Having Babies Or Not: Household Composition And Fertility In Rural Iowa And Nebraska, 1900,1910, Deborah Fink, Alicia Carriquiry Jan 1992

Having Babies Or Not: Household Composition And Fertility In Rural Iowa And Nebraska, 1900,1910, Deborah Fink, Alicia Carriquiry

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

How did life change for people from the eastern prairie or forest regions when they crossed the Missouri River to settle in the Plains of Nebraska? The land presented its own social, economic, and environmental problems for the settlers. While some historians have emphasized the resourcefulness with which settlers adapted to maintain the life ways of the rural regions to the east, others have pointed to the cultural and social shifts effected by the plains environment. Considerable social divergence occurred within the plains population, even within the dominant northern European American ethnicity. This study addresses the lives of rural women …

Review Of The Invented Indian: Cultural Fictions & Government Policies And Lost Harvests: Prairie Indian Reserve Farmers And Government Policy, Paul A. Olson Jan 1992

Review Of The Invented Indian: Cultural Fictions & Government Policies And Lost Harvests: Prairie Indian Reserve Farmers And Government Policy, Paul A. Olson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Both of these books concern the force of myth. James Clifton's The Invented Indian, a book put together by Clifton with sixteen other authors, represents an account of the collaboration between Native Americans and whitesanthropologists, poets, do-gooders, and government policymakers-to create a stereotypical "Indian" and an equally stereotypical history of Indians. The stereotypes are conveyed as "facts" in school texts, the media, and "scholarship," i.e., that perhaps hundreds of millions of Indians lived in America when Columbus came, that Pocahontas saved the Virginians and Squanto the Pilgrims, that the United States Constitution derives from the Iroquois, that Indians worshipped Mother …

Just Tell Us What You Want, Marilla Svinicki

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Mike Smith was assigned a history section of one of those writing across the curriculum courses, the kind where he was supposed to introduce students to the joy of writing as a learning experience. On top of that, it was a required state history course the contents of which most students had in high school. So he was pretty sure students would be coming into the course with bad attitudes right off the bat. But he loved his subject and knew how exciting it could be once you understood the mysteries and problem-solving aspects of history instead of just concentrating …

Stress-Strain Relation In Debris Flow Analysis, Chi-Hai Ling, Cheng-Lung Chen, Chyan-Deng Jan Jan 1992

Stress-Strain Relation In Debris Flow Analysis, Chi-Hai Ling, Cheng-Lung Chen, Chyan-Deng Jan

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

In debris flow analysis, the generalized viscop1astic fluid (GVF) model can be used as the constitutive equations. When the yield stress is negligible, the shear expression in the GVF model for simple shear flow reduces to r = µ1 (du/dz)n, where r is the shear stress, µ1 is the consistency index, du/dz is the shear rate, and n is the flow behavior index. In this paper the r versus du/dz relation is studied by running experiments with 14 mm dry glass spheres in a conveyor-belt flume. A comparison of the estimated r with the measured du/dz …

Jewish Lawyering In A Multicultural Society: A Midrash On Levinson Colloquy, Russell G. Pearce Jan 1992

Jewish Lawyering In A Multicultural Society: A Midrash On Levinson Colloquy, Russell G. Pearce

Faculty Scholarship

When we acknowledge the contradiction between the project's goal and the reality of group influence, we are led to consider the alternative strategy of creating community. Such a strategy would invite lawyers to begin a community dialogue regarding how each of our group identities, and the responses of others to our identities, interfere with our efforts to realize the goal of equal justice. While significant to the understanding of group dynamics, consideration of Jewish lawyering probably has limited value as a predictor of an individual lawyer's professional conduct. The actual and potential influence of Jewishness on lawyering is quite diverse, …

The Political Balance Of The Religion Clauses, Abner S. Greene Jan 1992

The Political Balance Of The Religion Clauses, Abner S. Greene

Faculty Scholarship

When the Supreme Court held in Employment Division v. Smith that the Free Exercise Clause does not protect religious practices from otherwise valid laws that incidentally burden those practices, it followed a particular theory of democratic politics. That some laws might unintentionally burden certain religious practices is, said the Court, an "unavoidable consequence of democratic government [that] must be preferred to a system in which each conscience is a law unto itself." The Court was certainly right in one sense: To claim that conscientious objection to an otherwise valid law should exempt one from that law is to claim that …

Stable Isotope Study Of Water-Rock Interaction And Ore Formation, Bayhorse Base And Precious Metal District, Idaho, Robert R. Seal Ii, Robert O. Rye Jan 1992

Stable Isotope Study Of Water-Rock Interaction And Ore Formation, Bayhorse Base And Precious Metal District, Idaho, Robert R. Seal Ii, Robert O. Rye

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The Bayhorse base and precious metal district situated east of the Idaho batholiths in south-central Idaho. The ores occur near the Nevada Mountain granitic stock as veins cutting the lower Paleozoic Ramshorn Slate and the Garden Creek Phyllite, and as fillings around breccias fragments within the Bayhorse Dolomite. The veins are dominated by siderite and tetrahedrite, with lesser quartz and galena, whereas the breccias ores dominantly comprise only quartz and galena. Mineralization and intrusive activity were contemporaneous during Cretaceous time. Fluid inclusion and stable isotope data indicate that mineralization formed from hot (ca. 375° -225°C), CO2-rich (≤8.3 ± …

