This research offers an alternative method to the study of visual narrative. It criticizes Western society's videocentrism, or centering of television as the predominant medium of communicating to mass society. This method is known as videocentric criticism; Chapter one assesses the modern and postmodern condition. Philosophy from the Greek and modern Enlightenments suggests that Western society's videocentrism is a developing process originating in these periods. It then addresses modernity and postmodernity. Postmodern cultural phenomena that progressed in proximity with the evolution of television is discussed; Chapter two defines videocentric criticism. Narrative, structuralism, post-structuralism, and deconstruction are applied to televisual information. …

The four largest firms in the Nevada slot route industry control over 70 percent of the industry. Its structure was shown to be highly concentrated using the Herfindahl-Herschman index; The individual slot route operators appear to conduct themselves in a non-competitive manner by differentiating their respective products. Each firm in the industry established their own niche either through product or service differentiation; Firms in concentrated industries tend to earn monopoly profits. Yet, using Tobin's q and Jensen's coefficient, we show that Nevada's slot route firms did not earn excess profits, despite the high degree of industrial concentration; The presence of …

This study examined returns to scale for the production of health services in college and university student health centers. Estimation was done using the Cobb-Douglas production function. The results of this study present evidence that supports the hypothesis of decreasing returns to scale across the set of sampled observations of student health centers.

This study investigated the inner experience of five bulimic subjects, ages 18 to 56 years, using the descriptive experience sampling method (Hurlburt, 1990). Subjects were signaled at random intervals by a programmed beeping device, asked to "freeze" any inner events, such as thoughts, images, or feelings, at the moment of the beep, and to record this experience in a notebook. Subjects met with investigators within 24 hours to discuss each sampled moment in detail. Investigators then examined subjects' descriptions for emerging salient characteristics. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of prenatal breast-feeding education on a mother's perceived success at breast-feeding. This study also looked at the relationship of prenatal breast-feeding education on a mother's perception of her infant. The conceptual framework utilized was the Roy Adaptation Model. Motherhood and breast-feeding involve a change in role, which is why this theory served as a foundation for the study. The method for study was a quasi-experimental design. Hardiness, a personality characteristic that is purposed to mediate the stress response and reduce the likelihood of illness, was studied in the context of adaptation to chronic disease. A descriptive correlational design was used to determine whether a positive relationship exists between the presence of hardiness and psychosocial adaptation to hypertension. The sample consisted of 50 individuals 60 years old or older. Data was analyzed using the product moment correlation coefficient, Spearman's Rho, and multiple regression. A moderately weak correlation (r =.39, df = 48, p =.003) between hardiness and adaptation was found. Other significant relationships identified included those between …

The United States is facing a critical shortage of nurses. A prevailing societal perception of nursing having a subservient role in health care prevents many recruits from choosing this career, despite efforts by nursing leaders to change this perception (Styles, 1988). The purpose of this study was to determine the current perceptions of patients, nurses, and physicians regarding nursing as a profession.; A 20 item modified version of Valiga's View of Nursing Questionnaire was implemented for this study. The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge of Universal Precautions, the attitudes and beliefs regarding the risk of AIDS among emergency room and critical care nurses and physicians, and the needle recapping behavior that places them at risk for acquiring HIV infection. The Health Belief Model was the conceptual model.; The sample (n = 80) consisted of nurses (n = 68) and physicians (n = 12) who practice in the emergency room (n = 19) or a critical care unit (n = 61) in a community hospital. Recently, in Grundberg v. Upjohn Co.1 the Utah Supreme Court adopted a broad formulation of comment k to section 402A of the Restatement (Second) of Torts ("comment k").2 In so doing, the court placed Utah in the small group of jurisdictions providing immunity from strict liability design defect claims to all prescription drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration. By precluding a cause of action in strict liability for injuries arising from dangerously designed drugs, the Grundberg decision unduly restricts the scope of strict products liability claims. The American College of Emergency Physicians recently reported that as many as 100,000 to 200,000 geriatric patients are abandoned each year in emergency rooms across the country. At San Francisco General Hospital alone, three to four such patients are abandoned each week, often suffering from dementia or other ailments that impose serious burdens on their families. The basic concern of the drafters of the Utah Constitution, from the time Utah was settled up to the time the current constitution was drafted, was to secure the free exercise of religion. The concern was deliberate and essentially self-serving: the Mormons wanted to be free of federal authorities and the vigorous enforcement of federal anti-polygamy laws and to govern themselves according to their unique values. Establishment of religion, as currently understood, was never part of their program. The Validity Of Perceived Physical Fitness In Adult Men And Women, Patricia Anne Mortati Mccollum

This study investigated the perception of personal physical fitness in adult men and women by comparing a Perceived Physical Fitness Index (PPFI) with a composite index of measured fitness. Subjects were 106 volunteer adults 36-55 years of age. They completed the PPFI (a 7-point Likert-type scale) and were then assessed for body composition, cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. A composite fitness score was compared with their PPFI score. Perceived fitness was significantly different than actual fitness (F (1,100) = 31.3, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.001) and there was a significant gender difference (F (1,100) = 13.56, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.001). However, a significant interaction (F (1,100) = 21.88, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.0001) indicated that the difference between perceived and actual fitness was not consistent for males and females. Further analysis revealed that females were able to estimate their fitness level more accurately than males. The results indicate that perceived fitness is a valid indicator of actual fitness for women but not for men.

This thesis discusses the current problems surrounding civic participation. Conventional political wisdom tells us that many people have become apathetic when it comes to getting involved in politics. However, I will argue that policy makers misconstrue their perception of the public because they are operating from paradigms which are not democratic. When policy makers operate from these faulty paradigms, the role of the public becomes subordinated and the public is effectively "locked out" of the political decision-making process. This thesis discusses the design and implementation of an OCR post processing system. The system is used to perform automatic spelling detection and correction on noisy, OCR generated text. Unlike previous post processing systems, this system works in conjunction with an inverted file database system. The initial results obtained from post processing 10,000 pages of OCR'ed text are encouraging. These results indicate that the use of global and local document information extracted from the inverted file system can be effectively used to correct OCR generated spelling errors.

Five general themes are prevalent in the literature of organizational culture: Meaning, structure, language, stability/instability, and reification. This thesis gives a broad general overview of the concept of culture as it relates to communication, analyzes the literature in terms of the above, and makes suggestions for its use to develop in students an understanding and appreciation of the concept of organizational culture. A prescriptive reading plan and a teaching plan are included to allow teachers to select topics that have importance either for themselves or their students.

This study employed three questionnaires to determine if depression, anxiety and mood levels in women recently diagnosed with breast cancer differed when the breast lump was discovered via breast self-exam versus discovery by physician examination, mammogram or accidental discovery by self or spouse. Depression was measured by the Beck Depression Inventory, anxiety was measured by the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Scale and mood was measured by the General Health Questionnaire. The Neuman Systems Model was the conceptual framework for this study. Sixty-two women between the ages of 26-80 years completed the three questionnaires while awaiting the physician during an office visit. …
