All Computer Science and Engineering Research
This note reports on an effort to implement a version of Poole's rule for specificity. Relatively, efficient implementation relies on correcting and improving a pruning lemma of Simari-Loui [92]. This in turn requires revision of Poole's specificity concept. The resulting system is a usable knowledge representation system with first-order-language and defeasible reasoning. Sample input and output are included in an appendix. It is a good candidate for multiple inheritance applications; it is useful for planning, but limited by the underlying search for plans.

Knocking Out Motor Vehicle Insurance Household Exclusions: Does The Financial Responsibility Law Cover All Bases, David A. Dick
Knocking Out Motor Vehicle Insurance Household Exclusions: Does The Financial Responsibility Law Cover All Bases, David A. Dick
Missouri Law Review
This Note discusses the issues presented by the conflicts between Missouri's Motor Vehicle Financial Responsibility Law, a legislative act intended to provide compensation for persons injured in vehicular accidents, and contractual exclusion clauses contained in motor vehicle liability insurance policies. A "household" or "family" exclusion clause, the type of liability insurance contract exclusion at issue in Halpin, typically states that no coverage exists for any obligation an insured may have to a member of the insured's family who is residing in the same household as the insured.' The household exclusion is designed to eliminate coverage when one family member's negligence …

At The Boundaries Of Law And Equity: The Court Of Appeals For The Federal Circuit And The Doctrine Of Equivalents, Paul C. Craane
At The Boundaries Of Law And Equity: The Court Of Appeals For The Federal Circuit And The Doctrine Of Equivalents, Paul C. Craane
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This comment examines the doctrine of equivalents, focusing on the tensions created by the continued attempts of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit to bring certainty and structure to this equity-based doctrine. As the comment unfortunately concludes, these attempts to introduce certainty and structure have increased the confusion as to many different aspects of patent litigation and practice. The author suggests that a more viable solution to the problem would be to restrict the scope of the doctrine rather than add additional analytical restrictions to the doctrine of equivalents.
Performance Of Edge Operators Under Varying Imaging Conditions, Ching-Wei Chang
Performance Of Edge Operators Under Varying Imaging Conditions, Ching-Wei Chang
Theses
A method has been devised for performing edge operations with various edge operators under varying imaging conditions and for quantitatively comparing the results of each edge operator. Both computer-simulated targets and real targets are employed, and experiments in both cases showed that the Sobel operator and Kirsch Compass Gradient Mask are better than the Highpass and Laplacian filters in the performance of edge operation.

Florida V. Bostick: Abandonment Of Reason In Fourth Amendment Reasonable Person Analysis, James F. Heuerman
Florida V. Bostick: Abandonment Of Reason In Fourth Amendment Reasonable Person Analysis, James F. Heuerman
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This note examines the United States Supreme Court's decision which addressed the constitutionality of "bus sweeps" -- random suspicionless police questioning of interstate bus travelers. The Court concluded that a reasonable bus passenger could feel free to disregard police questioning, and accordingly found that not all such encounters are entitled to Fourth Amendment scrutiny. The author explores the Court's decision and contends that only by severely underestimating the inherent coercion in such encounters was the Court able to avoid the intuitive conclusion that passengers are "seized" during such questioning.

A Failed Critique Of State Constitutionalism, David Schuman
A Failed Critique Of State Constitutionalism, David Schuman
Michigan Law Review
James A. Gardner begins The Failed Discourse of State Constitutionalism with a story describing "the experience of a great many lawyers in this country." The protagonist is an attorney whose client has an unlawful discrimination claim that for some reason cannot succeed under the U.S. Supreme Court's current equal protection jurisprudence. The attorney decides to present an argument based on her state constitution's equality guarantee, only to discover that the universe of material from which a plausible argument, not to mention a rich discourse, might emerge - existing case law and scholarship, "useful tidbits" of constitutional history and philosophy from …
The Outer Fringes Of Chapter 11: Nonconsenting Senior Lenders' Rights Under Subordination Agreements In Bankruptcy, David Kravitz
The Outer Fringes Of Chapter 11: Nonconsenting Senior Lenders' Rights Under Subordination Agreements In Bankruptcy, David Kravitz
Michigan Law Review
This Note focuses on the options a senior creditor in Frugal's position may have when a reorganization plan provides for payments in violation of a subordination agreement that the creditor wishes to enforce. Part I explains the different types of subordination agreements and discusses their treatment under pre-Code bankruptcy law and under the Bankruptcy Code. Because of the dearth of case law regarding nonconsenting senior lenders and subordination agreements, Part II considers a question in a related area of bankruptcy law where more authority exists: whether a reorganization plan may release a nonbankrupt guarantor from its obligations under the guaranty …

S-DEMON (Version 2.0) is a computer program that simulates electron transport through Silicon DEvices by the MONte Carlo technique. The program will print and plot histograms of the carrier distribution function at different positions as well as other quantities of interest such as the average velocity, carrier density, and energy. For a more thorough discussion of the theoretical basis and the implementatioin of S-DEMON, the user is directed to the references [I-71. Material parameters taken from reference 171. This text begins with general notes on installing and running S-DEMON. Next, a description of the input deck format is given, followed …

Simulating Winter Wheat Spike Development And Growth, Gregory S. Mcmaster, Jack A. Morgan, Wallace Wilhelm
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Mechanistic crop simulation models can aid in integrating and directing research, and in improving farm management strategies. Information derived from recent research on spike development and growth of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was incorporated into a submodel, SPIKEGRO, and added to an existing model called SHOOTGRO. This manuscript discusses the SPIKEGRO submodel. SPIKEGRO emphasizes the reproductive functioning of the shoot apex. The complete developmental sequence of the shoot apex is outlined and quantified. All developmental events and growth stages are predicted, most using the phyllochron approach. Spikelet and floret primordium initiation, growth, and abortion; ovule fertilization and growth; …

Employer Training Needs In Hawaii: Summary Report, Stephen A. Woodbury, University Of Hawaii At Manoa, Industrial Relations Center
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
The Survey of Employer Training Needs in Hawaii was undertaken to gather information and data on the needs and preferences of employers in Hawaii regarding government assistance with training. The need for such information was created by passage of Act 68, Session Laws of Hawaii 1991, which created the Hawaii Employment and Training Fund "to assist employers and workers through innovative programs to include, but not be limited to, business-specific training, upgrade training, new occupational skills, management skills, and support services to improve the long-term employability of Hawaii's people."

The Voidability Of Actions Taken In Violation Of The Automatic Stay: Application Of The Information-Forcing Paradigm, Robert R. Niccolini
The Voidability Of Actions Taken In Violation Of The Automatic Stay: Application Of The Information-Forcing Paradigm, Robert R. Niccolini
Vanderbilt Law Review
The automatic stay' is undeniably one of the most important elements of the bankruptcy process. In fact, the expansion of the stay was one of the major changes that the 1978 Bankruptcy Reform Act initiated. Despite the integral nature of the automatic stay, however, courts have yet to reach a consensus regarding the conceptualization and subsequent effect of actions taken in violation of the stay. Presently, a substantial majority of the circuits hold that such actions are void "ab initio" and of no legal effect. A small but significant number of courts, however, decline to follow the majority rule. These …