Introduction To Special Section On The Cajon Pass Scientific Drilling Project, Mark D. Zoback, Arthur H. Lachenbruch

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Over the past few decades a generally accepted conceptual model for the thermomechanics of the San Andreas fault was based on three factors believed to have been supported by observation: (1) maximum horizontal shear stress increases with depth in the crust at the rate of 7-8 MPa/km (as indicated by measurements in relatively shallow boreholes), roughly the same rate of shear stress increase as in other regions [e.g., McGarr et al., 1982], (2) the maximum horizontal stress direction in the vicinity of the fault was oriented at about 300-45 ° to its strike (as indicated by the predominance of right-lateral …

A Brief Literature Review Of Open-Channel Current Meter Testing, Kirk G. Thibodeaux Jan 1992

A Brief Literature Review Of Open-Channel Current Meter Testing, Kirk G. Thibodeaux

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has undertaken the task of conducting an evaluation of the USGS's standard water-flow current meter, the Price type-AA current meter. The first part of the USGS's task was to conduct a comprehensive literature review to determine the extent and types of testing that has been conducted to evaluate the performance of various types of current meters used for open-channel flow measurements. The meter types included in the review were the vertical-axis mechanical type, the horizontal-axis mechanical type, the electromagnetic type, and the point-velocity acoustic (ultrasonic) type current meters. The review revealed that current meters have …

Morphology Of The Synlophe And Genital Cone Of Parostertagia Heterospiculum (Trichostrongylidae) With Comments On The Subfamilial Placement Of The Genus, Eric P. Hoberg, J. Ralph Lichtenfels Jan 1992

Morphology Of The Synlophe And Genital Cone Of Parostertagia Heterospiculum (Trichostrongylidae) With Comments On The Subfamilial Placement Of The Genus, Eric P. Hoberg, J. Ralph Lichtenfels

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The genus Parostertagia is referred to the Cooperiinae with reference to a suite of shared characters of the synlophe and genital cone postulated as derived homologies for the subfamily. The genus has traditionally been relegated to the Graphidiinae or Ostertagiinae, but unique structural attributes of the synlophe and genital cone indicate close affinities with the Cooperiinae. The synlophe of Parostertagia heterospiculum is characterized by a relatively low number of ridges in the cervical zone (16-20 at the excretory pore), a frontal axis of orientation, sequential increase in ridges posteriorly, lateral addition of ridges, minuscule lateral-most ridges and hypertrophy of specific …

Judge And Jury Roles In Equivalents Analysis: Commentary On Malta V. Schulmerich Carillons, Mark D. Janis Jan 1992

Judge And Jury Roles In Equivalents Analysis: Commentary On Malta V. Schulmerich Carillons, Mark D. Janis

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In Malta v. Schulmerich Carillons Inc. a divided panel of the Federal Circuit affirmed a JNOV granted on a jury verdict of infringement under the doctrine of equivalents. In so doing, the panel majority confirmed the applicability of guidelines from previous cases for determining the threshold level of evidence necessary to get the equivalents issue to the jury. This paper argues that despite powerful criticism from the dissent, the common sense guidelines articulated in theMalta majority opinion are not only necessary, but are appropriate. Indeed, the paper argues that the Malta guidelines are fundamental to the equivalents analysis, and …

Sensate Language And The Hermetic Tradition In Friedrich Christoph Oetinger's Biblisches Und Emblematisches Wörterbuch, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Jan 1992

Sensate Language And The Hermetic Tradition In Friedrich Christoph Oetinger's Biblisches Und Emblematisches Wörterbuch, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

The rise of rationalistic moral theology in the 18th century reflects the prevailing assumption of Enlightened thought that moral concepts were the privileged hermeneutical telos of the "coarse" or sensate language in the Bible and Christian dogma. The theological school known as neology supported this view and proposed an exegetical strategy for extracting the "pure" moral sense from the "coarse" or sensate text. In 1772 the Berlin neologian Wilhelm Abraham Teller (1734-1804) published a programmatic guide to this exegetical strategy, a dictionary entitled Wörterbuch des Neuen Testaments zur Erklärung der christlichen Lehre. I would like to discuss here a critical …

Who's In Charge Of U.S. Indian Policy?: Congress And The Supreme Court At Loggerheads Over American Indian Religious Freedom, David E. Wilkins Jan 1992

Who's In Charge Of U.S. Indian Policy?: Congress And The Supreme Court At Loggerheads Over American Indian Religious Freedom, David E. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

The federal government's three branches—executive, legislative, judicial, and that unwieldy mass known simply as "the bureaucracy" have, during the last half-decade—1987-1991—produced a dizzying crop of laws, policies, proclamations, regulations, and court decisions which have served simultaneously to 1) reaffirm tribal sovereignty; 2) permit and encourage greater state interference within Indian Country; 3) enhance federal legislative authority over tribes; and 4) deny constitutional free-exercise protections both to individual Indians and to tribes.

On the legislative side, Congress has established the experimental Tribal Self-Governance Demonstration Project which is a major step towards restoring the tribal right of self-determination, and is discussing the …
