Eastern Interior Basin (Illinois Basin). The gray shale containing the upland flora lies directly above the Upper Block Coal (SW 1/4, SE 1/4, sec. 17, T. 11N., R. 6W.)

The Clerk of Oxenford in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales is often maligned for lacking development as a literary character. Frequently, the Clerk has been dismissed as a stereotype or an ideal rather than a multi-dimensional character. The Clerk's character, much like the meaning of his tale, is concealed from the reader and veiled behind expectations.

Chaucer manipulates readers by exploiting expectations associated with fourteenth century clerks. These expectations derive from historical and literary stereotypes which constitute the General Prologue portrait of the Clerk. All students, grades three through six, and teachers, grades one through six, were surveyed regarding their opinion of Windows on Science^®.
