Morphology Of The Synlophe And Genital Cone Of Parostertagia Heterospiculum (Trichostrongylidae) With Comments On The Subfamilial Placement Of The Genus, Eric P. Hoberg, J. Ralph Lichtenfels
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The genus Parostertagia is referred to the Cooperiinae with reference to a suite of shared characters of the synlophe and genital cone postulated as derived homologies for the subfamily. The genus has traditionally been relegated to the Graphidiinae or Ostertagiinae, but unique structural attributes of the synlophe and genital cone indicate close affinities with the Cooperiinae. The synlophe of Parostertagia heterospiculum is characterized by a relatively low number of ridges in the cervical zone (16-20 at the excretory pore), a frontal axis of orientation, sequential increase in ridges posteriorly, lateral addition of ridges, minuscule lateral-most ridges and hypertrophy of specific …

Judge And Jury Roles In Equivalents Analysis: Commentary On Malta V. Schulmerich Carillons, Mark D. Janis
Articles by Maurer Faculty
In Malta v. Schulmerich Carillons Inc. a divided panel of the Federal Circuit affirmed a JNOV granted on a jury verdict of infringement under the doctrine of equivalents. In so doing, the panel majority confirmed the applicability of guidelines from previous cases for determining the threshold level of evidence necessary to get the equivalents issue to the jury. This paper argues that despite powerful criticism from the dissent, the common sense guidelines articulated in theMalta majority opinion are not only necessary, but are appropriate. Indeed, the paper argues that the Malta guidelines are fundamental to the equivalents analysis, and …

Sensate Language And The Hermetic Tradition In Friedrich Christoph Oetinger's Biblisches Und Emblematisches Wörterbuch, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy
German Language and Literature Papers
The rise of rationalistic moral theology in the 18th century reflects the prevailing assumption of Enlightened thought that moral concepts were the privileged hermeneutical telos of the "coarse" or sensate language in the Bible and Christian dogma. The theological school known as neology supported this view and proposed an exegetical strategy for extracting the "pure" moral sense from the "coarse" or sensate text. In 1772 the Berlin neologian Wilhelm Abraham Teller (1734-1804) published a programmatic guide to this exegetical strategy, a dictionary entitled Wörterbuch des Neuen Testaments zur Erklärung der christlichen Lehre. I would like to discuss here a critical …

Who's In Charge Of U.S. Indian Policy?: Congress And The Supreme Court At Loggerheads Over American Indian Religious Freedom, David E. Wilkins
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
The federal government's three branches—executive, legislative, judicial, and that unwieldy mass known simply as "the bureaucracy" have, during the last half-decade—1987-1991—produced a dizzying crop of laws, policies, proclamations, regulations, and court decisions which have served simultaneously to 1) reaffirm tribal sovereignty; 2) permit and encourage greater state interference within Indian Country; 3) enhance federal legislative authority over tribes; and 4) deny constitutional free-exercise protections both to individual Indians and to tribes.
On the legislative side, Congress has established the experimental Tribal Self-Governance Demonstration Project which is a major step towards restoring the tribal right of self-determination, and is discussing the …
Managerial Communication Practices In Chinese Factories: A Preliminary Investigation, Kathleen J. Krone, Mary Garrett, Ling Chen
Managerial Communication Practices In Chinese Factories: A Preliminary Investigation, Kathleen J. Krone, Mary Garrett, Ling Chen
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
This paper presents the results of a preliminary study of selected managerial communication practices in Chinese factories. Members of a delegation of Chinese managers visiting the United States were interviewed to explore: (a) the extent to which Chinese factories conform to a bureaucratic model of organization, and (b) factory director communication within these organization. Of particular interest were their upward and downward communication practices, and their methods for persuading and motivating workers and managing conflicts with problem employees. The results of our investigation reveal a distinctive form of bureaucracy operating within these factories. Moreover, we describe patterns of managerial communication …
A Comparison Of Organizational, Structural, And Relationship Effects On Subordinates’ Upward Influence Choices, Kathleen J. Krone
A Comparison Of Organizational, Structural, And Relationship Effects On Subordinates’ Upward Influence Choices, Kathleen J. Krone
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
This research examined the extent to which organizational membership, centralization of authority, and subordinates’ perceptions of supervisory relationship quality affected how frequently they report using different types of tactics in their upward influence attempts. Participants from five different organizations were surveyed. A typology of upward influence tactics was created based on the extent to which: (1) the means employed to attempt influence are open or closed, and (2) the desired outcomes are openly expressed or left undisclosed. The resulting dependent variable consisted of three types of tactics: open upward influence, strategic upward influence, and political upward influence. MANOVA results indicated …
Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of Early Childhood Ability Measures Within A Model Of Personal Competence, Richard F. Ittenbach, Amy N. Spiegel, Kevin S. Mcgrew, Robert H. Bruininks
Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of Early Childhood Ability Measures Within A Model Of Personal Competence, Richard F. Ittenbach, Amy N. Spiegel, Kevin S. Mcgrew, Robert H. Bruininks
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
The present study tested Greenspan’s model of personal competence with data obtained from the Early Screening Profiles, a nationally standardized preschool screening battery designed to measure the general functioning level of children 2–7 years of age. Of the five models tested (three a priori and two a posteriori), three models produced results indicative of a good fit. These findings support the use of Greenspan’s model of personal competence as a framework for understanding the nature of developing abilities in young children as well as for the improvement of classification and diag-nosis of children with special needs.
Upper Cretaceous Nannofossils From Leg 120, Kerguelen Plateau, Southern Ocean, David K. Watkins
Upper Cretaceous Nannofossils From Leg 120, Kerguelen Plateau, Southern Ocean, David K. Watkins
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Drilling on the Kerguelen Plateau during Leg 120 cored the most complete, best preserved record of the Late Cretaceous of the Southern Ocean to date. Two calcareous pelagic sedimentary sections (Sites 747 and 750) provide a record from the upper Turonian(?)-lower Coniacian through the Maestrichtian. Two major disconformities interrupt the record: upper Coniacian-lower Santonian and mid-Campanian. Site 748 contains a Campanian-Maestrichtian record of neritic sedimentation dominated by nannofossil-bearing, intermittently silicified, glauconitic bioclastic grainstones to wackestones. Parts of the upper Maestrichtian and the mid-Campanian are absent at this site.
A set of 21 biostratigraphic events were used to correlate these sections. …

9. Composition And Origin Of Cr-Rich Glauconitic Sediments From The Southern Kerguelen Plateus (Site 748), Peter Rene Bitschene, Mary Anne Holmes, James Brezza
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Five hundred meters of a unique Upper Cretaceous Cr-rich glauconitic sequence (Unit III) that overlies a 3-m-thick alkali-basalt flow with underlying epiclastic volcanogenic sediments was drilled at ODP Leg 120 Site 748. The Cr-rich glauconitic sequence is lithostratigraphically and biostratigraphically divided into three subunits (IIIA, IIIB, IIIC) that can also be recognized by the Cr concentration of the bulk sediment, which is low (<200 ppm) in Subunits IIIC and IIIA and high (400-800 ppm) in Subunit IIIB. The Cr enrichment is caused by Cr-spinel, which is the only significant heavy mineral component beside Fe-Ti ores. Other Cr-bearing components are glauconite pellets and possibly some other clay minerals.
The glauconitic sequence of Subunit IIIB was formed by reworking of glauconite and volcanogenic components that were transported restricted distances and redeposited downslope by mass-transportation processes. The site of formation was a nearshore, shallow inner shelf …200>

Analysis Of The Backbone Dynamics Of The Ribonuclease H Domain Of The Human Immunodeficiency Virus Reverse Transcriptase Using 15N Relaxation Measurements, Robert Powers, G. Marius Clore, Stephen J. Stahl, Paul T. Wingfield, Angela Gronenborn
Robert Powers Publications
The backbone dynamics of the uniformly 15N-labeled ribonuclease H (RNase H) domain of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV- 1) reverse transcriptase have been investigated using two-dimensional inverse-detected heteronuclear 15N-lH NMR spectroscopy. 15N T1, T2, and nuclear Overhauser enhancement (NOE) data were obtained for 107 out of a total of 134 backbone amide groups. The overall rotational correlation time (TR) for the protein at 26˚ is 10.4 ns. The backbone N-H vectors for all the measurableresidues exhibit very fast motions on a time scale of <20 ps. The 15N relaxation data for …20>

1H, 15N, 13C, And 13Co Assignments Of Human Interleukin-4 Using Three-Dimensional Double- And Triple-Resonance Heteronuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Robert Powers, Daniel S. Garrett, Carl J. March, Eric A. Frieden, Angela M. Gronenborn, G. Marius Clore
Robert Powers Publications
The assignment of the 1H, 15N, 13CO, and 13C resonances of recombinant human interleukin-4 (IL-4), a protein of 133 residues and molecular mass of 15.4 kDa, is presented based on a series of 11 three-dimensional (3D) double- and triple resonance heteronuclear NMR experiments. These studies employ uniformly labeled 15N- and 15N/13C-labeled IL-4 with an isotope incorporation of >95% for the protein expressed in yeast. Five independent sequential connectivity pathways via one-, two-, and three-bond heteronuclear J couplings are exploited to obtain unambiguous sequential assignments. Specifically, CO(i)-N(i+l),NH(i+l) correlations are observed in the HNCO …
Learning Disabilities: Educational Considerations, Juana F. Domínguez
Learning Disabilities: Educational Considerations, Juana F. Domínguez
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on learning disabilities so a more appropriate approach to the education of children with learning disabilities can be utilized in Ecuador. The term learning disabilities may be applied to any learner who fails to benefit from the curriculum in which he/she has been placed. Moreover, this paper presents many of the important facts for understanding children with leaning disabilities and dealing with these children in school. However, the information found in this paper represents just a portion of the knowledge base about learning disabilities.
